PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

This FIN explains why the Netra X1 and Netra T1 AC200/DC200 server
has been shipped with the diag switch within the OBP set to true. It
would normally be set to false at the time of shipment. The bugId
associated with this is 4414628. The issue has been changed for the
next release of OBP V4.0.9 and the next hard disk image currently
released to Operations for next product build.

The impact of the diag switch being set to true will only affect the
boot time to unix of the system on initial power up. Normally the boot
time of a Netra X1 would be around 1.5 mins with diag switch set to
false. With diag switch set to true, it would run at around 3 minutes.

If the diag switch was set to the normal setting of false a "Data
Exception Error" was observed booting at the PROM level. This occurred
on 1 in 10 units. going through power on. It is not seen with diag
switch set to true.

here are two problem symptoms in this area:

  1. The retained memory is controlled by a structure which is at a fixed
address relative to the top of the top memory bank. CORE thinks that
this address is (top - 2M - 8K), but OBP puts the structure at (top -
     16M - 8K) (this was changed from (top - 4M - 8K) not long ago). So
the memory containing the retained structure never gets cleared or
     ECC scrubbed by CORE.

  2. the routine 'init-retained' relies on knowing whether the last reset
was a soft reset or a hard/power-on reset. If it was a soft reset,
it looks for a valid retained structure, and if it finds one, it claims
all of the physical memory therein described: it expects this memory
to be ECC scrubbed (not cleared - that would destroy the point of the
feature). If there was a hard reset, then it clears and initializes
the 8K structure (with protection against ECC errors).

NOTE: Symptom 1 applies to both the Netra T1 AC200/DC200 and Netra X1 servers.
While symptom 2 applies to only Netra X1 servers.

However, the routine which decides whether there was a soft reset or a
hard reset/power-on always returns that there was a soft reset. This
is because CORE/cPOST do not set the OBP post-ret# values to anything
sensible (they get random values).

The outcome is that init-retained can assume memory is ECC scrubbed
when it isn't, and this causes the hangs/errors.

The corrective actions are INTERNAL. These are actions the FW
programmer has taken to restore the diag switch setting in OBP to its
default shipping value of "false" in the respective product OBP's

	For X1 OBP V 4.0.9
	For T1 OBP V 4.0.4

IMPLEMENTATION:

         ---
        | | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
         ---

         ---
        | | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
         ---

         ---
        | X | REACTIVE (As Required)
         ---

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

An Authorized Enterprise Field Service Representative may avoid the
above mentioned problems by following the recommendations as shown
below.

"None required, leave diag switch set to "true" for X1 OBP V 4.0.6
or
less. For T1 V 4.0.3 or less. Diag switch set to normal default "false"
in future OBP releases.

For Netra X1 OBP V 4.0.9 and higher
For Netra T1 OBP V 4.0.4 and higher
