PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

During power-up on specific Ultra 60 systems, the fans do not operate
which may result in the system overheating and shutting down.
These Ultra 60 systems may get thermal check error notification after
they have been powered on for approximately 5 minutes. This is a result
of the front and rear fans not operating.

Some shipments of Ultra 60s will get thermal checks (error notification)
on the desktop console windows after they have been powered on for
approximately 5 minutes. This is a result of the front and rear fans
not operating. Subsequently the system will shut down.

Approximately 170 Ultra 60 systems shipped in June and July 2000 were
recently identified with miswiring of the fan power supply. During
custom integration CTO (Configured -To-Order) in Sun Manufacturing at
Newark, California, the wiring harness included in the No Noise Kit
(p/n 530-2867-01) was not plugged into any power, and the P3 power
connector from the system power supply was incorrectly plugged into the
CDROM.

This No Noise Kit Assembly is used to reduce the overall acoustic noise
level of the system. The Kit is intended to be installed by Sun
customers or field service personnel as a retrofit. It can also be
integrated in the factory on customer configured orders. This product
enhancement consists of a circuit which incorporates a thermal sensor
to monitor temperature within the Ultra 60 system. Based on that
temperature it controls voltage to two of the system fans. When a low
temperature is sensed and the voltage to the fans is decreased such
that the fans operate at a lower speed. This reduces acoustic noise
associated with the fans.

Root cause was identified as an operator assembly error. Serial
numbers impacted were easily identifiable in Sun Manufacturing
database.

Corrective action was taken in CTO to train all operators on proper
wiring for integration of the No Noise Kit Assembly for Ultra 60
workstations.

IMPLEMENTATION:

         ---
        | | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
         ---

         ---
        | X | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
         ---

         ---
        | | REACTIVE (As Required)
         ---

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Enterprise Services Field Representatives and Enterprise Customers that
may be at risk of encountering the above mentioned problem;

If a system is known or suspected to be one of the miswired systems,
follow the procedure below. Reference the URL
http://sdpsweb.ebay/FIN_FCO/FIN/FINI0608-1_dir/Customer_Data to observe
the serial numbers and customer names of Ultra 60 systems that
manufacturing has determined to be affected. Also any customer system
which shuts down within several minutes of power-up or in which the
fans appear to be not turning on, should be checked for miswired power
connections.

Rework Instructions:

1. Remove top cover from Ultra 60 system.
2. Disconnect P3 (4-pin female) from CD ROM.
3. Plug P3 into the available 4-pin male connector on P/N 530-2867
    (No Noise Kit wiring harness).
NOTE: The three chassis power connectors are not labeled.
4. Plug the 4-pin female connector from harness P/N 530-2867 into
    the CD ROM.
5. Replace Ultra 60 top cover.

Implementation Footnote:

i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Enterprise Services will attempt to
contact all affected customers to recommend implementation of
     the FIN.

ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.

iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services will implement the FIN as the
     need arises.
