Activating Content Distribution Network Devices

Activating Content Distribution Network Devices

This chapter explains the steps that must be taken to activate your CDN devices and configure them to communicate with each other over your LAN. The instructions that follow assume that this is an initial installation of the CDN and not an upgrade. For information on upgrading your CDN devices, refer to the Release Notes for Cisco CDN Software Enterprise Solution.

This chapter contains the following sections:

Overview

Although Cisco CDN devices are delivered to you with the CDN software already installed, you must complete the following steps before you can begin working with the CDN:

    1. Determine whether your network uses a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server or a proxy server

    2. Identify device IDs and MAC addresses

    3. Identify network addresses and accounts

    4. Register devices with Cisco Technical Support

    5. Activate the CDM

    6. Activate Content Engines

The steps necessary to activate your Content Distribution Manager (CDM) and Content Engines (CEs) are described in the sections that follow.

Note   Before continuing with this chapter, make sure you have the Installation Wizard CD-ROM that shipped with your CDN hardware. This CD-ROM contains an important configuration and troubleshooting tool that you may need during the installation and configuration process.

Confirm Use of DHCP or Proxy Server

Determine whether your network uses a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server or a proxy server by asking your network administrator.

Identify Device IDs and MAC Addresses

During installation you will need to know the machine address (also referred to as the MAC address or device ID) of your CDM and all CEs. You can find the device IDs or MAC addresses on labels affixed to the devices.

Identify Network Addresses and Accounts

In addition to the device IDs and MAC addresses of your CDN devices, you need to have additional configuration information available in order to complete configuration of the CDM. Table 2-1 lists these configuration settings.

Note   DNS Server and all Proxy entries are optional.

Table 2-1: Device Configuration Properties
Device Setting Description

IP Address

Internet Protocol address—unique numeric address assigned to the computer. Please indicate if you are using DHCP and, if so, the permanent lease or static IP address assigned to the CDM.

Subnet Mask

The IP address for the subnet on which the device is located.

DNS Server

Domain Name Server—the IP address of one or more servers that are searched to resolve the name of the computer.

Gateway Address

IP address of a gateway device (or router) on the network.

Proxy:Port

The IP address and port number of the proxy server used to access the Internet using secure HTTP protocol.

Secure Proxy:Port

IP address and port number of the secure proxy server used to access the Internet using secure HTTP protocol.

Proxy Exceptions

The IP addresses for which the proxy server is not being used.

Register Devices with Cisco Technical Support

Once you have gathered the network information needed to activate your CDN devices, you must register your devices with Cisco CDN Enterprise Registration by calling 781-663-8200 or emailing your information to registerenterpriseCDN@cisco.com. Registration provides your devices with the settings and boot information necessary to begin communicating with each other.

Refer to Table 2-1 for descriptions of the settings you must provide.

Activate the CDM

Using a web-based graphical interface, the CDM manages channel and user creation, media import, and media distribution to CEs on the network. In turn, each CE may replicate media to other CEs on the network.

To begin managing and using the features of your CDN technology, you must first activate the CDM. Depending on the network configuration, use one of the following connection procedures.

Activating the CDM with a DHCP Server

If you are using a DHCP server to connect to the network, you first need to establish a permanent DHCP lease or static IP address for your CDM.

Refer to the documentation that came with your DHCP server for instructions on establishing permanent leases or static IP addresses for devices using your DHCP server interface, then reserve an address for your CDM before proceeding with the instructions below.

Note   Your CDM should be turned off prior to activation.

To activate the CDM with a DHCP server:

Step 1   Use the interface for the DHCP server to verify that a permanent DHCP lease or static IP address has been assigned to the device ID (also called MAC address) for the CDM. Cisco requires a static IP address or a permanent DHCP lease for the CDM.

Step 2   Create the DNS host name for the CDM.

Step 3   Power-on the CDM by pressing the power on/off switch to the on position.

Refer to the Cisco Content Engine 500 Series Hardware Installation Guide or the Cisco Content Networking Hardware Installation Guide for the Seven-Rack Unit Chassis for information on powering your CDM hardware on and off.

Note   The Content Distribution Manager may take a few minutes to complete the power-on tests.

Step 4   From a designated workstation, launch your web browser and point it to the address of your CDM.

Step 5   When you are prompted to log on, enter the default administrator user name and password as follows, then click OK:

User name: admin
Password: password

Step 6   Proceed to the "Activate Content Engines" section to complete the process of activating your CDN.

Activating the CDM without a DHCP Server

If your network does not use a DHCP server, you can complete setup of the CDM using the Installation Wizard configuration tool contained on the Installation Wizard CD-ROM that shipped with your CDN hardware.

Note   You must have a PC workstation running on the same subnet as the CDM in order for the Installation Wizard to communicate with it.

To launch the Installation Wizard tool and use it to configure your CDM:

Step 1   Press the power on/off switch to the on position. Refer to the Cisco Content Engine 500 Series Hardware Installation Guide or the Cisco Content Networking Hardware Installation Guide for the Seven-Rack Unit Chassis for information on powering your CDM hardware on and off.

Note   The CDM may take a few minutes to complete the power-on tests.

Step 2   Once the CDM has finished powering on, insert the Installation Wizard CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of a PC workstation on the same subnet as the CDM you are activating.

If the Installation Wizard does not start up automatically, navigate to the CD-ROM drive on your PC and double-click the Wizard.exe file to launch the Installation Wizard. The Cisco CDN Installation Wizard message box appears.

Step 3   Click Advanced.

The Cisco CDN Installation Wizard window appears. Once your CDN is activated, the Installation Wizard lists all CDMs and CEs connected to your subnet by their MAC address, and provides the current status of each. (See Figure 3-1 in "Using the Installation Wizard.") Because this is an initial installation, only your CDM should be listed.

Step 4   Double-click the record for the CDM. The Edit Device Settings dialog box appears. You can verify the device type by checking the Type field in the lower right corner of the dialog. The type should be "CDM."

Note   You can find the CDN device ID on a label affixed to the device.

Step 5   Configure the settings as appropriate for your network, as instructed by your network administrator.

CDN device settings are described in Table 2-1.

Step 6   Click Save.

A dialog box appears, notifying you that:
Network Information has been sent to the device.

Step 7   Click OK to confirm this message, and then click Close.

Step 8   Take note of the Online State column.

Note   It usually takes around five minutes and may take up to twenty minutes for the Online State to change.

Step 9   Once the CDM registers as (Online) in the Installation Wizard, launch your preferred Internet browser and enter the CDM's IP address or DNS name into the address field.

Step 10   When prompted, log in to the CDM using your administrative user name and password.

Step 11   Proceed to the "Activate Content Engines" section to complete the process of activating your CDN.

Activate Content Engines

CEs are configured using the Device Editor features of the CDM. Once configuration information is entered and saved on the CDM, the information is stored in the CDN registry from which it is retrieved and used by CE devices on your LAN with the help of the Installation Wizard utility.

Once CEs have received their configuration information, they are ready to communicate with the CDM and begin receiving media files.

To activate CEs using the Installation Wizard:

Step 1   Use the Device Editor on your CDM to configure each CE on your network. Your CE hardware should be turned off during configuration.

Refer to Chapter 2, "Configuring Content Distribution Network Devices," in the Cisco CDN Software Enterprise Solution User Guide for detailed instructions on configuring your CEs using the CDM user interface.

Step 2   Power on your CEs.

Verify that the power on/off LED indicator is on for each CE you will be configuring. Refer to the Cisco Content Engine 500 Series Hardware Installation Guide for information on locating the power switch and turning your CEs on and off safely.

Step 3   Insert the Installation Wizard CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of a PC workstation on the same subnet as the CEs you are activating.

If the Installation Wizard does not start up automatically, navigate to the CD-ROM drive on your PC and double-click the Wizard.exe file to launch the Installation Wizard.

Step 4   When you see the Cisco CDN Installation Wizard message box, click Advanced.

The Cisco CDN Installation Wizard window appears, listing the CDM and all CEs configured on your subnet by their device ID, and providing the current status of each.

Step 5   On the Installation Wizard interface, identify the CEs you need to activate by their device ID. You should see that the CEs display a status of (Online) or **Needs Attention** in the column labeled Online State.

Note   You can find the CDN device ID printed on a label affixed to the device.

For each CE with a status of **Needs Attention**, you need to use the Installation Wizard to bring the device online.

Step 6   Click the Configure menu and select Auto Configure. The Register Device dialog box appears asking you to Register or Skip each device that is not properly registered. Devices are identified by their device ID.

Step 7   Advance to the device(s) you need to register by clicking the Register or Skip buttons to advance through the list of offline devices.

Step 8   Click Register for each device that needs attention.

Note   It usually takes around five minutes and may take up to twenty minutes for the Online State to change.

Step 9   Take note of the Online State column.
