Hardware Required

Installing the Chassis

Installing the Exhaust Plenum

Installing Front Cards

Installing Back Cards

Tools Required

Make sure that you have the following standard tools before beginning the installation:

Hardware Required

The Cisco MGX 8260 chassis mounts in a standard 19- or 23-inch equipment rack. Before starting the installation procedure, check that you have the necessary hardware components. The solution this procedure describes uses the components shown in Table 2-1.

Hardware Component Spacing

The spacing between hardware components is important for the following reasons.

Install the plenum over the uppermost Cisco MGX 8260 chassis in the rack.

Installing the Chassis

To install the chassis, follow these steps:

Step 1 Attach the mounting brackets to the chassis using the 16 screws provided. Position the long side of the bracket against the chassis for a 19-inch rack, or the short side against the chassis for a 23-inch rack. With either position, you can mount the bracket flush with the front of the unit, or recessed by
5 or 8 inches (see Figure 2-1).

Note The chassis is typically empty. Do not insert or remove cards at this time.

Step 2 Using the mounting brackets and twelve screws, mount the chassis in the equipment rack (see Figure 2-2).

Figure 2-2: Mounting the Chassis

Step 3 At the rear of the chassis, connect a protective ground wire to the chassis ground terminals near the A or B supply (see Figure 2-3). Use a #10 RING LUG for 16-14 AWG wire. Where practical, use a ground lug that spans a pair of ground terminals.

Step 4 Using a socket wrench, tighten the ground terminal nuts.

Installing the Exhaust Plenum

The exhaust plenum is a Cisco MGX 8260 accessory that assures proper airflow through the chassis when other equipment is mounted above it. Although the plenum primarily controls airflow, it also protects the internal components from falling objects or other physical damage. You install the exhaust plenum over the top-most Cisco MGX 8260 in a one or two-chassis configuration; you do not need the plenum for a rack with three Cisco MGX 8260s.

To install the exhaust plenum, follow these steps:

Step 1 Attach the mounting brackets to the plenum (see Figure 2-4).

Step 2 Place the plenum over the top Cisco MGX 8260 chassis in the rack (see Figure 2-5).

Step 3 Secure the plenum to the rack using the screws provided.

Installing Front Cards

The Cisco MGX 8260 chassis holds front and back cards. Start installing cards from the front.

Warning Observe standard electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions before handling, inserting, or removing cards.

To install front cards, follow these steps:

Step 1 Put on an antistatic wriststrap and connect it to the front of the chassis.

Step 2 From the front of the chassis, install an SCC card in slot 9 (see Figure 2-6). Holding the card with the extraction levers straight out, slide the card into the slot and seat it firmly in the backplane.

Warning Handle the card gently. Bending or forcing the card can cause permanent damage.

Step 3 Secure the card at the top and bottom with the captive mounting screws.

Step 4 Install and secure BSC cards in slots 11, 13, 15, and 16.

Installing Back Cards

To install back cards, follow these steps:

Step 1 Connect your wriststrap to the rear of the chassis.

Step 2 From the rear of the chassis, install an SCC back card in slot 9 (see Figure 2-7).

Step 3 Install and secure DS3 back cards behind each BSC front card, in slots 11, 13, 15, and 16.
