WAN CiscoView is a JAVA-based device management software GUI application that allows you to:
When you start the CiscoView application, the CiscoView-Main window opens. (See Figure 1-1.)
Step 1 To open a device, from the CiscoView-Main window, type the IP address or name of the host in the Select Device field. If you are going to perform configuration tasks on the device, the write community name of the device must be registered in the Community tab of the Preferences option.
Step 2 Press Enter.
In this case the CiscoView-Main window displays the front view of the MGX 8230 shelf in the device window of the display.
The display you see when you first enter CiscoView is of the front panel of the device. To display the rear view of the shelf, right click around the cards in the device portion of the Main window, and select Rear.
Click on various parts of the graphic (the device itself, lines, cards, and ports) to select them. Right clicking on parts of the display brings up popup menus that allow you to configure or monitor a device, card, or port. For example, if you are using a BXM card and need port information, select a port on the display and click the right mouse button. A popup menu opens. Within this menu, select one of the options to configure or monitor the port.
The buttons on the left side of the display are as follows:
Telnet | Opens a Telnet window. |
CCO | Launches your browser and connects to the CCO web page. |
Cisco Support | Opens a new case to TAC. |
Preferences | Provides SNMP, Community, Look and Feel, and Debug settings. |
About | Provides information on the version of CiscoView installed on your system. |
Help | Launches CiscoView online help. |
The ports, connectors, and LEDs are color-coded to display their status. Table 1-1 describes the commonly used colors and their meaning.

CiscoView displays two primary types of information. Configuration information, which includes data such as information about a device chassis; and performance information, which includes data such as the number of Ethernet errors during a given period.
CiscoView displays configuration information in menu form in a configuration window. When you right click on a card, port, or line graphic, and select Configure from the popup menu, CiscoView displays the corresponding Configuration information. The information is displayed as a list of fields for a single port, or as a table that includes fields for multiple ports.
CiscoView displays performance information in the Monitor window. To view performance information, select Monitor from a component popup menu. The information is displayed in a dashboard format.
Select a card (on the rear or front view) to display the Card Configuration dialogs by doing one of the following:
To display the configuration parameters for a particular card, select the name of the category from the Category pull-down menu at the top of the dialog.
There are two ways to select the line or port to display the appropriate line configuration dialog:
