Preface

This hardware installation guide describes the physical installation of the Service Expansion Shelf (SES). The SES is a 12-slot chassis, built on the MGX 8850 architecture, that can be used either as a feeder shelf for the IGX 8400 series switch or as a PNNI controller for the BPX 8600 or IGX 8400 series switch.

This preface contains the following sections:

Audience

This publication is intended for the person who will do the physical installation of the SES. In either SES application (that is, as a feeder to the IGX switch or as a PNNI controller for the BPX or IGX switch) the SES is typically collocated and rack-mounted with either an IGX 8400 series switch or a BPX 8600 series switch. The SES installer should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician, as well as with the Cisco IGX or BPX switch.


Note This SES hardware installation guide covers only the physical installation, that is the rack-mounting and the power connections, of the Service Expansion Shelf. The connection and configuration of the SES for each of its distinct applications is covered in other companion documentation as described in the section "Related Documentation."


Warning Installation of the equipment should be performed by trained service personnel.

Organization

This document is organized into the following chapters and appendices:

Chapter 1

Provides an overview, including a physical description, of the SES and its two current applications, feeder to the IGX switch or PNNI controller for the BPX switch.

Chapter 2

Provides the procedures for rackmounting and connecting power to the SES.

Chapter 3

Maintenance

Provides the removal and replacement procedures for SES subassemblies.

Appendix A

Lists the relevant specifications for the SES.

Appendix B

Provides information about the cables and connectors used with SES

Appendix C

Provides samples of how various Cisco wide area switching equipment (that is, the IGX switch, BPX switch, etc., can be installed in the same rack.

Glossary

Provides definitions of the terms and acronyms that are relevant to the Service Expansion Shelf.
