Introduction

Introduction

This manual provides you information on how to perform an automated, manual, or upgrade installation of Cisco StrataView Plus (SV+) 9.1 and its associated software programs on a workstation running the Solaris 2.5.1 operating system.

This chapter describes the minimum hardware and software requirements for the Cisco SV+ 9.1 release. It also provides a list of reference documentation.

Chapter 2 describes how to perform the automated Cisco SV+ 9.1 installation procedures.

Chapter 3 describes how to perform the manual Cisco SV+ 9.1 installation procedures.

Chapter 4 describes how to perform an upgrade from a previously installed Solaris version of
Cisco SV+ to Cisco SV+ Release 9.1.

Chapter 5 describes how to configure and invoke the Cisco SV+ 9.1 product.

Chapter 6 describes how to perform the Cisco SV+ 9.1 stand-alone Statistics Collection Manager installation procedures.

Cisco SV+ Release 9.1 must be installed on a Sun workstation. For a list of the Sun workstations you can install Cisco SV+ Release 9.1, see Section, "Minimum Requirements". The Solaris 2.5.1 operating system must be installed on the Sun workstation before you install Cisco SV+ 9.1. Appendix A, "Installing Solaris and Disk Partitioning", provides instructions on installing the Solaris 2.5.1 operating system. For complete details, refer to the appropriate Sun documentation.

Hewlett Packard's OpenView 5.01 is used to produce Cisco SV+ 9.1 topologies and for logging traps. If HP OpenView 5.01 is already installed on your workstation, or you do not want to use HP OpenView 5.01 to produce topologies or log traps, proceed with the installation of Cisco SV+ 9.1. Otherwise, you must install HP OpenView 5.01 on the Sun workstation before you install
Cisco SV+ 9.1. For instructions on installing HP OpenView, refer to the appropriate HP documentation.

Note You are required to have UNIX system level experience to install Cisco SV+ 9.1 and its associated software programs.

Cisco StrataView Plus Hardware Requirements

The minimum recommended hard disk and memory configuration requirements are provided in this section.

Cisco StrataView Plus Software Requirements

The Cisco SV+ 9.1 NMS workstation requires the following software components:

The following software packages are provided on the Cisco SV+ Release 9.1 CD:

The Cisco SV+ 9.1 NMS workstation interfaces with the following optional software applications:

For detailed information on how to install the Stand-alone version of SCM, see Chapter 6, "Statistics Collection Manager Stand-alone Installation Procedures".

Cisco SV+ 9.1 supports the following Cisco software:

Configuring Your System for Multinetwork Support

Cisco SV+ can manage up to forty, multiple networks. When you plan to manage more than eight networks with Cisco SV+, you should configure the Cisco SV+ workstation's buffer cache to 6MB (6 x 1024). You can do this configuration either before or after installing Cisco SV+. You must add the following entry (as user root) to the /etc/system file, and then reboot the workstation for this change to take affect.

set bufhwm=6144

Specify the following command (as user root) to check the current size of the buffer cache. The number shown is in bytes. Therefore, divide it by 1024 to convert it to kilobytes, or divide it by 1048576 to convert it to megabytes.

host# sysdef | grep bufhwm

Planning and Configuring the Informix OnLine Database

The Cisco SV+ installation allows you to configure the Cisco SV+ Informix OnLine database into one or three partitions. As each partition can be on a separate drive, multi-partition databases are intended to improve the performance of disk I/O operations. In a single partition database configuration, you should create the root database, the Cisco SV+ database, and the log database in the same partition.

In the two partition database configuration, you should create the Cisco SV+ database in one partition, and the root database and the log database in the other partition.

In the three partition database configuration, you should create the root database, the Cisco SV+ database, and the log database in separate partitions.

Note Performance improvement of the three partition database over the two partition database may be insignificant.

You are prompted for the database partition information during the Cisco SV+ installation (either automated or manual) process as follows:

Disk Configuration Migration to StrataView Plus Release 9.1.05 SOL
              1) Single Raw Database Disk
              2) Multiple Raw Database Disk
              x) To Exit

You select the multiple disk partition configuration by selecting option number two (Multiple Raw Database Disk) when prompted for the disk configuration.

See Chapter 9, "Database Management" in the Cisco StrataView Plus Operations Guide for a more detailed explanation of the Informix OnLine database.

Reference Documentation

An installation guide focuses on installing the product. For complete information on other software products, refer to documentation specific to that product, such as Sun, HP, or Informix documentation for users and administrators.
