Cisco StrataView Plus Start-up

Cisco StrataView Plus Start-up

Overview

This chapter describes two procedures for starting Cisco StrataView Plus (SV+). You can start the SV+ Core, Desktop, and HP OpenView processes, which provides you access to all of the SV+ features, or you can start only the SV+ Desktop process, which provides you access to only the SV+ Desktop features.

SV+ also allows you to restrict access to your network and SV+ features via a restricted-access user ID (svplus-r).

Cisco SV+ Main Menu

Upon invoking SV+, the Main Menu is displayed. You primarily use this menu to initiate the SV+ core processes and to access the SV+ Desktop window. You can also use this menu to include database details, display the statistics GUI (Graphical Users Interface), and configure INS/DAS. The following subsections describe the Main Menu options.

Figure 1-1: SV+ Main Menu

1) Start Core Menu Option

Specify 1 at the prompt then press the Return key to initiate SV+ daemon processes.

2) Stop Core Menu Option

Specify 2 at the prompt then press the Return key to stop the SV+ daemon processes.

3) Start Desktop Menu Option

Specify 3 at the prompt then press the Return key to display the SV+ desktop window.

4) Dump db Data

This option is no longer used. To save the data in the Informix database, see Appendix B, "Informix OnLine Database, Backup, and Changing Size", for detailed information.

5) Current db Name

Specify 5 at the prompt then press the Return key to see the name of the database currently loaded in SV+.

6) Start Statistics Mgr

Specify 6 at the prompt then press the Return key to display the SV+ Statistics Manager window. See Chapter 4, "Statistics Collection Manager", for more information about the Statistics Manager window.

X) Exit

Specify X at the prompt then press the Return key to exit StrataView Plus without shutting down the SV+ core processes.

Restricted Access

To provide limited access to your network, you must login to SV+ as user svplus-r. This login account is created on the SV+ workstation when SV+ is installed.

When you log in with this user ID, you are presented with only two choices on the SV+ Main Menu:

1) SV+ Desktop
X) Exit.

In the SV+ Desktop window, which is displayed when option 1 is selected, the Reports, Equipment Management, and SV+ Admin buttons are disabled.

The Topology, Connection Management, Network Browser, and New Reports buttons are functional, however, restricted users cannot use the topology map's node administration feature, nor can they modify, add, or delete connections using the Connection Manager window. This window is opened in read-only mode.

Accessing the SV+ NMS Tools

This section describes how to start all of the SV+ processes (Core, Desktop, and HP OpenView) or just the Desktop process from the SV+ workstation. For information on how to start all of the SV+ processes and obtain access to the complete SV+ tool set, see "SV+ Core, Desktop, and HP OpenView Start-up".

SV+ Core, Desktop, and HP OpenView Start-up

To start the SV+ Core, Desktop and HP OpenView processes, we recommend you display two C-shell windows on your workstation. The first C-shell window is used to start the SV+ Core and Desktop processes. The second C-shell window is used to start HP OpenView.

Note Restricted access users cannot start the SV+ Core process. The SV+ Core process must already be running before a restricted access user attempts to start the Cisco SV+ Desktop.

In the first C-shell window, do the following:

    1. Log in as user svplus at the SV+ workstation.

    2. Start SV+:

    3. From the SV+ Main Menu, start the SV+ Core process. Specify 1 at the prompt then press the Return key to initiate the Start Core option.

    4. From the SV+ Main Menu, start the SV+ Desktop process. Specify 3 at the prompt then press the Return key to initiate the Start Desktop option.

From the other C-shell window:

    1. Invoke the HP OpenView application:

    2. Double-click on the StrataView Network icon to display the Panner: Network StrataView Topology window.

    3. From the pull-down menus, you can launch all of the SV+ features. Note, many menu items are disabled until an appropriate element is selected, for example, a node in the topology.

The SV+ Desktop Window

The SV+ Desktop window provides icon buttons that correspond to the principle StrataView Plus applications. You click on a particular icon to launch the corresponding application you need for network management, monitoring, report generation, and administration tasks. All the Cisco SV+ applications are described in subsequent chapters in this book.

File - Exit Menu Option

You select this option to terminate all desktop processes and exit the SV+ Desktop window. When you select this option, you are prompted to either continue or abort the exit request.

Help - On Version Menu Option

You select this option to view the version number of the SV+ software currently running on your workstation.

Starting Additional GUIs

Note To run multiple StrataView GUIs, you must have a multi-use Wingz license.

More than one workstation can run the Cisco SV+ GUI simultaneously. You must log into the workstation running SV+ from a Wingz licensed workstation, which is operating on a common LAN, and then access the Cisco SV+ desktop from the Menu Bar.

Note SV+ Core processes running on a workstation can be stopped from any other workstation that is running a remote SV+ session through that workstation. For example, when you log into a workstation running the SV+ Core process, and select Stop Core (Option 2), you are terminating the SV+ Core processes for not only yourself, but for all others using those SV+ Core processes. Therefore, you must be careful not to select the Stop Core option when you are through.
