Terminology

The WAN Service Node with the Extended Services Processor (ESP) provides new features to traditional Cisco WAN switching networks. To avoid confusion, some of the terms and acronyms that have been used in this manual to describe the WAN Service Node and its features are collected and defined here. This list does not include standard terms that can be found in the Cisco Systems Internetworking Terms and Acronyms or the glossary of the Cisco StrataCom System Overview.

ACR--Available cell rate.

AFI--Authority and format identifier.

ASI--ATM Service Interface.

ATM network--a traditional Cisco ATM network built around BPX switches.

ATM Network Interface Card (ATM NIC)--the ESP card that is used as the OC-3 interface to the BPX's BXM.

AW--Administrative weight.

AXIS--see the Cisco MGXTM 8220 edge concentrator.

BNI--broadband network interface.

BNM--broadband network module.

BPX Service Node--see WAN Service Node.

BXM--broadband switch module.

CAC--Connection Admission Control.

CDR--Call Detail Record.

Cisco BPX® 8600 series wide-area switch--the standards-based high-capacity (19.2 Gigabit) broadband ATM switches that provide backbone ATM switching and delivery of a range of user services.

Cisco MGXTM 8220 edge concentrator--an interface shelf designed to concentrate ATM and Frame Relay traffic on the edge of a WAN switching network. The MGX 8220 was previously referred to as the AXIS interface shelf.

Cisco StrataCom network--see WAN switching network.

Cisco StrataView Plus® Workstation--the network management platform for managing Cisco WAN switching networks. Cisco StrataView Plus® is the application software running on the workstation. StrataView Plus

CPE--customer premise equipment.

Extended Services Processor (ESP)--the rack-mounted adjunct processor that is co-located with a BPX switch and an MGX 8220 (all three units comprise a WAN Service Node) and has IP connectivity to a Cisco StrataView Plus Workstation.

GCAC--Generic CAC.

Interim Local Management Interface (ILMI)--used by the WAN Service Node for the ATM address registration across the ATM or Frame Relay UNIs.

Interim Inter-switch Signaling Protocol (IISP) is a static routing protocol defined by the ATM Forum while PNNI was being finalized.

LCN--Logical Channel Number, an internal resource used within the WAN Service Node.

Network to Network Interface (NNI)--the trunk between WAN Service Nodes or between a WAN Service Node and a foreign switch or network.

NSAP is Network Service Access Point.

Private Network to Network Protocol (PNNI)--scalable routing protocol defined by the ATM Forum for virtual circuit routing, as well as a signaling protocol between ATM switches.

PTSE--PNNI Topology State Element.

PTSP--PNNI Topology State Packet.

QoS--Quality of Service.

Resource partitioning--the division of port and trunk resources, such as VPI.VCIs, bandwidth, in between PVCs and SPVS (and SPVCs ) within the WAN Service Node.

Soft Permanent Virtual Circuit (SPVC)--a PVC that is administratively added to the network but routed through network using PNNI routing.

Switched Virtual Circuits (SVCs)--virtual circuits that are established on demand and torn down when transmission is complete. ATM or Frame Relay SVCs can be established over a Cisco WAN switching network through standardized signaling between CPE and the Service Node.

UNI port--the User-to-Network Interface (UNI) where the ATM or Frame Relay CPE connects to a Cisco WAN switching network. This is typically an MGX 8220 Service Module (AUSM) or Frame Relay Service Module (FRSM), or BPX 8620 ATM Service Interface (ASI) or BPX 8620 BXM. WAN Service Node UNI ports support standard signaling protocols for the establishment of ATM or Frame Relay SVCs.

UPC--Usage Parameter Control.

WAN Service Node--a closely integrated BPX switch, MGX 8220, and Extended Services Processor designed to support ATM and Frame Relay Switched Virtual Circuits as well as traditional private virtual circuits (PVCs). The WAN Service Node was previously referred to as the BPX Service Node.

WAN switching network--a public or private network built around Cisco cell-switching nodes. These nodes utilize Cisco's patented FastPacket technology and/or standards-based Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and are designed to support multiple applications integrating voice, constant and variable-bit rate data, video, frame relay, and ATM services on one multimedia wide area network. The WAN switching network was previously referred to as a Cisco-StrataCom network.
