Product Overview

General Description

WAN CiscoView is a GUI-based device management software application that allows you to do the following:

The ports, connectors, and LEDs are color-coded to display their status. Table 1-1 describes the commonly used colors and their meaning.

Understanding the Display

The display you see when you first enter CiscoView is of the front panel of the device. To change to the rear view, select View>Rear. Click on various parts of the graphic (the device itself, lines, cards, and ports) to select them.You can also use the right mouse button to get a popup menu that allows you to configure or monitor a device, card, or port. For example, if you are using a FRSM 8T1 card and need port information, select a port on the display and click the right mouse button. A popup menu opens. Within this menu, select one of the options to configure or monitor the port.

The buttons on the left side of the display are as follows:

Telnet

Launches a telnet window.

CCO

Launches your browser and connects to the CCO web page.


Note   This feature is not available for the current CiscoView Stand Alone Release.

Cisco Support

Opens a new case to TAC.


Note   This feature is not available for the current CiscoView Stand Alone Release.

Preferences

Launches a preferences configuration window. (see Figure **. This window allows you to set SNMP, Community, and Debug information.

About

Provides information on the version of CiscoView installed on your system.

Help

Launches CiscoView online help.


Note   This feature is not available for the current CiscoView Stand Alone Release.

Setting Up User Preferences for CiscoView

The User Preferences Window allows you to set up the following features in your CiscoView: browser:

The SNMP dialog parameters are described in Table 1-2.

Parameter Description

Chassis Polling Frequency (sec)

Determines how often CiscoView is updated with information from the Chassis. The default is
60 seconds.

SNMP Timeout (sec)

Determines the length of time CiscoView will attempt to connect to a device before timing out. The default is 15 seconds.

SNMP Retry Count

Determines how many times CiscoView will try to connect to a Chassis before timing out.

Default Read Community

The default communty string for CiscoView.

Default Write Community

The default communty string for CiscoView.

Show MIB Label as

Determines whether parameters will be displayed as Mib descriptors or their alias. The default is descriptors.

The Community dialog parameters are described in Table 1-3.

Parameter Description

Select Device

IP addresses of all Nodes the user has used CiscoView to log into. The ip of the current device is displayed. Select another device in the pulldown menu to see the device in CiscoView.

Read Comunity

Read community string for the current device.

Write Community

Write community string for the current device.

Use the Debug preferences dialog to view any SNMP Trace and/or Activity trace error messages that occured.

To view error messages, follow these steps:


Step 1   Select SNMP Trace or Activity Trace

Step 2   Click View Trace.

A Debug window shows all SNMP or Activity trace error messages that have occured.


Organizing Management Information

CiscoView displays two primary types of information:

    1. Configuration information—Displayed in CiscoView Configuration windows. The configuration windows allow you to perform some minor configuration tasks and view device configuration.

    2. Performance information—Displayed in CiscoView Monitor windows, which are sometimes referred to as dashboards. The Monitor Windows allouw you to monitor node performance.

Configuration and performance information is displayed for devices, cards, and ports.

Displaying Configuration Information

Use the Configuration menu to display configuration information, or select Configure from a component popup menu. CiscoView displays configuration information in the Configuration windows. The information is displayed as a list of fields for a single port, or as a table that includes fields for multiple ports.

Displaying Performance Information

CiscoView displays performance information using the Monitor menu in the main window to display performance information. To view performance information, select Monitor from a component popup menu. Performance information is displayed in a dashboard.

Selecting a Card

Select a card (on the rear or front view) to display the Card Configuration dialogs by doing one of the following:

To display the configuration parameters for a particular card, select the name of the category from the Category pull-down menu at the top of the dialog.

Selecting a Line or Port

There are three ways to select the line or port to display the appropriate line configuration dialog:

Using Online Help

Context-sensitive online help provides you with step-by-step instructions on how to use
WAN CiscoView. The online help system also provides a glossary and keyword search capability which Table 1-4 provides a quick guideline to access help from different places.


Note   Online help is not available on the current release of CiscoView.

Jumps and popups are available in the help system. Click a highlighted underlined topic to jump to a help window specific to that topic. Click Back on the menu bar to return to the previous help topic. Click a dotted underlined term to open a popup help window, which provides a definition of that term. To return to your previous help topic, press Enter when you go to a popup window.

Help Window Menu and Button Bars

Each help window has a menu bar and a button bar. The menu bar provides standard help functions for printing help topics, copying and pasting text from help topics, making online notes about particular help topics, and placing bookmarks.

The button bar provides the following buttons:

Exit Help

Select File>Exit on the menu bar in the Help window to exit Help.
