About This Manual

This section discusses the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the Cisco  IGX 8400 Series Reference publication.

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with the product. The Documentation CD-ROM is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up-to-date than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. The CD-ROM package is available as a single package or as an annual subscription. Objectives

This publication provides descriptions of the following IGX hardware with introductory information on the operation of each component (when appropriate):

• Enclosures

• Power sources (AC and DC)

• Controller cards (the CPU for the node)

• Frame relay interface cards

• Voice interface cards

• Serial data interface cards

• ATM interface cards

• Trunk cards

• Alarm cards

Audience

The Cisco StrataCom IGX 8400 Series Reference provides installers, operators, and network designers and managers with the necessary understanding to plan for IGX usage in a network. This manual applies to the IGX 8410, IGX 8420, and IGX 8430 in both rack-mount and stand-alone versions.

Organization

The major sections of this publication are as follows:

• Chapter 1, "Introduction to the IGX"

• Chapter 2, "Enclosure and Power Description"

• Chapter 3, "Processor and Trunk Cards"

Conventions

This publication uses the following conventions to convey instructions and information.

Command descriptions use these conventions:

• Commands and keywords are in boldface.

• Arguments for which you supply values are in italics.

• Required command arguments are inside angle brackets (< >).

• Optional command arguments are in square brackets ([ ]).

• Alternative keywords are separated by vertical bars ( | ).

Examples use these conventions:

• Terminal sessions and information the system displays are in screen font.

• Information you enter is in boldface screen font.

• Nonprinting characters, such as passwords, are in angle brackets (< >).

• Default responses to system prompts are in square brackets ([ ]).
