Administering Inbound Fax

Administering Inbound Fax

You can assign a personal private fax access number to subscribers. The Gateway assumes that all calls made to that number are fax calls.

Note  The tasks presented in this section are required only if you implement Inbound Fax Services.

How Inbound Fax Works

On an incoming fax, the Gateway receives the call and converts the data from fax format to tiff format. It then creates and sends an e-mail message with the .tif attachment to the subscriber. The Messaging Server receives the e-mail and performs an LDAP search for an e-mail alternate address that matches the inbound fax number. If a match is found, the Messaging Server places the e-mail message in the appropriate subscriber's unified mailbox via SMTP.

Prerequisites

Before you start administering Inbound Fax Services, ensure that the following tasks have been completed.

Configuring Inbound Fax Services

To configure inbound fax services on the uOne system, you perform these tasks:

Note Refer to the Gateway documentation for information on configuring the Gateway for inbound fax services.

Setting the Defaults for Message Notification

If you are adding fax services to your system, you may want to update the system-level notification defaults in the defaultData.ini file.

Step 1 Go to the GateServer on which UMSA resides.

Step 2 Type:
cd /home2/spmaster/ADMIN/cgi-bin/MSGadmin/MSGdata

Step 3 Edit the defaultData.ini file and set the following attributes (Table 9-1).

[addNotifyforNewSub]
numOfAttrs=<XX>
attr<YY>=<Value>
referenceAttr=<NotificationMethod>

file

Table 9-1: defaultData.ini Attributes
Attribute Description Valid Values

[addNotifyforNewSub]

The attribute list label.

Should not be edited.

numOfAttrs=<XX>

This entry can be changed as long as it matches the actual number of attributes defined.

XX=A number

attr<YY>=<Value>

YY is a numeric value corresponding to its position within the attribute list. There must be no gaps in the numbering of options.

Value describes which message type and urgency will apply to this type of message notification (e.g. pager or SMSI)

YY = A number

Value =

Notifyvoicenormal

Notifyvoiceurgent

Notifyfaxnormal

Notifyfaxurgent

Notifyemailnormal

Notifyemailurgent

referenceAttr=
<NotificationMethod>

Describes the notification method to be used as defined by the attribute list.

This field can be edited, but should not be removed.

NotificationMethod=

pager—sends a page on every message as defined by the attribute list.

cn—sends an SMSI signal on every message as defined by the attribute list.

Provisioning Subscribers for Inbound Fax Service

For each fax subscriber, you must set up the inbound fax number that callers use to send faxes to the subscriber. To do so, you must enter the appropriate number in Inbound Fax Number attribute on the Modify a Subscriber screen in UMSA. See "Modifying Subscriber Accounts" section for the procedure to set up that attribute.

Note UMSA automatically builds the e-mail alternate address for each subscriber's inbound fax number.
