Backing Up and Restoring

Backing Up and Restoring

It is highly recommended that you regularly back up your uOne system. This prevents data loss and ensures you can re-create the system in an emergency. This chapter explains the process for backing up and restoring your uOne data including the following topics:

The MCS-7835 system ships with a Compaq tape drive pre-installed. During the installation process, the Automated Installer configures the tape drive for utilization by the Cisco MCS Backup Utility. The following sections provide information on backing up and restoring your uOne system using the Cisco MCS Backup Utility. Manual instructions on the backup and restore process are also provided.

Using Cisco MCS Backup Utility

During installation, you are prompted to configure the Cisco MCS Backup Utility to set up the uOne system as a backup server. This utility allows you to back up CallManager and uOne data that resides on the local or remote MCS servers to a configured tape device, network share point, or local directory. The Cisco MCS Backup Utility consists of three utilities for viewing, configuring backup settings, and restoring, as well as archiving and tape utilities. The default setting is Tuesday through Saturday at 2:00am. You can also schedule a time for the log files to be cleaned from the system.

Cisco MCS Backup Utility Process

The Cisco MCS Backup Utility runs automatically as a service on the NT system. By default, the Cisco MCS Backup Utility logs in as Administrator. The backup process copies all files to a staging directory, then archives the staging directory to tape or other designated location in the Cisco MCS Backup Configuration, using a Windows implementation of UNIX tar. The backup session automatically starts at the time and date scheduled in the Cisco MCS Backup Configuration settings. You can choose to start the backup now by selecting Start Backup Now option from the Cisco MCS Backup Utility popup menu.

Note Before backing up your system, you need to stop all uOne services and Netscape services.

Cisco MCS Restore Utility

If your system was configured to back up to a local or shared network directory, all data backed up from the target server during the backup process is stored in one file called MCS.tar. Each time the backup is performed, the MCS.tar file is overwritten. You need to rename or archive the MCS.tar file after each back up to retain copies. When you restore data from the Cisco MCS Backup Utility, the backup file to be restored must be named MCS.tar.

Restoring Backup Information

To restore information from a backup generated by the Cisco MCS Backup Utility, use the following procedures.

Use the Cisco MCS Restore Utility to restore your information as follows.

Step 1 Be sure you have logged on to the uOne Server as Administrator (admin/admin).

Step 3 From the Programs menu, select Cisco MCS Backup, then Cisco MCS Restore. The Cisco MCS Restore Utility opens.

Note If the Cisco MCS Viewer Utility icon does not appear on Start menu or the Windows NT shell tray, you may need to log in as local administrator account. By default, the backup utility service is set to the local administrator.

Step 4 If you are restoring information from a backup tape, insert the backup tape into the tape drive of the uOne system.

Step 5 At the dialog for Step 1 of 3, select the location of the backup to be restored (for example, the Tape Device). If your system was configured to a local or shared network directory, the entire backup will be contained in a file called MCS.tar.

Step 6 Click Next. The Cisco MCS Restore Utility will take a few minutes to set up the backup media to a local staging directory. No files are overwritten during this process.

Note If the Cisco MCS Restore Utility fails to verify the staging directory against the backup media, the dialog will reflect this information. You can check the log file at C:\Winnt\Stiback.log, or click Back to re-enter your settings.

Step 7 On the dialog for Step 2 of 3, when the targets are staged, select the Target to be restored. If the target is remote, you must supply a username and password with local administrative rights.

Step 8 Click Next.

Step 9 A prompt appears informing you that if you proceed, you will overwrite the target server and all existing data will be lost. Click Yes to proceed.

Step 10 On the dialog for Step 3 of 3, the uOne target will be restored from the staging directory. The Cisco MCS Restore Utility will stop the following services before performing the restore:

It then proceeds to restore the selected target from the staging directory.

The utility shows a log of the restore process. Upon completion of the restore process, the dialog text will change to inform you that the target information has been successfully restored. You can double-click on any line in the log to see full text information. The following services are automatically restarted after the files have been restored:
