Back Up and Restore

Back Up and Restore

It is highly recommended that you regularly backup your uOne system. This prevents data loss and ensures you can recreate the system in an emergency. This chapter explains the process for backing up and restoring your uOne data.

Configuring the Tape Drive

Note We recommend that you use the Compaq 20/40 GB DAT tape drive for backing up and restoring the uOne system. Using any other tape drive is not recommended or supported.

Step 1 Connect the tape drive per the instructions provided with the drive. Care should be taken that the tape drive cable is connected to the SCSI port next to the Ethernet port of the NIC card and not to the SCSI port provided next to the keyboard and mouse port.

Step 2 From the Windows taskbar, select Start, then Programs, then choose Administrative Tools, then Backup. A dialog box will appear stating that the driver for the tape device is not loaded.

Step 3 Close the dialog box and select Start from the Windows taskbar, then Settings, then choose Control Panel. Double-click on the Tape Devices icon.

Step 4 A pop-up list of drivers appears. Select the Have disk option. Insert the driver CD provided with the tape device into the CD drive and click on Browse. Selection the location: <CD-drive>:\Drivers\NT4\I386\

Step 5 Click on OK.

Step 6 The list of drivers will appear. Select the driver DDS (1-4) Tape Driver Autoloader, then click on OK.

Backing up System

Step 1 Select Start from the Windows taskbar, then Programs, then Administrative Tools, then choose Backup.

Step 2 Select the C: drive of the system and click on the Backup button. A request for parameters for the backup procedure will appear.

Step 3 Select the full backup option with full details. Note also the log file location for the procedure. Click on OK.

Step 4 The Backup will start. A prompt will appear for the files that will be skipped over (the ones currently in use), as those files are opened. Press Cancel to agree to skip each file. (If Cancel is not selected, the file will be skipped after a 30 second delay.)

Backing Up uOne

Step 1 Create a temporary file backup folder. The folder c:\uOne Temp is suggested.

Step 2 Copy the files from the c:\CiscoSystems\uone\parms to c:\uOneTemp. Be sure to include all files from the sub-directory parms, including all.ini files, configuration files and sub-folders.

Step 3 Create a sub-folder called c:\uOneTemp\ldapdata..

Step 4 Save a copy of the Directory data:

db2bak NetscapeTemp
db21dif NetscapeTemp.ldif
copy ldif\NetscapeTemp.ldif c:\uOneTemp
copy NetscapeTemp c:\uOneTemp

Step 5 Run the Windows NT backup on the complete C: drive.

The logs for the backup would show certain files, for example:

This procedure takes approximately 15 minutes when the specified tape drive from Compaq is in use.

Scheduling the Backup

The following steps will assist in scheduling your backup.

Step 1 Select Start, then click on Settings, and select Control Panel.

Step 2 Double-click on Services.

Step 3 Select the Scheduler service.

Step 4 Click the Startup button to the right of the dialog box.

Step 5 Select Automatic from the Startup Type selection menu.

Step 6 Click OK. This will activate the Scheduler service. The next time the server starts, the Scheduler service will start automatically.

Step 7 With the Scheduler service running on the server, you can then set up a backup schedule for the server by using the AT command at the command line interface. A batch file containing all the commands and file paths you wish to backup can be created to automate the process. See "Automating the Backup Process" section below.

Example 5-1:

An example command string for backing up a batch file called u1bak.bat every Monday through Friday night at 30 minutes past midnight would be:

AT 00:30 /every:M,T,W,Th,F,S,Su c:\u1bak.bat

Note Additional information, including examples on the AT command of Scheduler, is located in the Windows NT 4.0 Help files.

Restoring

Step 1 The Restore application of Windows NT must be run to retrieve drive C:.

Step 2 After the restore from the tape is done, verify that the backup ldif and the database exist in the directories C:\netscape\suitespot\slap-<machine>\ldif and C:\netscape\suitespot\slapd-<machine>\bak

Note If the backup copy of the ldif file and the db file are not there, copy the NetscapeTemp.ldif and the folder NetscapeTemp from the C:\uOne Temp folder to the directories listed in Step 2.

Step 3 Stop the Netscape Directory Server by selecting Start from the Windows taskbar.

Step 4 Then select Settings and choose Control Panel.

Step 5 Select the Services icon.

Step 6 Select Netscape Directory Server and click on Stop. Close the Services window.

Step 7 Run the executable bak2db from the command prompt at C:\netscape\suitespot\slapd-servername Bak2db path. This creates the db directory for the system from the backup copy

Step 8 Run the executable ldif2db from the command prompt at Ldif2db NetscapeTemp.ldif. This recreates the subscriber database.

Verify that the files in the folder C:\CiscoSystems\uOne\parms have been returned by the restore operation. If they have not, copy the same files from the folder C:\uOneTemp.

Restart Netscape Directory Server as follows:

Step 1 Restart Netscape Directory Server by selecting Start from the Windows taskbar.

Step 2 Then selecting Settings and Control Panel.

Step 3 Select the Services icon.

Step 4 Select Netscape Directory Server and click on the Start button.

Step 5 Close the Services window and the Control Panel dialog box.
