Networking Multiple uOne 4.1E Systems

Customer who want to deploy multiple uOne 4.1E systems can network them together. Networking uOne services will make multiple uOne systems appear as if they were one. Customers must decide in advance that they will be networking their uOne systems, and not bring up individual services on each uOne, then decide later to network them. This would cause additional data to be added to the indivudal systems that would require migrating that data. The uOne documentation does not cover or support the migration of data onto existing systems.

Networking the systems is done by creating a Primary system, which will house a centralized directory, and any number of secondary systems, which will point to the Primary system with the centralized directory. Bandwidth specifications for networking multiple uOne systems follow.

Bandwidth Specifications

The recommended bandwidth between uOne servers for each session is 128kbps on a clear, non-shared channel. The performance over a high bandwidth network (10MB/100MB), using the retrieval of the spoken name for greetings as an example, is approximately 2 seconds per session. The performance over a low bandwidth network (32 to 512 kbps), using the same example, is approximately 3 seconds per session.

Setup of the Primary uOne System

For this system, use the instructions in the uOne Support Guide as they are in the original document.

This should complete the installation of the networked uOne system.

Setup of the Secondary uOne Systems

Step 1 Connect the Primary and Secondary machines through the network (it is recommended that a check be made to assure that the local and remote boxes are able to communicate over the network via ping and/or telnet).

Step 2 Install the Messaging Server. The instructions in the uOne Support Guide, Netscape Messaging Server Installation should be used. At the point in the installation when the Messaging Server is searching for the Directory Server, an Administration LDAP Configuration dialog box will be displayed:

Step 3 Install the Directory Server on the same machine as the Messaging Server using the instructions provided in the uOne Support Guide, Netscape Directory Server Installation. Answer "yes" when asked if there are existing users in the LDAP directory. Disable the Directory Server under the Services section. (Disabling the Directory Server ensures that it will not automatically restart after the client machine reboots.)

Step 4 Administering Notification Services. Manually add a notifier mailbox in the centralized directory database for the Messaging Server of this box and correct the plug-in entry in the administration page for the Messaging Server. When prompted, identify the new Notifier mailbox ID for the remote Directory server as:
notifier-<machinename>@<machinename>.cisco.com

Step 5 Do not install Apache/uPower on the local system. uPower will be used on the Centralized Directory server to administer users.

Step 6 Installing uOne. Install uOne, administering it with the Centralized Directory and local Messaging Server information. These steps are identical to those in the uOne Support Guide, uOne Installation and Configuration until the prompt inquiring about existing users in the LDAP database appears. Select Yes to confirm existing users.

Step 7 Configuring the Messaging Server. Open the Netscape Administration page and select the Messaging Server. Click on the Plug-in button and select Edit Config File. This action displays the list of configuration files and shows the name notifier@machine name. Change the name of the machine to notifier-<machinename>@<machinename>.cisco.com.

Step 8 Configure CallManager in the same manner as described in the uOne Support Guide, uOne Installation and Configuration.

Step 9 Adding users. Add the users to the database of the remote system using the primary machine. These steps, which use uPower/UMSA, are the same as in uOne Support Guide, uOne Installation and Configuration, only the URL name is changed. Enter the URL:
Ihttp://<remove machine name>:280/MSGadmin.

Installation Issues

Please note that this CD is NOT intended for upgrades, but for new installations only. If the uOne software is reinstalled over existing software, it will overwrite any existing files. To determine whether uOne is currently installed, please check Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel folder of the machine in use.

It is recommended that after a successful installation, the system should be backed up using the Backup procedures described in the Backup and Restore of the uOne System section of these notes.

Domain Name Precondition

Only the main domain level name is used during the installation. For example, abc.star.edu would not be introduced as the domain name, only star.edu, the main domain level, can be used or the installation will fail. To perform a domain name check, which is essential before installation:

Step 1 Click the Start button in the Windows task bar, select Settings, then Control Panel.

Step 2 Double-click the Network icon in the Control Panel window. This action brings up the Network dialog box.

Step 3 Click the Protocols tab.

Step 4 Select TCP/IP Protocol in the Network Protocols list box.

Step 5 Click the Properties button located below the Network Protocols list box. This action brings up the Microsoft TCP/IP Protocol dialog box.

Step 6 Click the DNS tab in the Microsoft TCP/IP Protocol dialog box.

Step 7 The Host Name and Domain text boxes should display the hostname and domain of the machine. If not, type in the correct hostname and/or domain in the appropriate text box. It is important that the main domain name contain no more than one period.

Step 8 Click the OK button to close the Microsoft TCP/IP Protocol dialog.

Step 9 Click the OK button to close the Network dialog.

Step 10 Close the Control Panel window.

Note If an incorrect domain name is used during the installation of Windows NT and CallManager, but uOne has not yet been installed, the domain may be changed by choosing Start from the Windows taskbar, Settings, Control Panel, then double-clicking on the Password icon. Change the Windows NT password to conform to the parameters described above. If the domain name error is not corrected and uOne has been installed with this error in place, the system must be completely uninstalled (see the uOne Support Guide) and then re-installed.

Password for Administrator

A password should not be used for NT Administrator. To change the password to anything other than a blank will cause the Netscape Messaging Server to fail to startup after installation.

Unattended Installation

Changes to the uOne system following installation using the Unattended Installation procedure must be saved or uOne will not operate properly. Symptoms will include not being able to add a new user, not being able to modify any of the user attributes using uPower UMSA, and not being able to modify user attributes using uOne; this includes changing greetings, business hours, the way messages are played, etc.

To make modifications on the Netscape Directory Server Administration page:

Step 1 From the Administration page, make the desired changes. The Apply button will flash.

Step 2 When shutting down the Directory server, a prompt will ask that the user Apply Manual Changes or Undo Manual Changes.

Step 3 Select Apply Manual Changes. If this option is not selected, CHANGES MADE WILL NOT TAKE EFFECT.

Backup and Restore of the uOne System

Configuring the Tape Drive

Step 1 Connect the tape drive per the instructions provided with the drive. Care should be taken that the tape drive cable is connected to the SCSI port next to the Ethernet port of the NIC card and not to the SCSI port provided next to the keyboard and mouse port.

Step 2 From the Windows taskbar, select Start, then Programs, then choose Administrative Tools, then Backup. A dialog box will appear stating that the driver for the tape device is not loaded.

Step 3 Close the dialog box and select Start from the Windows taskbar, then Settings, then choose Control Panel. Double-click on the Tape Devices icon.

Step 4 A pop-up list of drivers appears. Select the Have disk option. Insert the driver CD provided with the tape device into the CD drive and click on Browse. Selection the location: <CD-drive>:\Drivers\NT4\I386\

Step 5 Click on OK.

Step 6 The list of drivers will appear. Select the driver DDS (1-4) Tape Driver Autoloader, then click on OK.

Step 7 Select Start from the Windows taskbar, then Programs, then Administrative Tools, then choose Backup.

Step 8 Select the C: drive of the system (or the drive that uOne is installed and running on) and click on the Backup button. A request for parameters for the backup procedure will appear.

Step 9 Select the full backup option with full details. Note also the log file location for the procedure. Click on OK.

Step 10 The Backup will start. A prompt will appear for the files that will be skipped over (the ones currently in use), as those files are opened. Press Cancel to agree to skip each file. (If Cancel is not selected, the file will be skipped after a 30 second delay.)

Backing Up

Step 1 Create a temporary file backup folder. The folder \uOne Temp is suggested.

Step 2 Copy the files from the <uOne Folder>\parms to the temporary file backup folder created in Step 1. Be sure to include all files from the sub-directory parms, including all.ini files, configuration files and sub-folders.

Step 3 Create a sub-folder to the folder created in Step 1 (example: \uOneTemp\ldapdata).

Step 4 Save a copy of the Directory data:

Step 5 Run the Windows NT backup on the complete C: drive.

The logs for the backup would show certain files, i.e.,

Folders <uOne folder>\admin\logs<uOne Folder>\containers\system<uOne folder>\logs\

<uOne Folder>\temp\Netscape\Suitespot\slapd-<machine name>\db

Netscape\Suitespot\mailserver\mailbox\,user.\_lock_

Netscape\Suitespot\mailsever\spool\logs\

Netscape\Suitespot\mail-<fully qualified machine name>\logs\ will have certain files that are skipped. These "skipped" files are those in use when the backup is run. This does not hamper the restore as all of the configuration and database information has been backed up.

This procedure takes approximately 15 minutes when the specified tape drive from Compaq is in use.

Restore

Step 1 The Restore application of Windows NT must be run to retrieve drive C:.

Step 2 After the restore from the tape is done, verify that the backup ldif and the database exist in the directories \netscape\suitespot\slap-<machine>\ldif and \netscape\suitespot\slapd-<machine>\bak

Note If the backup copy of the ldif file and the db file are not there, copy the ldif NetscapeTemp.ldif and the folder NetscapeTemp from the \uOne Temp folder to the directories listed in Step 2.

Step 3 Stop the Netscape Directory Server by selecting Start, Settings, Control Panel, then double-clicking on the Services icon. Select Netscape Directory Server and click on Stop. Close the Services window.

Step 4 Run the executable "bak2db" from the command prompt at \netscape\suitespot\slapd-servername Bak2db - this will create the db directory for the system from the backup copy

Step 5 Run the executable "ldif2db" from the command prompt at Ldif2db NetscapeTemp.ldif - this will recreate the subscriber database.

Step 6 Verify that the files in the folder <uOne Folder>\parms have been returned by the restore operation. If they have not, copy the same files from the folder \uOneTemp.

Step 7 Restart Netscape Directory Server by double-clicking on the Services icon, selection Netscape Directory Server and clicking on the Start button. Close the Services window and the Control Panel dialog box.

Caveats for Release 4.1E

This section describes possible unexpected behavior by Release 4.1.

Following attributes are not relevant for this release:
AddCos: PA UM ini File Name - The value does not affect any settings. Max. reach nos. to try - The help information is not relevant to the screen. Streaming Option - The help information is not relevant to the screen.
ModifyCos: PA UM ini File Name - The value does not affect any settings. Streaming Option - The help information is not relevant to the screen. Broadcast Expire - The help information is not relevant to the screen.
ModifySub: Personal Access Telephone Number - The help information is not relevant.
uOne provides a warning about the recording time ending as standard feature and the default value of the warning is 30 seconds before the recording time will run out.
In this release, the warning value has been set to 0. Hence the user will get no warning about the recording time ending in 30 seconds. Instead, at the end of the recording time allowed (default value of 3 minutes), the user will be prompted to send or re-record or delete the message via EditRecording menu. If upgrading from previous 4.1E release, this default setting may need to be manually updated.
uOne provides for configurable greeting length as a standard feature configurable via administrative application uPower.
In this release, this feature has been disabled and the default maximum length of greetings has been set to 60 seconds. Hence end users can not record a greeting for more than 60 seconds. In addition, the administrator can not modify the maximum greeting recording duration for individual subscribers.
When a subscriber is deleted using uPower, the directory information about the user gets deleted. The mailbox of the user is not deleted and the messages which are left in the mailbox are still present on the hard disk.
If a new user is added with the same email id as one of the old users who has been deleted from uOne database, then the new user can access the old messages which have been left in the mailbox by previous user.
Workaround is to delete the folder corresponding to the deleted subscriber. To do this:
1. Using Windows Explorer, go to the directory where the user id folders are located. This is generally C:\Netscape\SuiteSpot\MailServer\mailbox.
2. Locate the folder corresponding to the user id that has been deleted.
3. Delete the folder.
This user id may now be used again.
During load test of uOne, it was observed that some of the uOne applications will not take new calls.
In order for the system to be responsive to the end user, the number of uOne applications running on a system has been increased.
For a 4 port uOne system, the number of uOne applications running will be 8 whereas for a 8 port uOne system, the uOne applications running will be 12.
Hence the task manager will show more number of uOne applications (by 4) than the capacity of a particular uOne installation.
