Accessing the System

Accessing the System

This chapter describes the procedures to make a connection to the different components of the system.

Accessing Different Components of the System

If you want to configure the system through the command-line interface (CLI), you must make a connection to the individual components of the system. These components can be accessed through the system alarm processor (SAP) by doing one of the following:

Caution Before you start configuring through the CLI, make sure you run the initial startup process as outlined in the Cisco ICS 7750 Getting Started Guide or the online help of the Cisco ICS 7700 System Manager. When the Cisco ICS 7750 is started for the first time, the Cisco ICS 7700 System Manager runs the initial startup process to collect certain configuration information that is necessary to communicate with your network.

Connecting a PC to the SAP

If you are configuring your system from a PC (not a dumb terminal), you need terminal emulation software. The PC uses this software to send commands to your system. Table 3-1 lists some common names for this software based on the type of PC you are using.

Windows 95, Windows NT

Windows 3.1

Terminal (included with Windows software)

Use a serial cable to connect the console port on the SAP to the PC COM port.

Figure 3-1 shows how to connect a PC to the SAP.

Connecting to the SAP

Start up your HyperTerminal or any similar terminal emulation software and follow this procedure:

Step 1   Enter a name for the terminal window.

The name could be anything as it is used only to provide a prompt. In the example in step 4, the name of the prompt is SAP. This name is not a hostname and is not used to map with the IP address.)

Step 2   Specify the COM port number to which your PC is connected (COM 1 or COM 2).

Step 3   Specify the following port settings so that your PC can communicate with your system:

  9600 baud
  8 data bits
  No parity
  1 stop bit
  No flow control

This establishes a connection to the system.

Step 4   Enter Ctrl\ to display the following prompts on the SAP:

SAP#
A. SAP
B. SPE
C. SSP
1. Slot 1
2. Slot 2
3. Slot 3
4. Slot 4
5. Slot 5
6. Slot 6
Esc. Return to current selected slot

Step 5   Select the slot you wish to connect to and press Enter.

Remote Configuration

To configure your system remotely, establish a Telnet session on your PC. Connect a PC to a terminal server, which is connected to the SAP. You need the IP address and the port number of the terminal server to make a connection. After the connection is established, enter Ctrl\ to display the menu (see Figure 3-2), and select the slot to which you wish to connect.

Figure 3-2 shows how to connect a terminal server to the SAP and establish a Telnet session on your PC.
