This document explains how to install or upgrade memory and data modules on system processing engine (SPE) 200 cards and multiservice route processor (MRP) 200 cards in the Cisco Integrated Communications System 7750, referred to from this point as the SPE 200, the MRP 200, and the Cisco ICS 7750, respectively.
Use this document in conjunction with the Cisco ICS 7750 Hardware Installation Guide and the Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information for the Cisco ICS 7750 publication.
This document contains the following sections:
This section describes the modules that you can install in an SPE 200 or an MRP 200.
The SPE 200 ships with 512 MB of RAM, provided by two dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs), as shown in Figure 3. This document provides instructions on how to remove and replace DIMMs in the SPE 200.
Table 1 provides information about the replacement DIMM for the SPE 200:

The MRP 200 ships with 64 MB of on-board RAM. You can install the following types of modules in an MRP 200:
This document provides instructions on how to install, remove, and replace DIMMs and PVDMs in the MRP 200.
Table 2 provides information about the modules that you can install in the MRP 200:

Warning The SPE 200 contains a lithium battery. There is the danger of explosion if the battery is replaced incorrectly. Replace the battery only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions. |
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage equipment and impair electrical circuitry. It occurs when electronic printed circuit cards are improperly handled. ESD can result in complete or intermittent failures. Always follow ESD-prevention procedures when removing and replacing the SPE 200 and the MRP 200:
Ensure that the chassis is electrically connected to earth ground.

Caution For safety, periodically check the resistance value of the antistatic strap, which should be between 1 and 10 megohms (Mohm). |
You need the following tools and equipment to remove and install SPE 200 or MRP 200 modules:
This section explains how to remove cards from the chassis. A typical Cisco ICS 7750 chassis is shown in Figure 1.

Warning Removing cards can expose you to high-energy (high-amperage) circuits and possible ejection of molten metal, or to the shock hazard of telephony circuit voltages. Be sure to remove all rings, watches, and other jewelry from fingers, wrists, and arms before removing cards. |

Note Depending on your system configuration, hot swapping SPE 200 cards or MRP 200 cards can adversely affect users connected to the system. For example, if Cisco CallManager is running on only one SPE 200, hot swapping that card disconnects calls to or from the PSTN and prevents the system from processing further PSTN traffic until an operational SPE 200 is properly re-inserted in the chassis. Similarly, hot swapping an MRP 200 that is in the process of routing voice or WAN traffic prevents that traffic from reaching its destination. Contact your Cisco sales representative for guidelines on installing cards and software on your system for maximum availability and redundancy. |

Note You do not need to turn off power for this hot-swap procedure. |
Follow these steps to remove the SPE 200 or the MRP 200 (see Figure 2):
Step 2 Press the SHTDN button, and confirm that the STATUS LED on the card first blinks and then goes off.
Step 3 After the STATUS LED turns off, press the upper and lower ejector levers outward at the same time to eject the card.
Step 4 Gently pull the card from the chassis.

This section shows you how to locate the DIMM and the PVDM slots on the SPE 200 and the MRP 200.
The SPE 200 has two DIMM slots. Figure 3 shows the location of the slots.

The MRP 200 has one DIMM slot and two PVDM slots. Figure 4 shows the location of these slots.

This section explains how to remove and install SPE 200 and MRP 200 modules.

Warning When performing the procedures in this section, wear grounding wrist straps to avoid ESD damage to the Cisco ICS 7750. Do not directly touch the backplane with your hand or any metal tool, to prevent personal injury or equipment damage. |
This section explains how to remove and install DIMMs.
DIMMs are manufactured with polarization notches to ensure proper orientation and with alignment holes to ensure proper positioning. Figure 5 shows the notches and holes on a DIMM. DIMMs are installed with the connector edge down.

Caution To avoid damaging ESD-sensitive components, observe all ESD precautions. To avoid damaging the underlying board, do not use excessive force when you remove or replace DIMMs. |

Follow these steps to remove a DIMM from an SPE 200.
Step 2 Locate the DIMM slots on the SPE 200. See Figure 3.

Step 3 Remove the DIMM by pushing the plastic release latches on each side of the DIMM slot outward. (See Figure 6.) This ejects the DIMM from its socket.
Step 4 Hold the DIMM by the edges with your thumbs and index fingers, and lift it out of the socket. Place the removed DIMM in an antistatic bag to protect it from ESD damage.
Step 5 If necessary, repeat Step 3 and Step 4 for the other DIMM.

Follow these steps to install a DIMM in an SPE 200.

Step 2 Remove the DIMM from its antistatic packaging.
Step 3 Hold the DIMM with the polarization notches closer to the card edge and with the connector edge at the bottom.

Step 4 Insert the DIMM perpendicular to the socket. Push the DIMM firmly into place (see Figure 7), using the minimum amount of force required. When the DIMM is properly seated, the socket guide posts fit through the alignment holes, and the locking spring clips click into place.

Step 5 Ensure that each DIMM is straight (perpendicular to the socket).
Step 6 If necessary, repeat Steps 3 through 5 for the other DIMM.

Note When you finish installing DIMMs, if you do not intend to install components on any other cards, proceed to the "Installing Cards" section. If you intend to install DIMMs on an MRP 200, continue. If you intend to install PVDMs on an MRP 200, proceed to the "Removing and Installing PVDMs" section. |
Follow these steps to remove the DIMM from an MRP 200.
Step 2 Locate the DIMM slot on the MRP 200. See Figure 4.

Step 3 Hold the DIMM with the polarization notches closer to the center of the card and with the connector edge at the bottom.

This section explains how to remove and install PVDMs on the MRP 200.
PVDMs are manufactured with a polarization notch to ensure proper orientation and with alignment holes to ensure proper positioning. Figure 10 shows the notch and the holes on a PVDM. PVDMs are installed connector-edge down.

Follow these steps to remove PVDMs:
Step 2 Locate the PVDM slots on the MRP 200. See Figure 4.

Step 3 Remove one PVDM at a time, beginning with the PVDM closest to the rear of the card. To lift the PVDM out of its socket, pull the locking spring clips on both sides outward, and tilt the PVDM toward the rear of the card, free of the clips. (See Figure 11.)

Step 4 Hold the PVDM by the edges with your thumbs and index fingers, and lift it out of the socket. Place the removed PVDM in an antistatic bag to protect it from ESD damage.
Step 5 Repeat Step 2 and Step 3 for the second PVDM.
Follow these steps to install PVDMs:
Step 2 Locate the PVDM slots on the MRP 200. See Figure 4.

Step 3 Hold the PVDM with the polarization notch closer to the card edge and the connector edge at the bottom. (See Figure 11.)
Step 4 Beginning with the slot closer to the front of the card, insert the PVDM into the connector slot at an angle, tilted toward the rear of the card. Align or move the PVDM into a vertical position (see Figure 12), using the minimum amount of force required. When the PVDM is properly seated, the socket guide posts fit through the alignment holes, and the connector springs click into place.
Step 5 Ensure that the PVDM is straight and that the alignment holes (as shown in Figure 11) line up with the plastic guides on the socket.

Step 6 Repeat Step 2 through Step 4 for the second PVDM.
This section explains how to install cards into the Cisco ICS 7750 chassis.

Caution When installing a card into the chassis, be sure to apply equal amounts of pressure to the top and bottom of the card. You can damage the card and the chassis backplane if you apply too much pressure to either the bottom or the top of the card. |
Follow these steps to install a card:

Step 2 With the top and bottom edges of the card in the card guides, gently slide the card into the chassis until you feel resistance. Because there are grounding clips near the front and rear of the card guides, you might need to increase the amount of force to get the card past the grounding clips, particularly if this is the first time a card has been inserted in this slot. If you encounter extreme resistance, pull the card out slightly, and push it in again.
Step 3 Press the upper and lower ejection levers inward at the same time until they lock into their slots. This step firmly seats the card into the chassis.
Step 4 Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to install additional cards.
Step 5 When all cards have been installed, completely tighten the card captive screws on the top and bottom of the panel.
To verify that the cards you have just installed are operating correctly, verify that the LEDs on those cards are functioning as described in Table 3.

Note The ALARM LED on Cisco ICS 7750 cards turns on (solid yellow) during the power-on self-test. If the ALARM LED on any card does not turn off at the completion of the power-on self-test, that card is not functioning correctly. If you installed DIMMs or PVDMs in the card that is not functioning correctly, remove the card, and verify that you installed the modules as directed in this document. For general information on solving problems with cards, refer to Chapter 5, "Solving Hardware Problems," in the Cisco ICS 7750 Administration and Troubleshooting Guide. |
