This document provides instructions for installing the rack-mounting hardware on a Cisco Media Conversion Server model 7830 or model 7835 and a standard 19-inch (48-cm) rack. Installation on standard racks requires extension brackets which are included. For installation on a Compaq rack, refer to the Compaq ProLiant DL380 Setup and Installation Guide included with the server.
The rack-mounting hardware needed for installation on a standard 19-inch (48-cm) rack includes the following:

Note Not all the parts included in the rack mount hardware box are necessary for every installation. You will have some parts left over. |
Each slide rail assembly supports one server. The assembly consists of an outer slide rail and an inner server rail. You should separate these pieces before attaching them to the frame. You will need to attach the inner server rails to the server chassis. Attach each slide rail to a front and rear rack extension bracket to form a rack-mounting slide assembly. Then fasten the rack-mounting slide assembly to the rack as one unit.

The components of the slide rail assembly include the outer bracket rail (1), the inner slide (2), and the server rail (3), as shown in Figure 1.

Use the following procedure, while referring to Figure 2, to detach the server rails from the slide rail assemblies.
Step 2 Extend the server rail from the outer bracket rail until the server rail release latch clicks (1). Holding down the latch on the back side of the server rail (2), slip the server rail out of the inner slide (3).

Step 3 Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the second slide rail assembly.
Step 4 Set the server rails to one side. You will attach them to the rack server chassis later, as discussed in the section, "Attaching Server Rails to the Server" section.
Figure 3 shows the separated slide rail and server rail.

The slide rail consists of two parts: a fixed outer bracket rail that attaches to the front and rear rack extension brackets and an inner slide on a steel ball-bearing movement. This inner slide does not detach. The front and rear rack extension brackets and the fronts of the slide rail can be identified using the following guidelines:
Follow the steps below to attach the extension bracket to the slide rail assembly:
Step 2 Fasten the front extension bracket to the outside of the front of the outer bracket rail with an 8x32x1/2 slotted screw, locking washer, and nut, as shown in Figure 5

Step 3 Move the inner slide rail in until it is extended approximately 1/2 inch (1.3 cm). A screw hole aligns on the outer bracket rail with the screw hole guide on the inner slide rail. The screw hole is about 2-1/2 inches (6.4 cm) from the front end of the slide rail assembly.
Step 4 Use a second 8x32x1/2 slotted screw, locking washer, and nut to fasten the front extension bracket to the outside of the slide rail assembly, as shown in Figure 6

Step 5 Pull out the slide rail until it is fully extended from the outer bracket rail and is locked into place.
Step 6 Measure the depth of the rack (front to rear).
Step 7 Attach the rear extension bracket on the outside of the rear of the outer bracket rail so that the total length of the assembly is the same as the depth measurement of the rack frame. Using the first and fourth screw holes of the outer bracket of the slide rail, fasten the rear extension bracket to the outer bracket rail with two 8x32x1/2 slotted screws, locking washers, and nuts, as shown in Figure 7. If necessary, adjust the position of the rear rack extension bracket until the rack-mounting slide assembly fits the rack frame properly.

Step 8 Repeat steps 1 through 6 for the second slide rail.
A total of four screws are used to secure each of the two assemblies. Once fastened, the extension brackets and the outer bracket rail form a rack-mounting slide assembly that attaches to the rack.

Caution To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, be sure that the rack leveling feet are extended to the floor and support the full weight of the rack. Each rack must be level and stable. Racks that are not coupled together require the installation of stabilizers. Stabilizers must be installed before you perform any work on the rack. |
Step 2 Attach a rack-mounting slide assembly to the front of the rack first, using one 10x32x1/2 slotted screw in the bottom hole of the bracket and one screw in the top hole of the bracket.
Step 3 Carefully align the rack-mounting slide assembly with the rear rack frame.
Step 4 Secure the back end of the mounting slide assembly to the back corner brace of the rack with one 10x32x1/2 slotted screw through the bottom hole of the bracket and one screw through the top hole of the bracket.
Follow the steps below to attach the server rails to the server.

Note The server rails attach to the server with the flat side of the rail against the server. The holes in the server rail will line up only one way with the chassis. |
Step 2 Attach the flat side of a component rail to each side of the server chassis with three 8x32x1/4 Phillips screws, as shown in the following figure. Do not use washers with the screws.

Follow the steps below to load the server into the rack. Ensure that the brackets are correctly aligned and installed and that the server fits before you continue.

Caution To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, at least two people are needed to safely unload the rack from the pallet. An empty rack may become unstable when being moved on its casters. Do not stand in front of the rack as it rolls down the ramp from the pallet, but handle it from the sides. |

Note To make the server lighter and more manageable, do not install hot-plug drives or redundant hot-plug power supplies into their cages in the server until after you load the server into the rack. |

Step 2 Carefully align the server component rails with the rack slide rails, as shown in Figure 10.

Step 3 Ensure that the server component rails are fully engaged into the plastic guides and bearings on the rack rails on both sides, and then slowly slide the server into the rack. The server slides forward until the release latches engage the rack rails.

Caution To reduce the risk of personal injury, be careful when pressing the server rail release latches and sliding the component into the rack. The slide rails could pinch your fingertips. |

Caution Be sure to keep the server parallel to the floor when sliding the server rails into the slide rails. Tilting the server up or down could result in damage to the rails. |
Step 4 Press the component rail release latches inward ([1] in Figure 11) on both sides of the server while sliding the server into the rack until the back of the server face plate meets the rack frame.

Note The first time you slide the server into the rack, you might need to apply some pressure. With continued use, the ball bearings in the slide will move easily. |

Note When servicing the server, fully extend the component until the latches lock. To return the server to the rack, press the latches and slide the server into the rack. |
