Release Notes for IP/TV Server Release 3.0

October 1999

These release notes cover information relating to the IP.TV Server Release 3.0.

Contents

These release notes summarize the following topics:

New and Changed Information

The IP/TV Viewer may be freely distributed when used in conjunction with an IP/TV 3400 Series Server, IP/TV Server or IP/TV Content Manager. The IP/TV Viewer software is included with all IP/TV 3400 Series Servers, IP/TV Server, and IP/TV Content Manager products. Technical support for the IP/TV Viewer will be covered by any service contract associated with the IP/TV 3400 Series Servers, IP/TV Server, and IP/TV Content Manager Products.

IP/TV Release 3.0 introduces the following new features:

Quality for low-end and high-end video for live and prerecorded has been improved. IP/TV extends high-quality video by including MPEG2 at full resolutions (720 x 480). Additionally, IP/TV enhances low-end quality by supporting MPEG4 for low-bitrate streams.
Quality for low-end audio has been improved with the inclusion of MP3 and Windows Media Audio support.
Management of IP/TV video services has been extended to support multiple IP/TV Server Clusters and IP/TV Viewer proximity groups. IP/TV Server Clusters allow the user to group servers based upon video content, geographical locations, or any combination thereof. IP/TV Viewer proximity groups allow the administrator of an IP/TV system to create viewer sets that pull content from specific IP/TV Server Clusters. The enhanced management features allow for flexible video service management schemes.
Data Integration has been greatly enhanced for easier delivery of nonvideo and audio data types. Web Presenter provides the ability to send information via web pages along with audio and video. IP/TV has incorporated the ability to supports Streaming Format (ASF) content, which support many features such as content markers. Content markers are used to 'mark' specific places within a stream for quick location indexing.
IP/TV has integrated Windows Media Technology (WMT) with IP/TV to provide the best of both intranet and Internet streaming video.
IP/TV client enhancements include easier to use video controls and enhanced plugin capabilities.
Relative file paths, based on the defined Server MediaRoot, are now supported for scheduled programs and recordings. There is now multihomed server support for SDP listening.

Important Notes

Live capture using the Truespeech audio format in the Beta version has been removed in this final release version.

Limitations and Restrictions

[ServerOptions]
Mpeg4CrispOn=0/1 (0 is the default)
If Mpeg4CrispOn is 0, you have no control on MPEG4 crispness. If Mpeg4CrispOn is 1, you can use "Compression Quality" in the Content Manager or configuration window for a live server to select the desired sharpness or smoothness. A value between 1 (smoothest) and 10 (sharpest) is valid.

Open Caveats for Release 3.0

Installing IP/TV server on a system previously installed with IP/TV server in demo mode will cause a uninstall error message.

The installed server will work properly despite the error message.

MPEG file recording on the live MPEG server may cause viewers to pause video when the recording session starts. If the live multicast session and the recording session starts at the same time, viewers will not experience the video pause problem.

CSCdm62508 When IP/TV Server collects attributes for MP3 Variable Bit-Rate files (VBRs) or when played back using the Microsoft Media Player, the media length and duration determined by the software is generally incorrect. It is much greater than the actual media length or duration.

CSCdm54666 Recording for a program will fail on an IP/TV Server that is also a SmallCast server multicasting the same program.

CSCdm54976 If a source program is unavailable, the recording does not produce an error.

CSCdm49884 Use matching case letters for file pathnames, embedded URLs, and HTML references when using the Web Presenter feature.

CSCdm77524 When editing existing Proxy Server field information on the Settings>Configure IPTV>Server window, you must uncheck and then recheck the Use Proxy Server option to enable the Proxy Server fields.

CSCdm34164 The Lernout and Hauspie (L&H) codec is not suitable for IP/TV streaming.

CSCdm40403 IP/TV Server does not support video only program for live MPEG streaming.

CSCdm32873 IP/TV Server uses a minimal NT services interface. It does not support a full services interface. You cannot log in and log out with continuous IP/TV service. You must manually restart IPTV Server or reboot your system.

CSCdk43488 Optibase's default audio rate of 224kps leaves too little bandwidth for video. You need to reset the local Optibase audio rate.

CSCdm10657 IP/TV Server does not support.asx files. They can only be served by WMT.

CSCdm59539 Web pages produced by PowerPoint 2000 may not be handled as a live presentation by the Web Presenter feature.

CSCdm57376 When creating a basic live capture program with an audio/video web presentation, the network is accounted for twice when two servers are selected.

CSCdm61745 Live capture in YUV9 format at certain video size resolutions for a MPEG4 streaming program causes the IP/TV Server to GPF. Please set the capture card to RGB or a different video size resolution or use a different video encoding for the program.

CSCdm65339 The default settings for the Optibase card set the video quality to Low. Consequently, IP/TV Viewer receives garbled video. You need to manually change the setting to High on the server machine.

CSCdm05917 MPEG4 live is not fully using CPU and bandwidth.

CSCdk86778 The infrastructure has inconsistent pickup of the video source from VFW capture cards.

CSCdm70116 When using other tools to create content files in the IP/TV ServerMediaRoot, the IP/TV Server may misread a file and cause OnDemand programs used by that file to fail. When using other tools to create content files, they should first be created outside of the IP/TV Server MediaRoot. When the files are ready for publishing, they may then be moved into the IP/TV Server MediaRoot.

CSCdm24319 You need to author content with a reasonable key-frame rate.

CSCdp02757 Live capture MPEG audio only programs are not be launched by the IP/TV Server.

CSCdp10099 Previous IP/TV Server releases are not detected to be still running by the IP/TV install program. Previous IP/TV Server releases must be manually exited before installing the current release.

CSCdp10107 Uninstall of a previous IP/TV Server releases may leave behind broken Start Menu shortcuts. Manually remove any broken shortcuts.

CSCdp10115 An Advanced program of live Slidecast with an audio only file may fail to serve the audio file.

CSCdp11010 A live Slidecast program shared with a Basic Media File program on the same server system may fail to launch the Slidecast stream.

CSCdm91678 Changes to the IP/TV Server's Content Manager may not be immediately picked up by the FTP Server. When making changes to the IP/TV Server's Content Manager, stop and restart the FTP Server.

CSCdp11021 Maintenance Mode allows an individual program to automatically launch when using right-click to enable the program listing.

CSCdp11894 When using the SDP Listener for the IP/TV Server's program listings, some programs may not be displayed or launched.
