Release Notes for IP/TV Content Manager Release 3.0
October 1999
These release notes cover information relating to the IP/TV Content Manager Release 3.0.
These release notes summarize the following topics:
The IP/TV Viewer may be freely distributed when used in conjunction with an IP/TV 3400 Series Server, IP/TV Server or IP/TV Content Manager. The IP/TV Viewer software is included with all IP/TV 3400 Series Servers, IP/TV Server, and IP/TV Content Manager products. Technical support for the IP/TV Viewer will be covered by any service contract associated with the IP/TV 3400 Series Servers, IP/TV Server, and IP/TV Content Manager Products.
IP/TV Release 3.0 introduces the following new features:
- Quality for low-end and high-end video for live and prerecorded has been improved. IP/TV extends high-quality video by including MPEG2 at full resolutions (720 x 480). Additionally, IP/TV enhances low-end quality by supporting MPEG4 for low-bitrate streams.
- Quality for low-end audio has been improved with the inclusion of MP3 and Windows Media Audio support.
- Management of IP/TV video services has been extended to support multiple IP/TV Server Clusters and IP/TV Viewer proximity groups. IP/TV Server Clusters allow the user to group servers based upon video content, geographical locations, or any combination thereof. IP/TV Viewer proximity groups allow the administrator of an IP/TV system to create viewer sets that pull content from specific IP/TV Server Clusters. The enhanced management features allow for flexible video service management schemes.
- Data integration enhancements
- Data Integration has been greatly enhanced for easier delivery of nonvideo and audio data types. Web Presenter provides the ability to send information via web pages along with audio and video. IP/TV has incorporated the ability to supports Streaming Format (ASF) content, which support many features such as content markers. Content markers are used to 'mark' specific places within a stream for quick location indexing.
- Windows Media Technology (WMT) integration
- IP/TV has integrated Windows Media Technology (WMT) with IP/TV to provide the best of both intranet and Internet streaming video.
- IP/TV client enhancements include easier to use video controls and enhanced plugin capabilities.
- Relative file paths, based on the defined Server MediaRoot, are now supported for scheduled programs and recordings. There is now multihomed server support for SDP listening.
When upgrading IP/TV Content Manager from Release 2.0 to 3.0, you need to manually stop the Java Web Server. The installation program prompts you to do this. To stop the Java Web Server, select the Services icon from the Control Panel icon. Then select the JavaWebServer service option and click Stop.
The Question Manager Program Selection page may have its "Select your program" field corrupted when the program name is very long.
CSCdp05718 Only live Presentation and live Slidecast streams are allowed to be shared. Sharing Presentation and Slidecast streams from files is currently not supported.
This section lists open caveats for Release 3.0
- CSCdk93072 On rare occasions, IP/TV Content Manager fails to launch because Java Web Server fails to start after reboot. Reboot again to get around this problem.
- CSCdk85658 Changing the IP address of an existing server on a DNS server may not take effect on IP/TV Content Manager. To ensure that the change takes effect, you must stop and restart the Java Web Server using the Services control panel.
- CSCdk80851 ServerWatch does not report SmallCast streams.
- CSCdm10022 Network recordings will not be considered by the IP/TV Content Manager when calculating server usage.
- CSCdm67681 Double quotes in both scheduled and on-demand program names and descriptions are displayed incorrectly.
- CSCdm49282 Sorting in the Content Manager Question Manager Moderator page is not supported.
- CSCdm83072 For features that write to the NT file system, do not use the following illegal characters for directory or file names. The illegal characters are: \/:*?"<>|
Currently, both the Recording and File Transfer pages allow you to use these characters. However, the Server will fail if these characters are used.
The following Release 2.0 caveats are resolved in Release 3.0:
- CSCpr04656 If another web server is running on port 80, an entry is now logged.
- CSCdk57880 OD Manager now redirects OD request only to good servers.
- CSCpr04583 Server is now notified when a session has been moved to another server.
- CSCpr04737 Deleting a media file from one source flags Maintenance Report.
- CSCdk40512 Added MIME type "application/x-sdp" to make setting up plugin easier.
- CSCdk43115 Program name with double quotes from MBONE SDR is now tolerated.
- CSCdk40488 IP/TV 3.0 is less dependent on DNS and Reverse DNS look up.
- CSCdk89468 You can now change the name of a server by editing the server information in the IP/TV Content Manager.
The manuals for the IP/TV 3.0 release have been reorganized as follows:
The "IP/TV Administration and Configuration Guide" includes installation, administration, and configuration information for IP/TV Content Manager and IP/TV Server. It also includes information about completing a network installation of the IP/TV Viewer.
The "IP/TV Content Manager User Guide" includes information about how to create scheduled programs, on-demand programs, and recordings. Also includes examples showing how to create these IP/TV elements within the context of a sample network environment.
The "IP/TV Viewer User Guide" includes information about how to install and use IP/TV Viewer.
The following information was NOT included in the "IP/TV Content Manager User Guide" Version 3.0:
- CSCdm40749 The Session Announcement Protocol (SAP) port is now configurable in the IP/TV Content Manager's Preferences page. In Release 2.0, the default was port 9874 (compared to the MBone standard port 9875). In Release 3.0, you can override the default. If you wish to receive MBone session announcements, set the SAP port parameter to 9875. Note that all IP/TV Content Managers in your network must have the SAP port parameter set to the same value, or they will not be able to receive one another's session announcements.
- CSCdm46868 The ServerWatch Applet does not support MBCS characters (non-ASCII inter-national characters). If an IP/TV Content Manager field contains MBCS characters, the field appears garbled in the ServerWatch Applet window.
- CSCdm40751 The Question Manager Moderator now requires that you install the Java Plug-in on the machine from which you access the Moderator. If you are running Microsoft Internet Explorer, the browser detects that the Java Plug-in is not installed and automatically initiates the installation. If you are running Netscape Navigator, you must click the link on the Question Manager Program Selection page to install the Java Plug-in.
- CSCdm40751 The Question Manager Moderator no longer supports sorting the list of questions by column headings. Questions appear in the list in the order in which they were submitted.
- The Question Manager only supports one Moderator per IP/TV program. If you attempt to moderate a program, and another browser is already connected to the Moderator for that program, you receive an error message that includes the IP address of the existing Moderator.
