These release notes for the Cisco AS5800 universal access servers describe the enhancements provided in Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a)XI1. These release notes are updated as needed.

These release notes describe the following topics:

Introduction

The Cisco AS5800 is a high-density, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and modem Wide Area Network (WAN) aggregation system that provides digital and analog call termination. It is intended to be used as a service provider dial point-of-presence (POP) or centralized enterprise dial gateway. The Cisco AS5800 consists of a dial shelf, a router shelf, and (optionally) a system controller:

The AC-input power shelf is an optional component of the Cisco AS5800 and is used to convert AC-input power into DC-output power for the DC-powered Cisco 5814 dial shelf. The AC-input power shelf contains two AC-input power supplies.

The AC-input to DC-output connection supplies -48V DC-output power to the dial shelf power entry modules (PEMs). The PEMs receive the -48V and transmit power to the filter module. Power flows through the filter module to the backplane where it is distributed to the dial shelf controller card(s) and feature cards.

The AC-input power shelf includes two 2,000 W, AC-input power supplies that plug into a common power backplane in the AC-input power shelf. A single AC-input power supply is capable of powering a fully configured Cisco 5814 dial shelf. The second power supply provides full redundancy.

Cisco AS5800/Voice Gateway

The Cisco AS5800/Voice Gateway enables highly scalable deployment of toll-quality voice and fax services over data networks. Enhanced with Cisco's IOS software and Service Node (SN) capabilities, the Cisco AS5800 supports features such as prepaid and postpaid calling card, 800 call redirect, voice activated dialing, and voice and fax mail.

The Cisco AS5800 is specifically designed to meet the demands of large service providers such as Post, Telephone, and Telegraphs (PTTs), regional bell operating companies (RBOCs), inter-exchange carriers (IXCs), and large Internet telephony service providers (ITSPs). The physical architecture of the Cisco AS5800 product enhances reliability, availability, and serviceability. Critical features to dial POP administrators include minimizing downtime, service costs, and time to deployment.

The Cisco AS5800 supports up to 1344 voice ports in a single system, thus offering the highest concentration of VoIP Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) available in a single voice gateway. The Cisco AS5800 offers breakthrough voice quality, density, and scalability, while continuing to provide the rich set of access, VoIP, and QoS services that are part of Cisco IOS software.

Cisco AS5800 Voice Feature Card

The Cisco AS5800 Voice Feature card is a full featured voice processing card that supports 192 DSP-based voice ports. Voice processing capabilities include Voice Activity Detection (VAD), comfort noise generation, adaptive jitter buffering, programmable 16 and 32 msec echo cancellation, programmable frame size, and Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) detection and generation. The Cisco AS5800 Voice Feature card offers industry-leading DSP density and a wide range of VoIP codecs, including G.711, G.729, G.729a, G.723.1, and Group III real-time fax support, on any port at any time.

Note   For those environments utilizing Interactive Voice Response Version 2.0 on Cisco VoIP gateways, and T.37 Fax Store and Forward using Voice Feature Card supporting the maximum of 120 fax store and forward sessions, the Cisco AS5300 must be equipped with 128 MB of RAM. Those environments using T.38 (up to the full 120 sessions) may use an AS5300 equipped with 64 MB of RAM.

For those environments utilizing AAA and IVR infrastructure, TCL IVR 1.0 functionality and Open Settlement Protocol, it is recommended you use Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a) for optimal performance.

NPE Support

With any Cisco AS5800 software image, the maximum hardware configuration with an NPE-200 router shelf (RS7206) is one CT3 or two T1/E1 trunk cards and five DMMs or 10 HMMs for a maximum of 28 T 1/24 E1 controllers and 720 modems.

If a larger configuration is desired, a second NPE-200 router shelf can be configured in split-shelf mode, or a single NPE-300 (RS7206 VXR).

The NPE call limitations for a Cisco AS5800/Voice Gateway are 672 data calls per NPE-200 and 1344 data calls per NPE-300.

172-port modem card requires 32M DRAM.
2144-port modem card requires 64M DRAM.

Determining the Software Version

To determine the version of Cisco IOS software running on your Cisco AS5800, log in to the Cisco AS5800 and enter the show version EXEC command:

Microcode and Modem Code Software

Microcode software images are bundled with the system software image. Bundling eliminates the need to store separate microcode images. When the router starts, the system software unpacks the microcode software bundle and loads the proper software on all the interface processor boards. Table 3 lists the current microcode versions for the Cisco AS5800.

You could have received a later version of modem code than the one bundled with the Cisco IOS software. The modem code in Flash memory is mapped to the modems. Unless you fully understand how Cisco IOS software uses modem code, it is important to keep the factory configuration.

Feature Set Tables

The Cisco IOS software is packaged in feature sets consisting of software images—depending on the platform. Each feature set contains a specific set of Cisco IOS features.

Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a)XI1 supports the same feature sets as Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3), but Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a)XI1 can include new features supported by the Cisco AS5800.


Caution Cisco IOS images with strong encryption (including, but not limited to 168-bit (3DES) data encryption feature sets) are subject to United States government export controls and have limited distribution. Strong encryption images to be installed outside the United States are likely to require an export license. Customer orders may be denied or subject to delay due to United States government regulations. When applicable, purchaser/user must obtain local import and use authorizations for all encryption strengths. The following sections list the new hardware and software features supported by the Cisco AS5800 for Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a) XI1.

New Hardware Features in Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a)XI1

There are no new hardware features in the Cisco AS5800 for Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a)XI1.

New Software Features in Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a)XI1

The following new software features are supported by the Cisco AS5800 for Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a)XI1:

Interworking Signaling Enhancements for H.323 and SIP VoIP

The Interworking Signaling Enhancements for H.323 and SIP VoIP feature enables VoIP networks to properly signal the setup and tear-down of calls when interworking with PSTN networks. These enhancements ensure that in-band tones and announcements are generated when needed so that the voice path is cut-through at the appropriate point of call setup and that early alerting (ringing) does not occur. In also supports network-side ISDN and the reducing of speech clipping.

VoIP Call Admission Control using RSVP

The VoIP Call Admission Control using RSVP feature synchronizes Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) procedures with H.323 Version 2 (Fast Connect) setup procedures to guarantee that the required Quality of Service (QoS) for VoIP calls is maintained across the IP network. Prior to Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3)XI, VoIP gateways used H.323 Version 1 (Slow Connect) procedures when initiating calls requiring bandwidth reservation. This feature, which is enabled by default, allows gateways to use H.323 Version 2 (Fast Connect) for all calls, including those requiring RSVP.

Caveats

Caveats describe unexpected behavior in Cisco IOS software releases. Severity 1 caveats are the most serious caveats; severity 2 caveats are less serious.

This section only contains open and resolved caveats for the current Cisco IOS maintenance release.

All caveats in Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a)XI1 and Cisco IOS Release 12.1 T are also in Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3) XI.

Open Caveats—Release 12.1(3a) XI1

The caveat listed in this section are open in Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a)XI1.

  A Cisco AS5800 running encryption may get tracebacks with the following error messages:
    %SYS-2-INLIST
     
    
  and
    %SYS-2-BADSHARE.
     
    
  There is no workaround.
  When an SC2200 Signalling Controller sends a Continuity Test (COT) request to a Cisco AS5800 that is part of a Signalling System 7 (SS7), voice calls do not come through.
  Workaround: Do not set a COT percentage on any SC2200 that will be servicing calls of this type. Run COT tests manually on these trunks with the test-cot command. The command can also be scripted to run automatically as a UNIX chronologically started job.
  When a Cisco AS5800 interoperates with an end-point that creates an asymmetrical codec, the system may reload during an attempt to resolve the codec mismatching.
  Workaround: Make sure that there is no condition that could create an asymmetrical codec during the logical channel opening within a normal H245 procedure.
  On a Cisco AS5800, for nextport cards a number of the port statistics in the CISCO-MODEM-MGMT-MIB might return misleading results because of the way that Service Processing Element (SPE) statistics are distributed across the ports of an SPE. There is no workaround.
  On a Cisco AS5800, H.323 calls will fail when the h245 dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF)-relay is configured on the dial-peer, and when the originating gateway (OGW) is running Cisco IOS Release 12.1(1) T or 12.1(2) T images and the terminating gateway (TGW) is running Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3)XI, 12.1(3a)XI1, or later images.
  Workaround: Configure the inband DTMF-relay on dial-peers, or use the command line interface (CLI) as described below.
  To allow the gateways in a network to be gradually upgraded to Release 12.1(3)XI, 12.1(3a)XI1, or later images, the following hidden CLI can be applied to gateways that have already been upgraded to Release 12.1(3)XI, 12.1(3a)XI1, or later images:

  After the configuration of this CLI, the initiation of h245 procedures is deferred until a "Connect" message has been received and the backward compatibility problem has been circumvented.
  The presence or absence of this command does not affect the interoperability between Release 12.1(3)XI, 12.1(3a)XI1, or later images.
  When all gateways have been upgraded to Release 12.1(3)XI, 12.1(3a)XI1, or later images, the CLI can be removed in the following way:

  On a Cisco AS5800 configured as a voice gateway, the adaptive de-jitter buffer calculates the depth too small to cope with the jitter actually seen through the network, which might result in poor voice quality. The de-jitter buffer is a buffer on the digital signal processor (DSP) that copes with variable-packet delivery so that voice samples can be played at a constant rate over the audio path.
  Workaround: Configure the following commands on all voice ports (note that the values 220 and 100 are just examples, see the paragraph below the commands):

  The values 220 ms and 100 ms were used for the maximum de-jitter buffer depth and nominal depth in this example. These values can vary depending on the actual jitter in a network.
  When a Cisco AS5800 functioning as a voice gateway receives an incoming VOIP call, the voice activity detection (VAD) property will be set based on the remote open logical channel rather than on the local configuration of the dial-peer. Therefore, the VAD's configuration of the incoming call as defined in the dial-peer has no effect.
  There is no workaround.
  If a Cisco AS5800 functioning as a voice gateway uses H225 tunneling or is configured with a DTMF digit relay for tunneling, an improper access to the internal data structure of the AS5800 might occur that might cause the system to reload.
  There is no workaround.

Closed or Resolved Caveats—Release 12.1(3a) XI1

The caveat listed in this section are closed or resolved in Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a) XI1.

  On a Cisco AS5800, the "maximum frames per packet" audio-capability value of the H.245 open logical channel (OLC) is statically defined and not dynamically updated to reflect the codec bytes configuration. The codec bytes (payload) can be configured under the dial peer and under the voice-class codec configuration.
  Another related problem on the local gateway (GW) is that the GW does not consider the remote endpoints of the "maximum frames per packet" audio-capability value of the H.245 test and control system (TCS) when the GW opens a logical channel to that remote endpoint. The local GW will open a logical channel and then transmit packets larger than the remote endpoint defined as its maximum receive-size capability.
  Finally, upon payload negotiation, the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) should indicate to transmit/receive at the dynamically determined payload size, instead of the configured bytes.
  This has been resolved in Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a) XI1.
  If a Cisco Call Manager sends a notify message without the User-to-User Information Element (UUIE) to a Cisco AS5800 functioning as a voice gateway, and the display option is enabled, the voice gateway decodes the notify message incorrectly, which might result in the call being disconnected. In addition, the voice getaway might send a status message indicating that the UUIE is missing.
  This has been resolved in Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a) XI1.
  On a Cisco AS5800 functioning as a voice gateway under a heavy workload, if the H245 control channel is opened with the keepalive option enabled on the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) socket that is being used, the call might be disconnected.
  This has been resolved in Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3a) XI1. The solution includes the disablement of the TCP keepalive option for the H245 control channel.

Cisco IOS Software Documentation Set

Documentation CD-ROM

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM is updated monthly. Therefore, it is probably more current than printed documentation. The CD-ROM package is available as a single unit or as an annual subscription.
