Gigabit Ethernet Line Card

Description

The Gigabit Ethernet line card provides Cisco 12000 series routers with an optical Ethernet interface on a single card that operates faster than 1-Gbps. The card interfaces with the switch fabric in the Cisco 12000 series router and provides one Gigabit Ethernet SC single-mode or multimode connection. This connection is concatenated, which provides for increased efficiency by eliminating the need to partition the bandwidth.

Gigabit Ethernet Command Reference

This section documents new or modified commands that support the Gigabit Ethernet line card. All other commands used with this feature are documented in the Cisco IOS Release 11.2 command references.

To use the show commands on a line card, you can use the execute-on privileged EXEC command or you can connect to the Cisco IOS image running on the line card by using the attach privileged EXEC command.

ip accounting mac-address

To enable IP accounting on a LAN interface based on the source and destination MAC address, use the ip accounting mac-address interface configuration command. To disable IP accounting based on the source and destination MAC address, use the no form of this command.

ip accounting mac-address {input | output}
no ip accounting mac-address {input | output}
Syntax Description

input

Perform accounting based on the source MAC address on received packets.

output

Perform accounting based on the destination MAC address on transmitted packets.

Usage Guidelines

This command first appeared in Cisco IOS Release 11.1 CC. It was modified for Cisco IOS Release  11.2GS.

This feature is supported on Gigabit Ethernet, FastEthernet, and FDDI interfaces and subinterfaces.

To display the MAC accounting information, use the show interface mac EXEC command.

When MAC address accounting is enabled, header compression is turned off. This is done so the MAC information can be extracted from the header. When MAC address accounting is turned off, header compression is enabled.


Note Performance on the Gigabit Ethernet line card is degraded when MAC address accounting is turned on.

The MAC address accounting feature provides accounting information for IP traffic based on the source and destination MAC address on LAN interfaces. This feature calculates the total packet and byte counts for a LAN interface that receives or sends IP packets to or from a unique MAC address. It also records a timestamp for the last packet received or sent. With this feature you can determine how much traffic is being sent to and/or received from various peers at NAPS/peering points.

Examples

The following example enables IP accounting based on the source and destination MAC address for received and transmitted packets:

loopback

To set a loopback mode for the Gigabit Ethernet line card, use the loopback interface configuration command. To remove loopback mode, use the no form of the command.

(Optional) Perform the loopback at the internal MAC controller.

external

(Optional) Perform the loopback using an external loopback connector.

To display the current mode and filter masks on the content addressable memory (CAM) hardware in the Gigabit Ethernet line card, use the show controller gigabitethernet cam privileged EXEC command.

This command was added in Cisco IOS Release 11.2 GS to support the Cisco 12000 series Gigabit Switch Routers.

The CAM hardware acts as a destination address filter. In some instances, such as when enabling IP multicast, the CAM is put in multicast promiscuous mode. A non-zero CAM mask indicates a series of contiguous entries, starting from the indicated MAC address. For example, the following shadow CAM entry indicates a range of MAC addresses from 0100.5e00.0000 to 0100.5e00.00FF inclusive:

MAC addr: 0100.5e00.0000, mask: 0000.0000.00ff

You must first use the attach privileged EXEC command to access the Cisco IOS software image on a line card before using line card-specific show commands. Alternatively, you can use the execute-on privileged EXEC command to execute a show command on a specific line card.

This command was added in Cisco IOS Release 11.2 GS to support the Cisco 12000 series Gigabit Switch Routers.

Supported GBICs include both the GBIC with serial EEPROMs and the GBIC without serial EEPROMs. When a GBIC includes a serial EEPROM, the display includes detailed information.

You must first use the attach privileged EXEC command to access the Cisco IOS software image on a line card before using line card-specific show commands. Alternatively, you can use the execute-on privileged EXEC command to execute a show command on a specific line card.

This command was added in Cisco IOS Release 11.2 GS to support the Cisco 12000 series Gigabit Switch Routers.

The MAC rewrite header table may be empty.

You must first use the attach privileged EXEC command to access the Cisco IOS software image on a line card before using line card-specific show commands. Alternatively, you can use the execute-on privileged EXEC command to execute a show command on a specific line card.

The RX GigaTranslator is hardware that sits behind the MAC controller and contains the CAM, in addition to other board-specific circuitry.

Display SOP transmit queue SRAM status.
