About This Guide

This guide describes how to use the Cisco VPN Solutions Center: MPLS Solution 1.2 software.

This chapter describes who should read this guide, how it is organized, and the document conventions used throughout this guide.

Who Should Read This Guide

This guide is designed for service provider network managers and operators who are responsible for provisioning MPLS VPNs for their customers. The network manager and operators should be familiar with the following topics:

Chapter 1

Introduction to Cisco MPLS VPN Technology

Provides an overview of the major concepts that structure the Cisco VPN Solutions Center: MPLS Solution, a network management system that defines and monitors virtual private network (VPN) services for service providers.

Chapter 2

Cisco IP Manager Administration

Provides an overview of the Cisco IP Manager software. This chapter also provides instructions on installing and starting Cisco IP Manager.

Chapter 3

Setting Up the MPLS VPN Environment

Using a tutorial approach, this chapter describes how to start the VPNSC: MPLS Solution software and then use the VPN Console to set up VPNs for provisioning.

Chapter 4

Creating and Provisioning MPLS VPNs

This chapter focuses on the procedures for creating VPNs in the VPNSC: MPLS Solution software. This chapter includes information on implementing the Management VPN technique.

Chapter 5

Defining and Deploying MPLS VPN Service Requests

Provides a detailed description of MPLS VPN service requests, as well as how to define and deploy them. This chapter also provides information about the Auditing function of the product.

Monitoring MPLS VPN Performance

Provides a tutorial on collecting VPN accounting data, monitoring service related performance, and configuring traps.

Chapter 7

Administering Customer Edge Routers

This chapter provides the fundamental concepts and considerations, as well as our recommendations, for administering customer edge routers (CEs) in a service provider environment. Before VPNSC: MPLS Solution software can be appropriately deployed to deliver services to customers, the question of whether the CEs are to be managed by the service provider or not must be answered.

Provisioning MPLS VPN Cable Services

This chapter provides an introduction an overview of the MPLS VPN cable feature and then shows how to provision cable services through VPN Solutions Center.

Chapter 9

VPNSC: MPLS Solution Troubleshooting Guide

Provides troubleshooting information in a question and answer format to help you resolve problems you may encounter when deploying MPLS VPNs.

Conventions and Terminology

This section discusses conventions and terminology used throughout this guide.

The Cisco VPN Solutions Center software supports a three-button mouse. The buttons are configured as follows:

This guide uses this terminology throughout (even though it is possible for individual users to customize their devices to use the buttons in an alternative manner).

In situations that allow more than one item to be selected from a list simultaneously, the following actions are supported:

Names of on-screen elements that you click, or select (menu names and commands, and controls such as buttons, drop-down lists, and so on) are printed in bold font.

Bold font is also used for keywords, names of commands, and names of keys on the keyboard.

Text displayed as on-screen examples is printed in courier font.

When set off from the main text, words and characters you should enter by the keyboard are printed in bold font. When the word or character string is in italics (for example, hostname), you should substitute your own character string for the example presented in the text.

For example, when you see:

  login: root

you should specify the string root at the login prompt. However, when you see:

  password: rootpassword

you should specify your own password in place of the italicized character string.

The italic style is used to emphasize words, to introduce new terms, and for titles of printed publications.

Command descriptions use the following conventions:

boldface font

Commands and keywords are in boldface.

italic font

Arguments for which you supply values are in italics.

[]

Elements in square brackets are optional.

{x | y | z}

Alternative keywords are grouped in braces and separated by vertical bars.

[x | y | z]

Optional alternative keywords are grouped in brackets and separated by vertical bars.

string

A nonquoted set of characters. Do not use quotation marks around the string or the string will include the quotation marks.

Screen examples use the following conventions:

screen font

Terminal sessions and information the system displays are in screen font.

boldface screen font

Information you must enter is in boldface screen font.

italic screen font

Arguments for which you supply values are in italic screen font.



This pointer highlights an important line of text in an example.

^

The symbol ^ represents the key labeled Control—for example, the key combination ^D in a screen display means hold down the Control key while you press the D key.

[]

Default responses to system prompts are in square brackets.

!, #

An exclamation point (!) or a pound sign (#) at the beginning of a line of code indicates a comment line.

Cisco Connection Online

Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional information and services.

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-added services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, product documentation, software updates, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.

CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously: a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the World Wide Web (WWW). The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, and Internet e-mail, and it is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.
