About This Guide

This guide describes how to install and start the Cisco VPN Solutions Center: MPLS Solution, Release 1.2 software. This chapter describes who should read this book, how it is organized, and the document conventions used throughout this book. This guide is designed for service provider network managers and operators who are responsible for provisioning MPLS VPNs for their customers.

How This Guide Is Organized

The major chapters of this guide are as follows:

Chapter 1

VPN Solutions Center: MPLS Solution Installation Requirements

Describes the system requirements for the Cisco VPNSC: MPLS Solution system, as well as the Cisco IP Manager and NetFlow Collector systems. This chapter also tells you how to mount a locally attached or remotely attached CD-ROM drive.

Chapter 2

Installing and Running Oracle for the VPNSC: MPLS Solution Software

Describes how to install and run Oracle for the VPNSC: MPLS Solution software and configure the Oracle installation for Cisco IP Manager. Oracle is a required element for maintaining the Repository and running data collection tasks.

Chapter 3

Installing and Starting Cisco IP Manager 2.0

Describes how to install and start Cisco IP Manager 2.0. This chapter also describes how to set up the CIPM workstation as a TFTP server.

Chapter 4

Installing and Starting the VPN Solutions Center Software

Describes how to install, start, and uninstall the VPNSC: MPLS Solution software.

Chapter 5

Troubleshooting the Installation

Describes how to troubleshoot the Orbix and Solaris installations, as well as a problem with Cisco IP Manager fonts.

Cisco Documentation on CD-ROM

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up to date than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. The CD-ROM package is available as a single package or as an annual subscription.

Conventions and Terminology

This section discusses conventions and terminology used throughout this book.

The Cisco VPN Solutions Center software supports a three-button mouse. The buttons are configured as follows:

This book uses this terminology throughout (even though it is possible for individual users to customize their devices to use the buttons in an alternative manner).

In situations that allow more than one item to be selected from a list simultaneously, the following actions are supported:

Names of on-screen elements that you click, or select (menu names and commands, and controls such as buttons, drop-down lists, and so on) are printed in bold font.

Bold font is also used for keywords, names of commands and menus, and names of keys on the keyboard.

Text displayed as on-screen examples is printed in courier font.

When set off from the main text, words and characters you should enter by the keyboard are printed in bold font. When the word or character string is in italics (for example, install_dir), you should substitute your own character string for the example presented in the text.

For example, when you see:

  Login as the vpnadm user

you should specify the string vpnadm at the login prompt. However, when you see:

  password: password

you should specify your own password in place of the character string password.

The italic style is used for nonprinting characters, characters you must enter that are unique for your system or network, to emphasize words, to introduce new terms, and for titles of printed publications.

Command descriptions use the following conventions:

boldface font

Commands and keywords are in boldface.

italic font

Arguments for which you supply values are in italics.

[]

Elements in square brackets are optional.

{x | y | z}

Alternative keywords are grouped in braces and separated by vertical bars.

[x | y | z]

Optional alternative keywords are grouped in brackets and separated by vertical bars.

string

A nonquoted set of characters. Do not use quotation marks around the string or the string will include the quotation marks.

Screen examples use the following conventions:

screen font

Terminal sessions and information the system displays are in screen font.

boldface screen font

Information you must enter is in boldface screen font.

italic screen font

Arguments for which you supply values are in italic screen font.

^

The symbol ^ represents the key labeled Control—for example, the key combination ^D in a screen display means hold down the Control key while you press the D key.

[]

Default responses to system prompts are in square brackets.

!, #

An exclamation point (!) or a pound sign (#) at the beginning of a line of code indicates a comment line.

Cisco Connection Online

Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional information and services. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-added services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, product documentation, software updates, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.

CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously: a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the World Wide Web (WWW). The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, and Internet e-mail, and it is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.
