Installing and Starting the VPN Solutions Center Software

Installing and Starting the VPN Solutions Center Software

This chapter describes how to install, start, and uninstall the VPN Solutions Center (VPNSC: MPLS Solution) software.

You can install the VPN Solutions Center software from a CD-ROM. For information on mounting a CD-ROM, see the "Mounting a Locally Attached CD-ROM Drive" section or the "Mounting a Remotely Attached CD-ROM Drive" section.

When the VPN Solutions Center installation is complete, the following modules are installed:

The VPNSC software includes the VPN Console and the Cisco WatchDog.

Note   The software installation works only if your system is running under Solaris 2.6.

Before You Install the VPNSC Software

Before you begin installing the VPN Solutions Center software, complete the following tasks:

    1. Install Oracle 8.0.5 and Cisco IP Manager 2.0 on the same workstation before you install the VPN Solutions Center software on its own workstation.

For instructions on these tasks, refer to "Installing and Running Oracle for the VPNSC: MPLS Solution Software," and "Installing and Starting Cisco IP Manager 2.0."

    2. If you are upgrading from a previous version of the VPN Solutions Center software, delete the existing Orbix files by executing these commands:

    cd /opt/orbixadm
    rm -rf orbix

Orbix is installed during the normal course of the VPN Solutions Center software installation process.

    3. Install the Netscape browser on the VPN Solutions Center workstation. Netscape 4.7 or later is recommended.

    4. Note the Cisco IP Manager host name. You must enter the host name during the installation procedure to indicate the location of the IP Manager Name server and the Network Element Module (NEM) server.

    5. If the installation host is part of a DNS domain, make sure to register the domain name where the software will be installed.

    6. If the installation host has a domain name, note the domain name. For more information about specifying domain names, see "On Specifying the Fully Domain-Qualified Hostname" in Chapter 2 of the Cisco VPN Solutions Center: MPLS Solution Provisioning and Operations Guide, Release 1.2.

    7. The VPNSC 1.2 installation utility prompts you for the TIBCO®/Rendezvous port number on the VPNSC workstation. Be prepared to enter a unique decimal integer. Each VPNSC installation requires a unique TIBCO/Rendezvous port number. For details on this feature, see "Part 5, Using the Event Subscription Service" in the Cisco VPN Solutions Center: MPLS Solution API Programmer Guide.

Tips You can check to see all the current application/protocol-to-port number assignments by viewing the /etc/services file on the VPNSC workstation. If the default port number of 7500 is already assigned to another application or protocol, be sure to specify an integer that is not in the services file list.

    8. Make sure you have enough disk space for the installation. See the "Operating System" section.

    9. Create user IDs for the VPNSC software and the Orbix software. See the next section for instructions.

Creating User IDs for the VPNSC and Orbix Software

The VPNSC installation utility employs user IDs to designate the owners of the VPN Solutions Center software and the Orbix software.

Using the Sun Solaris AdminTool, create two user IDs: vpnadm and orbixadm. Make sure these IDs belong to the same Primary Group.

By default, the VPN Solutions Center software is installed in the home directory specified for the vpnadm user ID. Likewise, the Orbix software is installed by default in the home directory specified for the orbixadm user ID.

The installation script vpninstall is located in the root directory. The VPN Solutions Center software is installed by default in the /opt/vpnadm directory.

The general installation instructions are displayed. Press Enter to page through them. Then the installation prompts are displayed.

Note   The complete installation for the VPN Solutions Center software and Orbix software requires 650 MB disk space.

Orbix Installation

Step 5   Orbix installation begins with the following prompt:

Are OrbixWeb 3.2 and Orbix 3.0.1 already installed? y/n [n]
Steps 11 and 12 below are not displayed in this case.

Step 6   Enter the user ID for the owner of Orbix software (orbixadm is the default).

This step assumes that you have already created the user ID for Orbix software, as described in the "Creating User IDs for the VPNSC and Orbix Software" section.

Press Enter.

Step 7   Indicate the directory for the Orbix installation.

By default, the installation utility creates a directory called orbix in the home directory of the Orbix user ID entered in the steps described in the "Creating User IDs for the VPNSC and Orbix Software" section:

/opt/orbixadm/orbix

Press Enter for the default directory, or enter a qualified path to the orbix directory.

Step 8   Confirm or change the domain name of the host machine, then press Enter.

The installation utility finds the current domain name and displays it.

Accept this domain name and proceed with the installation? y/n [y]

The installation utility pings the indicated domain to confirm connectivity.

Step 9   Enter the path for the location of the Orbix configuration files.

Press Enter for the default directory (which is now the path entered in the previous step), or enter a new path to the Orbix configuration files.

Step 10   If Orbix directories and files already exist in the Orbix directory, the installation utility asks whether you want to overwrite those directories, or specify a different user name and path for the Orbix software.

/opt/orbixadm/orbix/Orbix3
Overwrite the directory contents? y/n [n]

Setting Up the vpnadm User and Directories

Step 11   Enter the user ID for the owner of the VPN Solutions Center 1.2 software.

The default user ID for the product software is vpnadm. Press Enter.

Note   The installation directory requires a minimum of 500 MB of free disk space.

Press Enter for the default directory (/opt/vpnadm), or enter a new path for the product installation directory.

The installation utility creates a new directory named "vpn" in this path. Thus, the full directory path to the VPN Solutions Center software installation is /opt/vpnadm/vpn.

Step 13   Indicate the directory for temporary files.

This step creates a directory named tmp, if one does not yet exist.

Press Enter for the default directory (/opt/vpnadm/vpn/tmp), or enter a new path for this directory.

Note   Cisco recommends that you create the directory for temporary files on a disk with ample storage space. If you do change the location of the tmp directory, note that the tmp directory path is specified in four places in the /opt/vpnadm/vpn/etc/ csm.properties file. To make sure all temporary files are placed in one directory, be sure to update all four lines in the csm.properties file with the new path.

Setting Up the Directory for the Repository

Step 14   Enter the path for the Repository database files.

This step creates a directory named Repository, if one does not yet exist.

If the Repository does exist, the VPNSC 1.2 installation utility warns you that the Repository contains files and asks whether you want to overwrite the existing Repository. The default is to not overwrite the Repository.

Note   In most cases, it is inadvisable to overwrite the Repository, which effectively removes it from your product installation.

Overwrite the Repository directory contents? y/n [n]

Software Installation Begins

The installation of the Orbix and VPN Solutions Center software begins:

Installing Orbix software...Please stand by.
Installing VPNSC 1.2...Please stand by.
