Note The software installation works only if your system is running under Solaris 2.6. |
Before you begin installing the MPLS VPN Solution software, complete the following tasks:
![]() |
Note If you begin the installation and are informed that you need to install patches, follow the instructions in the "Installing Solaris Patches for the MPLS VPN Solution Software" section. |
To install the VPN Solutions Center: MPLS VPN Solution software, follow these steps.
The installation utility employs these user names to designate the owners of the MPLS VPN Solution software and the Orbix software respectively.
![]() |
Tips In the AdminTool's Home Directory field, be sure to specify the home directory for the vpnadm user as /opt/vpnadm and the home directory for the orbixadm user as /opt/orbixadm. |
By default, the MPLS VPN software is installed in the home directory specified for the vpnadm user. Likewise, the Orbix software is installed by default in the home directory specified for the orbixadm user.
Step 3 Insert the MPLS VPN Solution installation CD-ROM.
![]() |
Caution When you insert the CD-ROM, the File Manager is invoked automatically. Do not use the File Manager to install the product. Run the installation script from a terminal window. |
Step 4 Open a terminal window and log in as root.
![]() |
Note Make sure that root has full access to the installation directory. |
Step 5 Change directory to the cdrom directory.
cd /cdrom/cdrom0
Step 6 Execute the product installation script:
cdrom> ./vpninstall
The installation script vpninstall is located in the root directory. The MPLS VPN Solution software is installed by default in your home directory. You can change this directory during installation.
The general installation instructions are displayed. Press Enter to page through them. Then the installation prompts are displayed.

Note The complete installation for the MPLS VPN Solution software and Orbix software requires 650 MB disk space. |
Step 7 Orbix installation begins with the following prompt:
Are OrbixWeb3.2.0.4 and Orbix 3.0.1 already installed? y/n [n]
Step 8 Enter the user name for the owner of Orbix software (orbixadm is the default).
This step assumes that you have already created the user name for Orbix software, as described in Step 1 of this procedure.
Press Enter.
Step 9 Indicate the directory for the Orbix installation.
By default, the installation utility creates a directory called orbix in the home directory of the Orbix user name entered in Step 1.
/opt/orbixadm/orbix/Orbix3
Press Enter for the default directory, or enter a qualified path to the orbix directory.
Step 10 Confirm or change the domain name of the host machine, then press Enter.
The installation utility finds the current domain name and displays it.
Accept this domain name and proceed with the installation? y/n [y]
The installation utility pings the indicated domain to confirm connectivity.
Step 11 Enter the path for the location of the Orbix configuration files.
Press Enter for the default directory (which is now the path entered in the previous step), or enter a new path to the Orbix configuration files.
Step 12 If Orbix directories and files already exist in the Orbix directory, the installation utility asks whether you want to overwrite those directories, or specify a different user name and path for the Orbix software.
/opt/orbixadm/orbix/Orbix3Overwrite the directory contents? y/n [y]
Step 13 Enter the user name for the owner of the MPLS VPN Solution software.
The default user name for the product software is vpnadm. Press Enter.
Step 14 Confirm the installation directory for the MPLS VPN Solution software.
Press Enter for the default directory (opt/vpnadm), or enter a new path for the product installation directory.
The installation utility creates a new directory named "vpn" in this path. Thus, the full directory path to the MPLS VPN Solution software installation is opt/vpnadm/ vpn.
Step 15 Indicate the directory for temporary files.
This step creates a directory named tmp, if one does not yet exist.
Press Enter for the default directory (opt/vpnadm/vpn/tmp), or enter a new path for this directory.
![]() |
Note Cisco recommends that you create the directory for temporary files on a disk with ample storage space. If you do change the location of the /tmp directory, note that the /tmp directory path is specified in four places in the /opt/vpnadm/vpn/etc/ csm.properties file. To make sure all temporary files are placed in one directory, be sure to update the new path in all four lines in the csm.properties file. |
Step 16 Enter the path for the Repository database files.
This step creates a directory named Repository, if one does not yet exist.
Press Enter for the default directory (opt/vpnadm/Repository), or enter a new path for the Repository directory.
If the Repository does exist, the installation utility asks whether you want to overwrite the existing Repository. The default is to not overwrite the Repository.
![]() |
Note In most cases, it is inadvisable to overwrite the Repository, which effectively removes it from your product installation. |
Overwrite the Repository directory contents? y/n [n]
The installation of the Orbix and MPLS VPN Solution software begins.
Would you like to specify the default browser for this application? y/n [y]
Accept the default by pressing Enter.
Step 18 Enter the full path for the browser, then press Enter.
The browser path specified here is added to the vpn/etc/csm.properties file so the file can find the browser for viewing logs and reports.
Configure the application interface to Cisco IP Manager? y/n [y]
Accept the default by pressing Enter.
Step 20 For the next steps in the installation procedure, note the host name for the Cisco IP Manager Name server and the Network Element Module (NEM) server.
![]() |
Note If you do not specify the IP Manager host name in this installation sequence, you will have to manually add this information to the opt/vpnadm/vpn/etc/ csm.properties file when the installation is complete. |
Step 21 Enter the host name for the server where Cisco IP Manager is installed.
Server name:
The installation utility pings the named server in each case to test connectivity.
Server name:
Do you want to automatically copy the running configuration to the startup configuration after the product downloads configlets to routers? y/n [y]
Accept the default by pressing Enter.
Step 24 MPLS VPN Solution can send e-mail notification when a server restarts.
Would you like to specify the e-mail notification settings? y/n [y]
Step 25 Enter the host name of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) host.
Step 26 Enter the username or ID to be displayed in the From field.
The default value is the vpnadm username.
Step 27 Enter the list of e-mail addresses to be automatically notified of server restarts.
The product installation is now complete.
Note the technical support hotline number: 1-800-553-6387.
Step 28 Exit from root.
