Displaying Talker and Host Statistics

Displaying Talker and Host Statistics

The TrafficDirector application includes the following two single-segment, single-domain tools for examining your network:

You usually use a multisegment, multidomain tool to focus on the portion of your network you want to monitor, then use the single-segment, single-domain applications to focus on the portion you want to examine more closely.

The following sections describe how you can display statistics with the talker applications:

Using TopN Talkers

You can use TopN Talkers to display the most active hosts and their level of activity on a network segment.

You can start Host Zoom from within TopN Talkers to see more detailed information about the traffic to and from a single host. You can display the information in Host Zoom in graphical or tabular format.

Note To display
mappings of network-layer addresses to MAC addresses for network layer and application layer domains, you must first run the command-line utility dvntom (syntax: dvntom <agent name>) for the selected agent. This utility creates a network- to-MAC-address mapping file for the selected agent.

To start TopN Talkers, follow these steps:

Step 1 Click Traffic, Protocol, or Application from the TrafficDirector main window.

Step 2 Click Agent or Frame Relay.

Step 3 Do one of the following:

Step 4 Select the domain you want from the ones listed under the Domain Name heading.

Step 5 Click the TopN Talkers icon.

The TopN Talkers window is displayed (Figure 20-1).

The following section describes how you can use Host Zoom with TopN Talkers:

Using Host Zoom With TopN Talkers

You can start Host Zoom from the TopN Talkers window. Use Host Zoom to display more detailed information about who a particular host is having conversations with. The default display is graphical; however, you can change the display to tabular by selecting Applications > Host Zoom Text from the menu bar.

To zoom in on an agent displayed on the TopN Talkers window, click on the bar graph that represents the agent.

The Host Zoom window is displayed (Figure 20-2).

The following section describes how you can change the Host Zoom sort options:

Changing the Sort Options

The Host Zoom window for TopN Talkers displays sorts on Address Order by default for the tabular display; however, other sort options are available. To change the default sort option, select an option from the Sort menu. Table 20-1 lists the available sort options:

Using All Talkers

You can use All Talkers to display a complete list all of hosts and their activity level for a selected agent, Frame Relay agent, and domain.

You can start Host Zoom and Host History from the All Talkers window.

Note To display mappings of network-layer addresses to MAC addresses for network layer and application layer domains, you must first run the dvntom command-line utility (syntax: dvntom agent name) for the selected agent. dvntom creates a network-to-MAC-
address mapping file for the selected agent.

To start All Talkers, follow these steps:

Step 1 Click Traffic, Protocol, or Application from the TrafficDirector main window.

Step 2 Click Agent or Frame Relay.

Step 3 Do one of the following:

Step 4 Select the domain you want from the ones listed under the Domain Name heading.

Step 5 Click the All Talkers icon.

The All Talkers window is displayed (Figure 20-3).

Note When you start All Talkers for the RMON domain from anywhere within TrafficDirector on an ATM SwitchProbe device, no RMON entries will be displayed in the host list. Because the method of Ethernet-to-ATM frame conversion creates pseudo-MAC addresses that do not exist in the MAC layer, valid data displays cannot be generated.

To zoom in on an agent displayed in the All Talkers window, follow these steps:

Step 1 Select the host name you want to zoom in on.

Step 2 Select Applications > Host Zoom from the menu bar.

The Host Zoom window is displayed (Figure 20-4).

Using Host History

You can display statistics (utilization, packets, bytes, destinations, and errors) about a specific host for a selected agent and domain (in graph format) by using Host History.

To use Host History, follow these steps:

Step 1 Click Traffic, Protocol, or Application from the TrafficDirector main window.

Step 2 Click Agent or Frame Relay.

Step 3 Do one of the following:

Step 4 Select the domain you want from the ones listed under the Domain Name heading.

Step 5 Click the All Talkers icon.

The All Talkers window is displayed (Figure 20-5).
