Using Source Routing Monitor

Using Source Routing Monitor

Source Routing Monitor is a TrafficDirector application that lets you view real-time inter-ring and intra-ring traffic statistics.

The following sections describe how to use Source Routing Monitor:

Overview of Source Routing

For a single ring, Source Routing Monitor displays information about incoming and outgoing traffic, in addition to the current ring status and number. You can use this information to evaluate ring segment performance and throughput.

For more information on viewing packet and error statistics for Token Ring networks, see Chapter 16, "Monitoring Token Ring Networks."

Viewing Inter-Ring and Intra-Ring Traffic

You can use Source Routing Monitor to see a detailed summary of both traffic passing in and out of the ring, and traffic within the ring.

To use the Source Routing Monitor to view a summary of ring traffic, follow these steps:

Step 1 Click the Traffic radio button in the TrafficDirector main window.

Step 2 Select the appropriate token ring agent.

Step 3 Click the Src Route Monitor icon.

The Source Routing Monitor window is displayed (Figure 17-1).

Understanding the Source Routing Monitor Display

At the top of the Source Routing Monitor display (beneath the tool bar) is a Ring Status bar that shows information about the Ring Number and the Status of the ring. The Ring Number refers to the ring being monitored by the agent you selected when you started Source Routing Monitor.

For multiple rings in a single LAN, you should have assigned a number to each ring. Status indicates the current operational mode of the ring being monitored by the agent you selected. When the ring is operational, the following message is displayed to let you know that the ring is up and functioning properly:

Normal Operation

Beneath the Ring Status bar is a list of statistics that display either per second rates, or cumulative rates depending on the mode you selected.

Table 17-1 describes each statistic.

Table 17-1: Ring Status Bar Statistics
This Statistic... Shows You

Received on this ring

The number of packets sent from another ring to this ring.

Sent from this ring

The number of packets sent from this ring to another ring.

Passing through this ring

The number of packets travelling through this ring to another ring.

All Routes Broadcast

The number of good frames received that were All Routes Broadcast.

Single Routes

The number of good frames received that were Single Route Broadcast.

All

The total number of All Routes Broadcast, Single Routes broadcast, and Local LLC.

Local LLC

The total number of frames received that had no Routing Information Field (RIF), or had RIF fields that specified this ring's number and were not All Routes Broadcast.

Routed w/# hops

The total number of frames received whose route had the specified number of hops, were not All Route Broadcast frames, and whose source or destination is on this ring.
