Displaying Conversation Statistics

Displaying Conversation Statistics

The TrafficDirector application includes two conversation applications that let you view detailed statistical information about conversations between hosts on a segment---TopN Conversations and All Conversations.

Because these applications are designed to be started for a single agent or domain selection, you can get more detailed information about conversations on a segment.

The following sections describe how to display conversation statistics and history:

Using TopN Conversations

TopN Conversations is a real time graphical application that is started directly from the Protocol and Application modes of the TrafficDirector application. You can use TopN Conversations to display (in descending order) by name (if a host name cannot be resolved, the network address is used), for an RMON2 agent, or Agent that supports ATM RMON, the most active pairs of hosts, for a selected individual domain, all network layer domains (ALLNL), or all application layer domains (ALLAL) providing the Network or Application layer conversation group has been enabled.

By default, the window display is sorted by packets and lists the top 0 to 20 conversations. The display is refreshed automatically according to the default value established in the SwitchProbe device or Network Analysis Module.

Use TopN Conversations for the ALLNL domain or the ALLAL domain to display the top traffic generators on a selected network segment. From either of these displays, you can see the domains on which the traffic is being generated.

After you have this information, you can then run TopN Conversations for the specific domain generating a large amount of traffic to get more detailed information about the conversations. You can also start Data Capture and Conversation History to view more detailed information.

To start TopN Conversations, follow these steps:

Step 1 Click Protocol or Application from the TrafficDirector main window.

Step 2 Click Agent or Frame Relay.

Step 3 Do one of the following:

Step 4 Select a Domain Name from the ones listed under the Domain Name heading; or select a Domain Group from the Domain Group list to display additional Domain Names.

Step 5 Click the TopN Convs icon.

The TopN Conversations window for the Agent or Frame Relay and domain you selected is displayed (Figure 21-1).

The following section describes the TopN Conversations window in more detail:

Understanding the TopN Conversations Display

The TopN Conversations display is a function of the View option(s). By changing the default View option(s), you can customize the TopN Conversations display to meet your individual needs.

Table 21-1 describes the displayed information on a TopN Conversations window when you select a specific View option:

Table 21-1: TopN Conversations View Options
Choose This Option... To Display

Packet Rate

Conversation information sorted by number of packets.

Byte Rate

Conversation information sorted by number of bytes.

Rate per Second

Byte or packet rate per second for each conversation---instead of the default rate per refresh interval.

Group by Stat

A graphical view of TopN Conversations from Destination to Source and from Source to Destination, including a legend at the bottom of the display explaining each conversation.

Displaying Conversation History

To display conversation history for a specific pair of hosts including: the source and destination IP addresses, and the packet and byte rates between the hosts directly from the TopN Conversations window, follow these steps:

Step 1 Move the cursor to the pair of hosts for which you want to see the conversation history.

Step 2 Click the left mouse button.

A history window is displayed for the pair you selected (Figure 21-2).

Using All Conversations

You can use All Conversations to see detailed information about all hosts on a segment exchanging packets and to access Conversation History. You can see the utilization, packets, bytes, and error statistics related to a specific conversation between two selected hosts on a segment with Conversation History.

All Conversations also displays a list of all hosts on a segment exchanging packets. For example, if host A is exchanging packets with hosts D and G, All Conversations will display one line for the conversation between:

All Conversations displays different values in the error count column, depending on the type of domain being reported.

To start All Conversations, follow these steps:

Step 1 Click Traffic, Protocol, or Application from the TrafficDirector main window.

Step 2 Click Agent, Agent Group, or Frame Relay.

Step 3 Do one of the following:

Step 4 Select the domain you want from the ones listed under the Domain Name heading.

Step 5 Click the All Convs icon.

The All Conversations window for the selections you made is displayed (Figure 21-3).

Using Conversation History

You can use Conversation History to see (as a sliding window) real-time activity between selected hosts.

To use Conversation History, follow these steps:

Step 1 Select a Source and Destination host name pair for which you want to display Conversation History.

Step 2 Select Applications > Conversation History from the menu bar.

The Conversation History window is displayed (Figure 21-4).

The following sections provide more information about using Conversation History:

Using Conversation History From All Talkers

You can also use Conversation History from within All Talkers. When you select Applications on the menu bar of the All Talkers application, you will see a list of other applications that you can run directly from wherever you are currently running (for the agent and domain you select).

This navigational shortcut helps you find the information you need when you are using multiple applications to investigate a particular agent or device.

To use the Conversation History window, follow these steps:

Step 1 Select Applications from the menu bar.

Step 2 Select Host Zoom (if it is not already highlighted).

The Host Zoom text window is displayed.

Step 3 Select a host name from the list displayed.

Step 4 Select Applications from the menu bar.

Step 5 Select Conversation History (if it is not already highlighted).

The Conversation History window is displayed for the host name you selected.

Displaying Numeric Values

To display the numerical equivalent of a point in the graph in the bottom left corner of the history window, follow these steps:

Step 1 Move the cursor to the point in the graph for which you want to display the numeric value.

Step 2 Click the left mouse button.

The numeric value (Figure 21-5) displays in the lower left corner of the screen.
