You use the Application Response Time (ART) Monitor application to monitor application performance and response times on your network. ART Monitor helps you quickly determine which applications are overloading the network, or which applications are not responding as expected.
The following sections provide more information about using ART Monitor:
After you have enabled the ART MIB option on the SwitchProbe device, and the various ART MIB parameters have been established on the SwitchProbe device, you can start ART Monitor for a single agent, roved switch port, or specific DLCI number for a specific TCP, WWW, or SQL application.
The default ART Monitor display is in a tabular format that includes a separate line for each unique client-server interaction. The display includes Server and Client names (if a name is not available, IP addresses are used) and request/response time information in milliseconds (measured from the SwitchProbe device to the server) collected by the device including:
To start ART Monitor from the Application level of the TrafficDirector application, follow these steps:
Step 1 Click Application from the TrafficDirector main screen.
Step 2 Within the selected window, click Agent, Switch, or Frame Relay, then do one of the following.
Step 3 Select one of the following Domain Groups from the Domain Group list box:
Step 4 Select a Domain name from the Domain Name list box.
Step 5 Click the ART Monitor icon.
The ART Monitor window is displayed (Figure 27-1):

You can change the ART Monitor display using the View and Sort options to view data from a different perspective. For example, you may want to display application response time data by distribution rather than by response time details.
The following sections summarize various View and Sort options:
View options let you display various response time information by name or IP address.
To select a different view option, follow these steps:
Step 1 From the View menu, select Name or NET Address.
Step 2 Select one of the remaining options. Table 27-1 desribes the view options displayed on the ART Monitor:
| Choose This View Option... | To Display |
|---|---|
Name | Server and client host name; if a name is not available, an IP address displays. |
NET Address | Server and client IP address. |
Response Time | A single line that contains the Server/Host name/IP address, number of clients seen, and the following information (in milliseconds):
Also shows the number of retries and timeouts. |
Response Time | For each client and server interaction a Server Host name/IP address, Client Host name/IP address, and the following information (in milliseconds):
Also shows the number of retries and timeouts. |
Response Time Distribution | Server Host name/IP address, Client Host name/IP address, and response time summary information (in milliseconds) including the number of each occurrences at: < = Time 1 You must set the values for Time 1 through Time 6 in the SwitchProbe device. A value greater than Time 6 is created by the application. |
Bytes | The Server Host name/IP address, Client Host name/IP address, number of Server Bytes, number of Client Bytes, and total number of responses. |
Sort options allow you to specify how information is sorted on the display window. The Sort options that are available depend on the selections you make in the View Options menu; unavailable options are grayed out.
To use a different sort option, select one of the options displayed in the Sort menu. Table 27-2 describes the sort options displayed on the ART Monito:
| Choose This Sort Option... | To Display |
|---|---|
Server Host Address | Server IP address |
Client Host Address | Client IP address |
Response Time | Average response time |
Server Bytes | Number of server bytes |
Client Bytes | Number of client bytes |
Retries | Number of retries |
