Installing the TrafficDirector Application on Windows NT Systems

Installing the TrafficDirector Application on Windows NT Systems

This chapter describes preparing to install and installing the TrafficDirector application on a Microsoft Windows NT system. It consists of:

Product Overview

The TrafficDirector application allows you to monitor traffic and diagnose developing problems on network segments. If your network contains segments that use SwitchProbe devices, Network Analysis Modules, and switches, the TrafficDirector application will help you monitor these segments.

The TrafficDirector application lets you monitor and record information about network usage, events, and trends, and identify and isolate many fault conditions.

The TrafficDirector application consists of a centralized, SNMP-compatible network management console and data-gathering agents located at various points on a network.

You can use the TrafficDirector application to perform several basic functions:

Installation Notes

Before beginning the installation, consider the following:

Caution Cisco Systems strongly recommends that you use the default installation path of C:\TD. If you wish to override the default and install the software in a preexisting location, you should install the software in a directory subordinate to that location (for example, C:\alternate_location\TD).

Preparing to Install the TrafficDirector Application

The following sections describe prerequisites and other factors you should consider before installing the TrafficDirector application.

Web Browser Requirements

To view the online help, you must install a web browser on the Windows NT system on which the TrafficDirector software will be installed. You can use either of these browsers:

Minimum Server Requirements

The minimum server system requirements for the TrafficDirector application are shown in Table 1-1.

Table 1-1: Server System Minimum Requirements
Requirement Type Minimum Requirement

System hardware
and operating system

IBM PC-compatible with 300 MHz Pentium II; Microsoft Windows NT Server or Workstation V4.0 or higher with Winsock-compliant TCP/IP stack (V1.1 or higher) installed.

Memory (RAM)

256 MB minimum.

SVGA monitor

Resolution of 800 X 600 with 256 colors.

SQL database

  • Microsoft SQL server V6.5 or higher (required only if not using embedded SQL server for Trend Reporter application to log or retrieve data).

  • 32-bit Microsoft SQL client (installed on the same system on which you install the TrafficDirector application). This is required only if you have a Microsoft SQL server set up so you can install and use the Trend Reporter application.

Available drive space

  • For real-time monitoring---25 MB minimum.

  • For reporting---120 MB minimum.

  • Paging space equal to double the amount of memory (RAM). For example, if your system has 256 MB of RAM, you need 512 MB of paging space.

Additional software

You must install CiscoWorks2000 CD One before you install the TrafficDirector software. See Installing and Setting Up CiscoWorks2000 CD One on Windows NT.

Installing the TrafficDirector Application

Note You must install CiscoWorks2000 CD One before you can install the TrafficDirector application. For more information, see Installing and Setting Up CiscoWorks2000 CD One on Windows NT.

To run the installation program, follow these steps:

Step 1 Log in as the local administrator on the same system on which you installed CiscoWorks2000 CD One.

Step 2 Insert the TrafficDirector CD-ROM into a CD-ROM drive.

Step 3 Change to the CD-ROM drive window.

The contents of the CD-ROM are displayed.

Step 4 Double click setup.exe.

Note At the first installation window, the banner reads TrafficDirector 5.7 Setup. Although the version number does not read 5.7.2, this information is correct.

Step 5 At the Welcome window, click Next to continue.

Step 6 At the license agreement window, click Yes to continue.

Step 7 At the User Information window, enter your name and your company name.

Step 8 Click Next to continue.

Step 9 At the Select SQL Database window, select the type of SQL database you will use with the TrafficDirector application.

The default database is Microsoft SQL which requires that Microsoft SQL Server be installed on the same system or on a separate system.

Step 10 At the Select Destination Location window, do one of the following:

Caution Cisco Systems strongly recommends that you use the default installation path of C:\TD. If you wish to override the default and install the software in a preexisting location, you should install the software in a directory subordinate to that location (for example, C:\alternate_location\TD).

Step 11 Click Next to continue.

Step 12 At the Select Program Folder window, select the folder name in which you would like the TrafficDirector icons stored.

The default group name is TrafficDirector V5.7.2.

The installation begins. Progress indicators are displayed as the installation progresses.

Step 13 At the Setup Complete window, click Yes to restart your computer now, or No to restart your computer later.

Note You must restart your computer before you can run the TrafficDirector application.

Step 14 Click Finish.

Starting and Using the TrafficDirector Application

To start the TrafficDirector application, follow these steps:

For more comprehensive information, read Using the Campus TrafficDirector Application.

Shutting Down the TrafficDirector Application

When you run the TrafficDirector application, it starts the dbchkd daemon that launches all daemons responsible for logging and reporting. At regular intervals, dbchkd verifies that all logging and reporting daemons are running, and if necessary, restarts daemons that are not running, thereby ensuring the integrity of logging and reporting.

If you need to shut down the TrafficDirector application, when you close the TrafficDirector main window (using File > Exit from the menu bar), a confirmation window is displayed, asking if you want to shut down all daemons.

Do one of the following:

Additional Installation Tasks

After you have installed the TrafficDirector application, verified that you can start it on your network management station, and have configured a SQL server database for logging data for create trend reports, perform these tasks:

For more information about these tasks, see Using the Campus TrafficDirector Application.

Removing the TrafficDirector Application

To remove the TrafficDirector application, follow these steps:

Step 1 Shut down the TrafficDirector application.

Step 2 Access the program folder that contains the TrafficDirector icons (Start > Programs > TrafficDirector 5.7.2 > Uninstall TrafficDirector, or the alternate location you chose during the installation.)

Step 3 At the Confirm File Deletion window, click Yes to continue with the uninstallation procedure, or No to cancel the uninstallation procedure.

The uninstallation procedure starts.

At the Removing Programs From Your Computer window, progress indicators are displayed as the installation progresses. No user action is required.

Step 4 When the procedure completes, click OK.

Note The uninstallation procedure does not remove any files created after the TrafficDirector installation (for example, configuration files, user data, and so on). You must remove this data manually. Note, however, that this data cannot be recovered once it has been removed.
