You can start all TrafficDirector executable files and utilities directly from the command line or by including them in a UNIX script or DOS BAT file.
This section lists each executable file and utility, along with a short description. To list the arguments for an executable file or utility, enter its name at the command prompt, followed by a space, and press Enter. The TrafficDirector application lists the arguments, if any.
The following topics describe how you work with the command-line utilities:
Command-line utilities are an alternative way to start applications, graphs, daemons, and other utilities from outside the TrafficDirector graphical user interface (GUI). Most of the command-line utilities in this chapter have a direct counterpart you can use in the GUI. The functionality is the same, whether you start from the GUI or from a command-line utility.
Each utility has separate arguments. For more information about exact syntax and arguments to use with a command-line utility, see the on-line man pages. You can use the command-line utilities in many different situations.
Table E-1 lists all command-line utilities in alphabetical order.

Assigns a new monitor port on a switch for roving. Attaches or roves the monitor_port to the analyzer port on a switch. The monitor port can be either a port name or a VLAN name. The monitor_port definition should be in either the switch_name.swp file or the switch_name.vln file in the $NSHOME/usr directory. Port names should not be duplicated as VLAN names; if they are, port names take precedence. The dvattach command requires that the agent.lst and switch.lst files are present in the $NSHOME/usr directory.
Installs any domains, resource monitor variables, and/or traps found in the corresponding properties files onto the agent, switch, or Frame Relay agent. Command-line equivalent of starting the Configuration Manager (a tool bundled within rmonmgr), selecting an agent, switch, or Frame Relay agent, and clicking Install. Running dvcfg installs any domains, resource monitor variables, and/or traps found in the corresponding properties files onto the agent, switch, or Frame Relay agent. It also initiates any logging of data for this agent, switch, or Frame Relay agent.
Gets a text dump of conversation table for the specified agent, switch port, or DLCI and domain. Lists contents of the conversation table for the agent and domain you specify. Use this utility to get a full or partial list of a conversation table associated with a specific domain on an agent or Frame Relay DLCI.
Deletes some or all MIB tables from the agent you specify. By using the type argument, you can specify certain types of tables to delete. You can omit the type argument to delete all tables (doing so is the same as a soft reset on the agent). If you use this utility for a multi-interface agent, it deletes MIB tables for all interfaces, not just the interface associated with that agent name.
Captures packets in the agent associated with given filters. It can also be used to stop data capture, upload captured packets from an agent into a file, and delete a data capture in an agent.
Detaches an agent from a switch monitor port. Detaches the monitor_port from the analyzer port. The monitor port can be either a port name or a VLAN name. The monitor_port definition should be in either the switch_name.swp or switch_name.vln file in the $NSHOME/usr directory. Port names should not be duplicated as VLAN names; if they are, port names take precedence. The dvdetach command also requires the agent.lst and switch.lst files to be present in the $NSHOME/usr directory.
Gets the channel number (instance) associated with a specific domain and write the result to stdout (if the result is 0, the domain you specified is not installed). Use this utility when you need to launch non-TrafficDirector applications that might require the instance of tables associated with a specific domain.
Provides ASCII text dump of control entries related to MIB2, RMON1, enhanced RMON, and RMON2 tables found in TrafficDirector agents, switches, and Frame Relay agents. Use this utility to troubleshoot, by looking at details of the agent MIB tables or by looking at agent information, including the IP address, IFN, IFTYPE, and MAC address. If you use this utility to dump agent MIB table information, you can specify that only certain types of MIB tables are dumped, or that all MIB table types are dumped.
Gets agent event logs associated with a domain installed on a particular agent, switch port, or Frame Relay DLCI. Use this utility to dump internal agent logs of events associated with a specific domain (event logs usually correspond to alarms the agent sends when a threshold is reached or exceeded).

Lists contents of the agent history table for a specified domain. Use this utility to get a full or partial ASCII text dump of the short- and long-term history buckets associated with a generic domain or the RMON domain on an agent, switch port, or Frame Relay DLCI. You can get either long- or short-term history, and for Token Ring agents, either the default promiscuous or non-promiscuous, MAC-level history.
Lists contents of the host table for the specified agent and domain. Use this utility to get a full or partial text dump of a host table associated with a specific domain on an agent, switch port, or Frame Relay DLCI.
Learns the ports in the switch and DLCIs on Frame Relay agents. For Catalyst 5000-series switches, dvlearn also learns all the VLANs in the switch. The switch list is saved to the switch_name.swp file. The DLCI list is saved to the fragent_name.frp file. The VLAN list is saved to the switch_name.vln file. These files are stored in the $NSHOME/usr directory. The dvlearn command requires that the fragent.lst and switch.lst files be present in the $NSHOME/usr directory.
Displays a list of all domains installed on specified agent. Use this utility to display a list, including the host mode the domain uses for host and conversation tables, and the yes/no flags that indicate which tables are installed that are associated with the domain.
Displays the media independent stats in the agent.

Updates the RMON2 address map table found on RMON2 agents.
Displays the RMON2 protocol distribution counters for all protocol domains configured in the agent.
Takes the port name of a switch and returns the corresponding interface number. If a port of that name does not exist, a value of -1 is returned.
Configures or displays the serial configurations of an agent.
Sets the value of an SNMP variable you specify to an OID type (-i for integer, -s for string, -h for MAC address, and -o for object identifier) and a corresponding value. Use this utility to change the type and value of an SNMP variable. This command will fail if you specify an invalid SNMP community string.
Displays SMON statistics for VLANs in an agent.
Provides a snapshot of domain activity for a short-term period. Use this utility to display segment, host, or conversation statistics for an agent, switch port, or Frame Relay DLCI.
Converts time intervals to timestamps for use with dvreport utility. Use this utility to help generate daily, weekly, or monthly reports non-interactively. You can pass the output of dvtime as start time and end time timestamp command line arguments to the dvreport utility. The start time returned is n number of days or months prior to today's date; today's date is the end time.
Lists TopN hosts for the specified domain present on an agent, switch port, or Frame Relay DLCI.
Displays the TopN matrix conversations in the agent.
Listens for and logs SNMP trap messages. Listens and responds to agent configuration requests. Controls all logging activity log and error message redirection.
Displays Source Routing in Token Ring agent. Manages and monitors a Token Ring agent's source routing table. Use this utility to create or delete the source routing table that a Token Ring agent maintains. You can also use this utility to list the contents of the table.
Manages and monitors a Token Ring agent ring station table. Provides a method for creating or deleting the ring station table maintained by a Token Ring agent, to list status for all stations on the ring, to obtain configuration information for an individual station, or to remove a specified station from the ring. Token Ring SwitchProbe devices automatically self-configure a ring station table at power-up. You can delete this table or recreate it using the dvtrstn delete and add options.
Displays or configures the user history in the agent.
Upgrades the agent software to a new revision.
dvwalk | Displays contents of all SNMP variables defined in a MIB, starting from a variable you specify. This command will fail if the specified SNMP read community string does not match the read community string of the host on which you want to perform the MIB walk. |
Imports agent and switch definitions from the specified TrafficDirector location and merge them into the local TrafficDirector agent.lst, switch.lst, and other configuration files. Each imported agent or switch is defined as a remote agent. This means that you cannot install property files on the remote agents or switches from the local TrafficDirector installation.
Initializes AutoReporter with a default configuration and generates predefined reports on demand (Mixed Segment History, Protocol Usage, Protocol Distribution, Host Summary, Segment Summary, Segment History, DLCI Usage, and WAN Usage).
Runs the SwitchProbe upgrade utility.
Starts a separate console window to run a specified program or command. Takes as arguments the name of a command/program and its command-line arguments. The console window title displays the executed command name plus day/time.
