Installing TrafficDirector

Installing TrafficDirector

This chapter tells you how to install the TrafficDirector software. It includes

Note TrafficDirector software is provided on both CD-ROM and on multiple 3.5-inch disks.

Installation Guidelines

The following installation guidelines are designed to make sure that you are completely prepared to successfully install TrafficDirector. Each of the items in the following list indicates whether it is applicable before installation, during installation, or after installation. Make sure you read through the following list before you start installation.

Before installation Make sure that the required hardware and software are installed and configured for network management. The information in the "System and Software Configuration Requirements" section lists the minimum configuration you need for TrafficDirector.

Connect each SwitchProbe device you are using to the network, using the installation procedures described in the SwitchProbe Installation and Configuration Guide.

If you want to use Trend Reporter, make sure you have the following:

· A Microsoft SQL Server, version 6.0 or above. The basic steps for configuring the SQL Server required by the TrafficDirector Trend Reporter application are described in the "Setting Up the SQL Server and Your PC for Trend Reporter" section.

· The Microsoft SQL Server installation CD where the 16-bit SQL client installation program resides. You need to install the SQL client on the same PC where you intend to install TrafficDirector.

During installation Install the TrafficDirector software by running the install script.

If you are updating from a previous release of TrafficDirector, follow the instructions in the "Installing Updates" section.

After installation Perform any appropriate network diagnostics to ensure your network and the SwitchProbe device or other RMON agents are functioning properly.

Begin using TrafficDirector to monitor and troubleshoot your network.

Installing Updates

Software updates are supplied on the same media as the original software package. To install an update, repeat the same installation procedure described in this chapter, using the new CD or the set of 3.5-inch disks.

System and Software Configuration Requirements

The following list shows the system requirements for running the TrafficDirector software:

The installation procedure in this chapter assumes that you have already installed Windows and a TCP/IP Winsock-compliant stack on your PC. If you are planning to use the TrafficDirector Trend Reporter application, you must also make sure you have updated your system, installed the 16-bit SQL client, and supplied an SQL Server, as described in this chapter.

If You Want to Use Trend Reporter

The TrafficDirector Trend Reporter uses an SQL database to log and retrieve data. Upon installation, you can choose to install TrafficDirector:

With Trend Reporter logging enabled This option provides full logging and reporting functionality. If you plan to enable logging, you must first perform the following Step 1 and Step 2 before beginning TrafficDirector installation. Keep in mind that when you enable logging, it does not mean that the Trend Reporter reporting functions are disabled; rather, it means that you can use the Trend Reporter logging and reporting functions.
With Trend Reporter logging disabled If you choose to install TrafficDirector and disable logging, Trend Reporter cannot log data, but retains its reporting functionality--the reporting functionality is the only one you can take advantage of when you choose this option. You might choose to disable logging if you have two PCs running TrafficDirector, and you want one to report data that the other is already logging. If you plan to disable logging, you must still perform Steps 1 and 2 below before beginning TrafficDirector installation.
Without Trend Reporter functionality If you do not have an NT server available, you can still install TrafficDirector on your PC, but Trend Reporter will not be available.

If you want to work with Trend Reporter in any way--whether logging is enabled or disabled--you must perform the following steps in the order shown.

Step 1 Install the SQL client on the same PC where you plan to install TrafficDirector.

Step 2 Configure the NT server for use with Trend Reporter.

Step 3 Install TrafficDirector on your PC.

Note Steps 1 and 2 are explained further in the "
Setting Up the SQL Server and Your PC for Trend Reporter" section.

Setting Up the SQL Server and Your PC for Trend Reporter

Before installing TrafficDirector, you must do the following if you plan to use Trend Reporter:

Installing the SQL Client

Install the 16-bit SQL client on the same PC where you plan to install TrafficDirector. To do so, run the 16-bit SQL client installation program that resides on the SQL Server installation CD. Be sure to run this program with TCP/IP as the default network. Make sure that the SQL client program is in the path where you plan to install TrafficDirector.

Setting up the SQL Server

You must set up a user account on the SQL Server to give TrafficDirector access to the database.

Before You Begin

Before you begin setting up the SQL Server for TrafficDirector, please note the following:

Setting Up the SQL Server and the TrafficDirector User Account

Use the following procedure to set up the SQL Server for use with Trend Reporter.

Step 1 Create a 100-MB (recommended) device named NETSQL.

Step 2 Create a database named NSTREND_DB on device NETSQL. The size of the database must be less than the size of the device.

Step 3 Create a user group named NETSQLUSERS associated with NSTREND_DB.

Step 4 Grant the following permissions to the NETSQLUSERS group:

Step 5 Create the user account (login ID) that TrafficDirector will use to access the SQL database. You must define this login ID as a member of the NETSQLUSERS group and set the default database as NSTREND_DB. Be sure to note the following, as TrafficDirector prompts you to enter this information during installation.

TrafficDirector automatically inherits the security permissions defined for the NETSQLUSERS group. These security permissions let TrafficDirector work with the NSTREND_DB data base.

Installing TrafficDirector Software

This section describes general guidelines as well as the steps needed to install TrafficDirector.

Installing TrafficDirector from CD or Disks

Use this procedure to install TrafficDirector from the CD provided. If you plan to use Trend Reporter, configure the NT server and your PC as described in the "Setting Up the SQL Server and Your PC for Trend Reporter" section before beginning this procedure. If you use disks for installation, keep in mind that the basic procedure and input required from you is the same; the only difference is that you must put numbered disks into the 3.5 inch disk drive on your PC as prompted.

Note Before you get started, the bulleted list below describes some preinstallation tips.

Step 1 Do one of the following:

Step 2 Select Run from the Start menu, then enter D:install (using the appropriate letter for your CD-ROM drive) in the Command Line field, then click OK.

Step 3 When prompted, specify a destination path where you want the TrafficDirector software to be installed. The default destination path is c:\traffdir.

If you specify a directory that already exists, the installation program can create backup files before overwriting existing files. If you want TrafficDirector to create these backup files, simply specify to do so when prompted.

Step 4 When prompted, specify the following information needed for the Trend Reporter application. If you do not know the NT server name, SQL user name, or SQL password, contact your database administrator.

Click OK to accept the information or Cancel to install TrafficDirector without specifying the required SQL information, and then do one of the following:

Step 5 A dialog box is displayed warning you that the installation program could not create the SQL configuration Trend Reporter requires to log and retrieve data. You can choose to do one of the following:

Step 6 A window is displayed prompting you to note the following information:

Step 7 Select one of the following:

Step 8 Select the Program Manager Group where you want to put the TrafficDirector application icons.

Step 9 You are then prompted to decide whether you want the installation program to automatically add the following line to your autoexec.bat file:

where destination_path is where you installed TrafficDirector.

For example:

Choose one of the following:

  • Yes. The TrafficDirector installation program automatically adds this line to your autoexec.bat file and reboots your PC.

  • No. TrafficDirector does not automatically set the TrafficDirector path and reboot your PC. If you choose this option, you must manually add this line to your autoexec.bat file and reboot your PC before starting TrafficDirector.

Step 10 After restarting Windows, double-click the TrafficDirector licensing application icon. The licensing program prompts you to enter the following information that is on the pink or yellow password form:

  • Serial number

  • Password

  • Expiration date

Note If you do not perform this step, you will not be able to run TrafficDirector.

Step 11 To run TrafficDirector, click the TrafficDirector icon.
