This chapter explains how to install the TrafficDirector for UNIX software. It includes
The following installation guidelines are designed to make sure that you are completely prepared to successfully install TrafficDirector. Each of the items in the following list indicates whether it is applicable before installation, during installation, or after installation. Make sure you read through the following list before you start installation.
| Before installation | Make sure that the required hardware and software are installed and configured for network management. Table 1-1 in the "System Configuration Requirements" section lists the supported configurations. Connect each SwitchProbe device you are using to the network, using the installation procedures described in the SwitchProbe Installation and Configuration Guide. |
| During installation | Set up the environment variables and use the tar command to extract the program files from the CD. Install the TrafficDirector software by running the install script. When you install TrafficDirector, make sure that you do not do so as superuser (root). If you are updating from a previous release of TrafficDirector, follow the instructions in the "Installing Updates" section. |
| After installation | Perform any appropriate network diagnostics to ensure your network and the SwitchProbe device or other RMON agents are functioning properly. Begin using TrafficDirector to monitor and troubleshoot your network. |
Table 1-1 lists the system configurations supported by TrafficDirector.

Software updates are supplied on the same media as the original software package. To install an update, repeat the same installation procedure described in the "Installing TrafficDirector Software" section, using the new CD.
This section describes general guidelines as well as the steps needed to install TrafficDirector.
![]() | Caution You must install the TrafficDirector file as a user, not as a superuser. This is extremely important, as doing so avoids potential write-protection conflicts that might interfere with a nonprivileged user's ability to fully use the TrafficDirector product. |
You must install the TrafficDirector software in a directory defined by the environment variable $NSHOME. The installation procedure installs files in various subdirectories of the $NSHOME directory as described in this section. The following subdirectories are created during installation:
| $NSHOME/bin | This directory contains executables, icon files, and other permanent files. These files are overwritten when you install a new version of the software. |
| $NSHOME/man | This directory contains documentation. These files are also overwritten when you install a new version of the software. |
| $NSHOME/samples | This directory contains sample and default configuration files. These files are overwritten when you install a new version of the software. |
| $NSHOME/usr | This directory contains user-specific configuration files, the license file, and status log files created by daemon processes. These files are not overwritten when you install a new version of the software. |
| $NSHOME/reports | This directory is the default directory for report output files. |
| $NSHOME/msql | This directory contains database tables created by the snapshot daemon. |
Before installing the software, go through the following checklist to make sure that your system is prepared for the installation:
You are using C Shell when SHELL=/bin/csh is displayed on the screen. Use the procedure in the "Installing TrafficDirector Using C Shell" section.
You are using either the Bourne or Korn Shell when setenv: not found is displayed on the screen. When this is displayed, enter set at the prompt and press Enter.
You are using the Bourne Shell when SHELL=/bin/sh is displayed on the screen.Use the procedure in the "Installing TrafficDirector Using the Bourne Shell" section.
You are using the Korn Shell when SHELL=/bin/ksh is displayed on the screen. Use the procedure in the "Installing TrafficDirector Using the Korn Shell" section.
Use this procedure only if you are using the C Shell. If you are not sure what shell you are using, see the "General Installation Guidelines" section.
Step 1 Log in as a nonroot user.
Step 2 Create an installation directory for TrafficDirector as the following example shows (where install_path is a path you define):

The install program automatically runs a licensing program for you. Found in the $NSHOME/bin directory, you may need access to it later if you are using a temporary or evaluation license. The licensing program prompts you to enter the following information that is on the pink or yellow password form:
The install program also displays a list of installation steps that require root permission. These installation steps will be automatically invoked when you enter the root password for your system. Enter the password when you see the following prompt:
