Release Notes for TrafficDirector UNIX Release 4.1.3

Release Notes for TrafficDirector UNIX Release 4.1.3

January 29, 1997

Introduction

These release notes describe the features and caveats for TrafficDirector UNIX Release 4.1.3. Refer to the TrafficDirector UNIX Software Configuration Guide for detailed information.

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up to date than printed documentation. To order one or more copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. The CD-ROM package is available as a single package or as an annual subscription. You can also access Cisco documentation on the World Wide Web at http://www.cisco.com, http://www-china.cisco.com, or http://www-europe.cisco.com.

The following command line utilities provide enhanced functions:

Important Notes

This section provides compatibility, filter editing, installation, and Trend Reporter information for Release 4.1.3. The following topics are included:

Changing the Default User Datagram Protocol Port

The Trend Reporter poller requires the exclusive use of the default UDP port 3000. If UDP port 3000 is in use, you must specify an alternative port.

To specify an alternative UDP port, you must edit the MSQL_TCP_PORT variable in the .traffdir file, changing the default UDP port value to the value of an available port. See the "Setting Up Environment Variables" section in the TrafficDirector UNIX Software Configuration Guide for more information.

Note If more than one version of TrafficDirector is installed on your system, you must edit the MSQL_TCP_PORT variable that occurs in each instance of the .traffdir file.

Choosing an Installation Path

If you had installed TrafficDirector Release 3.3 as part of CiscoWorks for Switched Internetworks (CWSI) 1.x, you can overwrite it with Release 4.1.3, or you can install Release 4.1.3 in a separate directory. When Release 3.3 and Release 4.1.3 are installed in separate directories, you can run them concurrently.

To overwrite Release 3.3 in the CWSI directory, select the CWSI directory path (for example, the Solaris platform path is /opt/CSCOcv/TrafficDirector), and install Release 4.1.3.

To install Release 4.1.3 in a separate directory, select a different path, and install Release 4.1.3. After the installation, set the $NSHOME environment variable to the correct path before you run either Release 4.1.3 or Release 3.3.

Compatibility with SwitchProbe Devices

Taking full advantage of TrafficDirector Release 4.1.3 requires SwitchProbe Release 3.1.0 or later. Refer to the SwitchProbe Installation and Configuration Guide for more information.

Editing InterSwitch Link Filters

TrafficDirector Release 4.1.3 includes 11 predefined ISL filters for monitoring VLAN traffic:

You can edit these filters to monitor additional VLANs by changing the VLAN ID binary values in the VLAN (L-7Bit)+BPDU and VLAN (H-8Bit) fields in the Filter Editor window.

To edit one of the predefined ISL filters, follow this procedure:

Step 1 Determine the binary value of the VLAN ID you want to monitor:

If the VLAN ID is less than 128, determine the 7-bit value. For instance, the 7-bit value of VLAN ID 12 is 0001100.

If the VLAN ID is greater than 128, determine the high-bit (8-bit) and low-bit (7-bit) values. For instance, the high-bit and low-bit values of VLAN ID 1000 are 00000111 and 1101000, respectively.

Step 2 Launch the Filter Editor from the TrafficDirector main window.

Step 3 Select one of the ISL filters.

Step 4 Click Edit. The Edit Filter window appears and displays the filter information for the ISL filter you selected.

Step 5 Enter a new name for the ISL filter in the Filter Name field.

Step 6 Change the values in the VLAN (L-7Bit)+BPDU and VLAN (H-8Bit) fields using the values you determined in Step 1 to reflect the new VLAN ID you want to monitor. The following conditions apply:

If the VLAN ID is less than 128, enter the 7-bit value in the VLAN (L-7Bit)+BPDU field. (Ensure that the VLAN (H-8Bit) field is empty.) For instance, if the 7-bit value is 0001100, you would enter it in the VLAN (L-7Bit)+BPDU field as follows:

If the VLAN ID is greater than 128, enter the high-bit (8-bit) value in the VLAN (H-8Bit) field and the low-bit (7-bit) value in the VLAN (L-7Bit)+BPDU field.

For instance, if the high-bit value is 00000111, you would enter it in the VLAN (H-8Bit) field as follows:

If the low-bit value is 1101000, you would enter it in the VLAN (L-7Bit)+BPDU field as follows:

Step 7 Click OK to enter the changes.

Generating Reports with the Trend Reporter Reporting Daemon

If you receive the "Cannot connect to the database server" error message when viewing a report, wait 30 minutes, and try again. The Trend Reporter reporting daemon generates reports every 15 minutes. After you restart TrafficDirector, the Trend Reporter application might require one or two cycles before generating complete reports.

Installing TrafficDirector on NFS-Mounted File Systems

To function properly, certain TrafficDirector executables require remote root permissions on NFS-mounted file systems. To determine if your host has root file access, test /remote1 and /remote2 as NFS-mounted file systems:

Test 1
The following test shows that the file owner is nobody instead of root. The file system does not support remote root access. Do not install TrafficDirector on /remote1.
%su
Password:
penguin# touch /remote1/testroot
penguin# ls -l /remote1/testroot
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody 0 Oct 16 10:55 /remote1/testroot
Test 2
The following test shows that the file owner is root. The file system supports remote root access. You can install TrafficDirector on /remote2.
%su
Password:
penguin# touch /remote2/testroot
penguin# ls -l /remote2/testroot
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 0 Oct 16 10:56 /remote2/testroot

Updating the msqld File for HP/UX Version 9.04

If you are using HP/UX version 9.04 and you see the nmap:operation not supported error message, you need to update the msqld file in the $NSHOME/msql directory. You can obtain a new msqld file from the Frontier Software FTP site at ftp://ftp.frontier.com/pub/outgoing.

Viewing Switch Ports from Trap Manager

When you use the Trap Manager application with a selected switch, Trap Manager only shows the status of one switch port. To view the status of other switch ports on the switch, select the Agent option from the Scope menu, and select a switch port from the Scope Agent list.

Caveats

The following caveats describe possibly unexpected behavior by Release 4.1.3:

To work around this, either close other applications that use many colors, such as a web browser, and then relaunch TrafficDirector, or launch the other applications using private color maps.
You can work around this by creating an empty file, called pingoff, in the $NSHOME/usr. TrafficDirector looks for this file in the $NHOME/usr directory, but does not run the ping portion of the agent test function. Do not include any configuration information in the file or give it a filename extension.
To work around this, select an agent from the Agents list in the TrafficDirector main window, and then launch the application.

Cisco Connection Online

Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional information and services.
