Read this document before installing CiscoWorks for Switched Internetworks (CWSI) with Cisco Resource Manager (CRM).
Before installing CWSI with CRM, make sure that the installation requirements described in this document have been met. Also, you must install the products in the order noted so that CWSI and CRM run together successfully.
Make sure that you have met the following requirements before installing CWSI with CRM:
The order that you install the software components is critical for CWSI 2.1. Before you begin to install CWSI 2.1, perform the following steps:
Step 1 Verify that you have Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation or Server installed on your machine.
Step 2 Go to Settings\Control Panel and find the ODBC icon. If you have ODBC, proceed to Step 4.
Step 3 If you do not have ODBC, install the ODBC drivers required for CWSI, as follows:
(a) Locate your Windows NT 4.0 Server or Workstation installation disk.
(b) Insert the disk into the CD drive and click the Browse This CD button.
(c) Open the I386\INETSRV\ODBC folder and double click the Setup.exe program to run the setup program.
(d) When installing, select the SQL driver.
(e) From the Use Data Source window, click Close.
Step 4 Install CRM 1.1 using the CD provided. Follow the instructions provided in the installation booklet that accompanies the CD.
During the CRM 1.1 installation, if an error appears indicating that Microsoft IIS 2.0 is not installed, perform the following steps:
(a) Locate your Windows NT 4.0 installation CD.
(b) Browse the CD and open to the I386\INETSRV directory.
(c) Run the Inetstp.exe program. Make sure that you check all of the boxes except for the ODBC box and complete the installation. If you check the ODBC box, you will ruin your ODBC installation.
(d) Locate the Windows NT 4.0 Workstation/Server Service Pack disks and install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3. You must install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 even if you have already installed it before installing Microsoft IIS 2.0. You must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3, because installing Microsoft IIS destroys the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3. Refer to the Cisco Resource Manager 1.1 Installation Guide for Windows NT for important information about IIS and Service Pack 3 installation requirements.
(e) Reboot your system.
(f) Complete the CRM 1.1 installation, selecting the "typical" installation.
Step 5 Reboot your system.
Step 6 Install CWSI 2.1 using the CD provided. Follow the instructions provided in the CD booklet, Installing CWSI, and the installation information provided in the document Release Notes for CWSI 2.1 (Windows NT).
Step 7 Decide on a suitable seed device, as you will be prompted to enter one during CWSI installation. You may also want to decide on which CiscoView device packages you require because you will be asked to select them.
Step 8 Reboot your system.
Step 9 Wait a few minutes to allow all the CWSI processes to start. Then log in and start CWSI, UserTracking, CiscoView, AtmDirector or TrafficDirector (if you selected to install them).
While waiting for your system to reboot, read the document Release Notes for CWSI 2.1 (Windows NT) for important information and caveats about the products you intend to use.
CWSI performance is greatly affected by the performance of the virtual memory subsystem in Windows NT. Virtual memory can be optimized by having sufficient physical memory, a fast disk drive, and proper system configuration. Placing the NT swap file pagefile.sys in a small, separate FAT partition will control fragmentation of the page file. An ultra-wide SCSI drive for the partition containing pagefile.sys will visibly improve I/O performance.
If Asynchronous Network Interface (ANI) is running on an NT Server machine, it should not be used as a network file server at the same time. The NT Server default configuration is set up as a file server. To change this, open the Control Panel, and double click on the Network icon. Under Server Optimization Level, set the Maximize Throughput for Network Applications to on.
For further optimization information, refer to the release note Optimization and Tuning of Windows NT, which is located on Microsoft's online TechNet Reference Desk.
