Starting and Navigating

Starting and Navigating

You start VlanDirector from the CWSI map window. You start CWSI differently depending on whether you are using a Windows NT or a UNIX platform.

Starting CWSI on a Windows NT Platform

To start CWSI on a Windows NT platform, follow these steps:

Step 1 Select Start>Programs>CWSI 2.1>Start CWSI from the Windows NT menu bar.

The CWSI Login window opens (Figure 2-1).

Figure 2-1: CWSI Login Window

Step 2 Enter your username in the Username field.

Step 3 Enter your password in the Password field.

Step 4 To log into the default ANI server displayed in the ANI server field, click LOGIN. To log into a different ANI server, enter the name of the ANI server in the Server field.

The length of time that the discovery process takes varies depending on your network, but averages from two to seven minutes.

When the discovery process is complete, the CWSI map window opens, displaying the discovered network (Figure 2-2).

Figure 2-2: CWSI Map Window Showing Discovered Network

CWSI Map Window

The CWSI map window displays the physical state of your network, including switches, routers, and links. When used with VlanDirector, the map displays the VLAN topology in your network, including VLAN Trunk Protocol (VTP) domains and the current spanning tree configuration. The CWSI map window is a launch point for CWSI applications, and allows you display reports about your network status.

To start VlanDirector from the CWSI map window:

Click the VlanDirector icon in the toolbar or select Tools>VlanDirector from the CWSI menu bar.
The VlanDirector window opens, as shown in Figure 2-4.

When you launch VlanDirector from the CWSI map window, VlanDirector adds VLAN management and LANE management filters to the CWSI map window. These filters allow you to display additional information about a VLAN (Figure 2-3). Click the plus sign next to the light bulb to display the filters. Click the minus sign to collapse the filters.

When you click a VLAN in the Names window in the VlanDirector window, the CWSI map window is updated to reflect the devices and links that belong to the selected VLAN. The VLAN is displayed in the color you assigned when you created it.

See Chapter 6, "Displaying VLANs on the CWSI Map" for additional information about VLAN management filters in the CWSI map window and Chapter 7, "Displaying LANE Components in the CWSI Map" for additional information about LANE management filters.

Names Window

The Names window contains a toolbar for performing tasks, such as organizing and managing VLANs. The Names window also displays the names of existing folders and VLANs discovered in your network.

Names Toolbar

The toolbar provides buttons so you can perform the following tasks:

Folders

Folders contain VLANs that have been created using VlanDirector and existing VLANs discovered in your network. When you create folders, name them according to the types of VLANs in them.

A plus sign next to a folder indicates that the folder contains VLANs. A minus sign next to the folder indicates that the folder does not contain any VLANs or that the contents of the folder are currently being displayed.

A VTP domain or ATM fabric is represented by a folder. A VTP domain is made up of one or more interconnected devices that share the same VTP domain name. An ATM fabric is a group of interconnected switches that were discovered using the Interim Local Management Interface (ILMI) Neighbor discovery mechanism, starting at the seed address. The ATM fabric folders in VlanDirector contain unresolved ATM VLANs. An ATM VLAN is considered to be unresolved if it has no clients, is a stand-alone ATM VLAN, or it is an ATM VLAN with switches that do not have the proper Management Information Base (MIB) support.

VLANs

The icon next to the VLAN name indicates the type of VLAN (Figure 2-5).

Figure 2-5: VLAN Icons

The colored box next to the VLAN name indicates the color assigned to the VLAN. There are 13 standard colors, or you can create your own custom colors. See "Customizing VLAN Colors" in Chapter 3, "Configuring VLANs."

Scroll Bar

You can scroll through the list of VLANs using the scroll bar to the right of the list of VLANs.

Membership Window

The Membership window contains a toolbar across the top. The toolbar contains descriptive buttons for performing the following tasks:

When you select a VLAN in the Names window, information about the devices belonging to the VLAN is displayed in the Membership window, as follows:

You can move ports from one VLAN to another by dragging the port from the Membership window to the destination VLAN in the Names window.

Status Bar

The status bar across the bottom of the VlanDirector window displays system messages--for example, the number of domains, fabrics, and VLANs discovered.

Dragging Icons

You can easily modify VLANs by dragging the icons--for example, select a port or a VLAN icon and drag it to the target. You can drag a single icon or more than one icon simultaneously. For example, when adding a port to a VLAN, you can drag and drop a port from a CiscoView display to the VLAN name in the Names window.

You can drag and drop multiple icons of the same type. To drag and drop more than one icon--for example, multiple ports--take the following steps:

Step 1 While holding down the Shift key, click on the icons to be dragged.

Step 2 Press and hold down the left mouse button (the middle mouse button on UNIX systems) to drag the icon to the target.

When you drag an icon to a valid target, the icon displays a check mark when you have reached a valid target. When you drag an icon over an invalid target, a circle with a slash through it is displayed.

Note A valid target cannot always accept an icon. When this occurs, an error message is displayed. For example, if the VLAN Devices, Ports, or map window is displaying only one VLAN, it can accept a port from CiscoView. If it is displaying more than one VLAN, it cannot accept the port from CiscoView.

When you drag an item to the recycle can icon in the Names window, make sure that you move the arrowhead of the pointer attached to the upper-left corner of the dragged icon into the recycle bin.

Table 2-2 lists common drag-and-drop tasks.
