After using VlanDirector to create a VLAN, you can add links and ports to it. Links are connections between two devices that provide a path for traffic on that VLAN. Ports are connections to end stations.
Links on switches running VTP are automatically configured to forward packets for VLANs, so you do not have to perform any configuration in VlanDirector to make this happen.
If the Spanning-Tree Protocol is enabled, you can display the currently forwarding links and configure links to perform load-sharing across parallel links.
When you add a link to a VLAN, the link is enabled to carry packets for that VLAN. If several links between two devices are enabled to carry packets for a VLAN, the Spanning-Tree Protocol determines which link actually carries packets for that VLAN and blocks the other links for that VLAN.
To add a link to a VLAN, follow these steps:
Step 1 In the Names window (Figure 4-1), select the name of the VLAN to which you want to add links. Select only one name.
Step 2 In the CWSI Topology window (Figure 4-2), select the links you want to add to the VLAN.
Step 3 Drag the selection from the CWSI Topology window to a VLAN name in the Names window or the VLAN Devices window. As you drag, link information is displayed.
The link is now configured to carry traffic for the selected VLAN.

When you delete a link from a VLAN, it no longer carries packets for that VLAN. When you delete a link that is carrying more than one VLAN, you remove the selected VLAN from the link unless it is the default VLAN. You cannot remove the default VLAN from the link. You cannot directly delete link ports from a VLAN, but you can delete the link that uses them. If deleting a link leaves the VLAN disconnected, the CWSI topology window shows a device with no links connecting it to the other devices in the VLAN.
To delete a link, follow these steps:
Step 1 In the Names window, select the VLAN name from which you want to remove links. Select only one name.
Step 2 In the CWSI map window, select the links you want to remove.
Step 3 Drag the links to the recycle can icon in the Names window. VlanDirector prompts you to confirm that you want to delete the links. Deleted links can be restored by selecting Edit>Undo in the VlanDirector window.
The selected links are deleted from the VLAN.
You can add ports to a VLAN, move ports from one VLAN to another, and delete ports from a VLAN. You can also merge the ports from two existing VLANs in one VLAN.
You can add ports to a VLAN from the devices on the CWSI map or from CiscoView.
Step 1 From the CWSI map, select the device from which you want to add ports.
Step 2 Click the right mouse button and select Device Ports....
Step 3 Select the ports you want to add to the VLAN.
Step 4 Drag the ports to the desired VLAN in the Names window.
To add a port to a VLAN, take the following steps:
Step 1 Launch CiscoView for the device that contains the ports you want to place in the new VLAN by double-click the device in any view in which the device is displayed. You can also select Tools>CiscoView from the CWSI map window and select the device from the displayed list of devices.
Step 2 Select the port or ports you want to add to the VLAN.
Step 3 Drag the port or ports to the desired VLAN in the Names window.
You can move ports from one VLAN to another using the Membership window or the Move Ports window.
To move ports from one VLAN to another using the Membership window, follow these steps:
Step 1 In the Names window, select the VLAN from which you want to move ports.
Step 2 In the Membership window, select the ports you want to move.
Step 3 Drag the ports from the Membership window to the destination VLAN in the Names window.
The ports are removed from the source VLAN and are added to the destination VLAN.
To move ports from one VLAN to another using the Move Ports window, follow these steps:
Step 1 In the Names window, select the VLAN from which you want to move ports.
Step 2 In the Membership window, select the ports you want to move.
Step 3 Click the Move Ports icon in the Membership window. The Vlad - Move Ports window opens (Figure 4-3).
Step 4 Select the destination VLAN.
Step 5 Click Move.
The ports are removed from the source VLAN and are added to the destination VLAN.

When you delete a port from a VLAN, the port is disabled and no longer belongs to any VLAN.
To remove a port from a VLAN, follow these steps:
Step 1 In the Names window, select the name of the VLAN from which you want to delete a port or ports.
Step 2 Open the Membership window or display CiscoView for the device containing the port or ports.
Step 3 Select the port or ports you want to delete from the VLAN Ports window or from a CiscoView display of the device containing the port or ports.
Step 4 Drag the port or ports to the recycle bin in the Names window. Deletions and additions can be undone using the Undo Changes window. Click on the recycle bin to display the Undo Changes window.
Step 5 The system prompts you to confirm that you want to delete the port.
Step 6 Click OK to confirm that you want to delete the port or ports.
The port or ports are disabled and no longer belong to any VLAN.
When you merge two VLANs, you merge the ports from the two existing VLANs into one VLAN.
To merge two VLANs, take the following steps:
Step 1 Select the source VLAN from the Names window or locate the VLAN using the Find option. See "Finding VLANs in the Names Window" in Chapter 3, "Configuring VLANs."
Step 2 Drag the source VLAN name to the destination VLAN name.
The name of the merged VLAN is the name of the destination VLAN.
