Configuration Manager lets you configure agents by installing properties files on selected agents. You use Property Editor to create these files and define the properties you want to configure on the agent. You can define two sets of properties for a selected agent:
| Shared | Shared properties are defined in a shared properties file, in which you define the domains you want to install on an agent. When you define a domain, you can also choose to enable statistics, hosts, or conversations, and configure logging and alarms on the selected domain. Shared properties files can be shared among agents; you can create a single shared properties file and define the file for more than one agent. Each agent on which you install the shared properties file is configured with the same properties. You use shared properties files to easily configure all (or a subset) of your agents with consistent domain and logging definitions. |
| Custom | Custom properties are defined in a custom properties file in which you configure logging for individual DLCIs and switch ports, as well as network resources--round-trip delays and proxy SNMP. Using a custom properties file, you can define alarms on individual DLCIs and switch ports. |
You define a shared properties file for an agent when you add the agent to TrafficDirector. The shared properties file contains the monitoring configuration that you want to install on the agent and is default file. It reflects the monitoring configuration with which SwitchProbes boot. You can change the shared properties files for an agent by editing the agent configuration, defining a properties file, and then clicking Install.
When you define a new properties file for an agent or edit an existing properties file, you must reinstall the properties file on the agent for the changes to take effect. When you click Install, both the shared and custom properties files are installed on the selected agent.
To install properties on a selected agent, take the following steps:
Step 1 Launch Configuration Manager, if you have not already done so. See Chapter 4, "Configuration Manager."
Step 2 Select the radio button for the type of agent on which you want to install properties.
Step 3 Select an agent.
The name of the shared properties file currently defined for that agent is displayed in the Properties File field. The list boxes below the properties filename display the shared properties defined in the file.
Step 4 Do one of the following:
Step 5 Click Property.
The Property Editor main window opens and the properties file for the agent automatically opens.
Step 6 Edit the properties for the agent. See Chapter 8, "Property Editor."
Step 7 Exit Property Editor.
The Configuration Manager main window opens.
Step 8 Click Install to configure the agent with the new properties.
You can install all properties files defined for members of an agent group. When you select an agent group then click Install, TrafficDirector installs both the custom and shared properties files associated with each agent. This is useful if you define the same shared properties file for all members of the group. For example, you create an agent group and define the same shared properties file for all agents. If you later redefine the shared properties file, you can update all agents in the group with the new configuration by selecting the agent group then clicking Install.
To install both custom and shared properties files defined for all agents in an agent group, take the following steps:
Step 1 Launch Configuration Manager, if you have not already done so. See Chapter 4, "Configuration Manager."
Step 2 Select the AgentGroup radio button.
All agent groups are displayed in the agent group list box.
Step 3 Select the agent group with the agents on which you want to install properties.
Step 4 Click Install.
Both the shared and custom properties files associated with each agent in the group are installed.
