Use Configuration Manager to add and configure agents for network monitoring with TrafficDirector. You define and configure all agents, agent groups, switches, and Frame Relay agents using this application. Configuration Manager provides a powerful and efficient way to install domains, log traps, and resources on a variety of agents, including DLCIs and switch ports.
All agent configuration is first defined in properties files that you create using Property Editor. These files contain the monitoring configuration, or properties, you want to configure in the agent. You then use Configuration Manager to install these properties on selected agents.
Configuration Manager also provides additional support for individual DLCIs and switch ports. For DLCIs, Configuration Manager provides a name-mapping mechanism for DLCI numbers to tailor your display, and also lets you change the committed information rates (CIRs) of selected DLCIs. For switches, Configuration Manager lets you rove to specific switch ports to bring full Remote Monitoring (RMON)2/Enhanced RMON to ports of interest for detailed monitoring and analysis.
The agents you can add to your TrafficDirector management system include the following:
| Common agents
| Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, Copper Distributed Data Interface (CDDI), Fast Ethernet, and WAN agents.
|
| Switches
| TrafficDirector supports a wide variety of Catalyst switches, and treats the switch ports as an agent group, letting you monitor each switch port as an individual agent.
|
| Frame Relay agents
| Configuration Manager lets you work with the physical Frame Relay interface, as well as any permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) discovered on the selected segment. TrafficDirector treats each physical Frame Relay agent as an agent group, letting you monitor each DLCI discovered on the physical interface as an individual agent.

Figure 4-1: Configuration Manager Main Window

The Configuration Manager main window includes the following elements:
- Agent type radio buttons:
- Select Agent to add, view, or configure common agents, including Token Ring, Ethernet, FDDI, CDDI, Fast Ethernet, and WAN agents.
- Select Agent Group to add, view, or configure an agent group.
- Select Switch to add, view, or configure a switch and work with individual switch ports.
- Select Frame Relay to add, view, or configure a Frame Relay agent and work with individual DLCI interfaces.
- Agent/Switch list box:
- Select the Agent radio button to display the name and IP address of any agents you add to the TrafficDirector management station.
- Select the Agent Group radio button to display the name of any agent groups that you create.
- Select the Switch radio button to display the name and IP address of any switches that you add to the TrafficDirector management station.
- Select the Frame Relay radio button to display the name and IP address of any Frame Relay agents that you add to the TrafficDirector management station.
- Located to the right of the Agent/Switch list box are the following seven buttons:
- Select Add to add an agent, agent group, switch, or Frame Relay agent to the TrafficDirector management application, depending on the Agent type radio button you selected.
- Select Edit to edit the selected, agent group, switch, or Frame Relay agent.
- Select Delete to delete the selected agent, agent group, switch, or Frame Relay agent from TrafficDirector.
- Select Test to test the selected agent to see if it is alive and accessible on the network.
- Select Learn to let TrafficDirector "learn" the ports of the selected switch or the DLCIs on a selected Frame Relay interface.
- Select Property to launch the Property Editor and automatically load the property file defined for the selected agent for editing. If the Shared radio button is selected, Property Editor opens the shared properties file for the selected agent. If the Custom radio button is selected, Property Editor opens the custom properties file for the selected agent.
- Select Install to install both custom and shared properties on the selected agent. If you select an agent group, both custom and shared properties are reinstalled on all agents in the group. If different agents have different shared properties files, the appropriate properties file is installed.
- Port/DLCI/Agent list box in the lower left of the window:
- Select the Agent Group radio button to display the members of the selected group.
- Select the Switch radio button to display the switch ports (name, interface, port, and slot) corresponding to the selected switch.
- Select the Frame Relay radio button to display the DLCIs discovered on the selected Frame Relay agent.
- Located to the right of the Port/DLCI/Agent list box are the following three buttons:
- Select Edit to define a name for a selected DLCI interface or changes the data terminal equipment (DTE) and data communications equipment (DCE) CIR of the selected DLCI. (Can only be selected for Frame Relay agents.)
- Select Download to download new CIRs that you define (using the Edit radio button) to the agent to configure the selected DLCI interface with the new speeds. (Can only be selected for Frame Relay agents.)
- Select Rove if you defined a roving probe for the selected switch and want to rove a specific switch port to bring the full monitoring and analysis power of a SwitchProbe to the selected port. (Can only be selected for switches.)
- Located in the upper right of the window are the following radio buttons:
- Select Domain if the Shared radio button is currently selected and you want to view the complete domain configuration defined for the currently selected agent, including logging and traps configured for any domain. If the Custom radio button is selected, this button displays logging and traps configured for DLCIs and ports as defined in the custom properties file for the selected agent.
- Select RT Delay to view any round-trip delays (IP pings) and associated alarms defined in the custom properties file for the selected agent. This button can be selected only if the Custom radio button is selected.
- Select Proxy SNMP to view any proxy SNMP resources (SNMP gets) and associated alarms defined in the custom file for the selected agent.
- Properties File. Located below the Domain, RT Delay, and Proxy SNMP radio buttons, this field indicates the name of the currently displayed properties files for the selected agent. If the Shared radio button is selected, the name of the shared properties file defined for the selected agent is displayed. If the Custom radio button is selected, the name of the custom properties file defined for the selected agent is displayed. The custom properties file is automatically named after the agent.
- Shared radio button. Located to the right of the Properties File heading, this radio button lets you view the shared properties defined for the currently selected agent. If you want to edit the shared properties defined for the currently selected agent, click the Shared radio button then click Property to launch the Property Editor. Property Editor automatically loads the shared properties file defined for the selected agent.
- Custom radio button. Located to the right of the Shared radio button, lets you view the custom properties installed on the selected agent. If you want to edit the custom properties defined for the currently selected agent, click the Custom radio button then click Property to launch the Property Editor. Property Editor automatically loads the custom properties file defined for the selected agent.
- Domain/Resource list box. Located in the upper right of the window and directly below the Properties File heading:
- If the Domain and Shared radio buttons are selected, displays the domain configuration defined in the shared properties file for the selected agent. For each domain, the following information is displayed: domain name, statistical groups enabled (Statistics, Hosts, or Conversations), short-term and long-term history buckets and intervals, and the logging enabled for each statistical group.
- If the Domain and Custom radio buttons are selected, displays the logging configured for individual ports or DLCIs on the selected switch or Frame Relay interface.
- If the RT Delay and Custom radio buttons are selected, displays the round-trip delays (Host, Interval, and Logging) configured in the custom properties file for the selected agent.
- If the Proxy SNMP and Custom radio buttons are selected, displays the proxy SNMP resources (Host, Interval, and MIB) defined in the custom properties file for the selected agent.
