Launching TrafficDirector

Launching TrafficDirector

You start TrafficDirector from the CWSI map window.

Starting CWSI on a Windows NT Platform

To start CWSI on a Windows NT platform, follow these steps:

Step 1 Select Start>Programs>CWSI 2.0>Start CWSI from the Windows NT menu bar.

The CWSI Login window opens.

Step 2 Enter your username in the Username field.

Step 3 Enter your password in the Password field.

Step 4 To log into the default ANI server displayed in the ANI server field, click LOGIN. To log into a different ANI server, enter the name of the ANI server in the Server field.

The length of time that the discovery process takes varies depending on your network, but averages from two to seven minutes.

When the discovery process is complete, the CWSI map window opens, displaying the discovered network.

Launching TrafficDirector

To start TrafficDirector from the CWSI map window, take the following steps:

Step 1 Click the TrafficDirector icon on the toolbar or select Tools>TrafficDirector from the CWSI menu bar.

The TrafficDirector main window (Figure 2-1) opens.

Launching TrafficDirector Applications

TrafficDirector consists of applications that you can launch to monitor and manage your network. You can launch some applications for agents, groups, switches, and Frame Relay agents; other applications might require you to select just one element (such as one agent in a group, or one Frame Relay data-link connection identifier [DLCI]).

Click the Traffic icon to display the TrafficDirector applications available for your network traffic.

Launching Applications From the TrafficDirector Main Window

Table 2-1 lists the applications you can launch from the TrafficDirector main window.

Launching from Within Other Applications

When you select Applications on the menu bar of any TrafficDirector application, a list of applications that you can launch directly from the application you are running is displayed for the agent and domain you specify. You can also use this shortcut if you are using multiple applications to investigate a particular network segment. To launch another application from within a TrafficDirector application, take the following steps:

Step 1 Select Applications.

Step 2 Select the application that you want to launch, if it is not already highlighted.

The Launch Application window opens (Figure 2-2). The application you selected is highlighted.

Step 3 Select the agent, agent group, switch, switch port, or Frame Relay agent and DLCI for which you want to launch the application.

Step 4 Click Launch.

The selected application starts up.

Using Multiple Windows

You can open multiple TrafficDirector applications or multiple windows in the same application at the same time. However, each window has an independent sample rate (30 seconds, 1 minute, and so forth), and updates can be different in different windows. You can monitor the same data with two versions of the same window, and the data may be different. Opening multiple windows uses extra network resources. Open only the windows you need.

Changing Application Refresh Rates

The Refresh rate is the amount of time that TrafficDirector waits before automatically updating the information displayed in illustration and table application windows. Depending on the application, you can define a refresh rate from fifteen seconds to five minutes. To select an automatic refresh rate, take the following steps:

Step 1 Select Refresh from the menu bar.

Step 2 Select the refresh rate you want.

You can manually update the information that is displayed in one of the following ways:

Printing Illustrations and Tables

To print an illustration or table from an application window, take the following steps:

Step 1 When the illustration or table you want to print is displayed, select File>Print or press Ctrl-P.

The Printing Options dialog box opens (Figure 2-3).
