Administration tasks are displayed when you select the Admin button in the TrafficDirector main window. An administration task can be any task you need to perform before you or can monitor activity on a network segment. The following are the administration tasks:
- Configuring agents, switches, and Frame Relay agents. See Chapter 4, "Configuration Manager," for more information.
- Configuring properties. Use the Property Editor application to configure shared files that can be applied to several agents or agent groups, and custom files that contain special parameters that can be applied to only a select number of agents. See Chapter 37, "Configuring Alarms."
- Configuring remote servers. To enable distributed reporting, you must use the Configure Servers application to first define any remote logging servers.
- Setting data aging parameters. Use the Config Rollup application to define how long information is stored in the database before it is automatically deleted.
- Configuring remote agents. Using the Remote Login application, you can log directly into a probe to perform software upgrades, change read and write community strings, and make other configuration modifications.
- Creating and customizing filters. For information about using the TrafficDirector Filter Editor application, see Chapter 13, "Setting Up Filters."
- Defining domains. For information about using the TrafficDirector Domain Editor application, see Chapter 15, "Customizing Domains."
Other important configuration tasks include the following:
You can use Resource Monitor to efficiently monitor the resources of any SNMP device. The TrafficDirector console downloads MIB variables selected from a list to the agent, creating proxy resources at the agent (Figure 3-1). Instead of polling from the management console, the agent polls each resource at a selected interval and records the result. You can select either an SNMP get or an IP ping resource.

You can also set alarms in the agent and be notified when any variable reaches a predetermined value. The agent notifies the management console only when an alarm condition sets off a trap, eliminating continuous polling (Figure 3-2).
