Use Application Monitor to view application-level protocol activity on a network segment for multiple domains in a specified agent, agent group, or Frame Relay agent.
Application Monitor displays activity by converting raw network data gathered by agents into graphs you can manipulate to see different views of the same data. With Application Monitor, you can simultaneously display-application level protocol activity for a number of selected agents, giving you a quick comparison of multiple network segments.
With Application Monitor, you can learn which application-level protocols are in use, which ones are being used the most, and how much of the available bandwidth is being used by each. You can then launch additional TrafficDirector applications to examine suspect areas, or simply monitor certain aspects of your network in greater detail.
Application Monitor lets you simultaneously monitor application-level protocols for multiple sites in a selected domain. You can see selected statistics, such as utilization, byte rate, and packet rate that make up your network traffic.
The default Application Monitor display is a 3-D vertical bar graph. You can change this display by selecting an option from the Format menu. You can display a 2-D or 3-D horizontal bar graph, 2-D vertical bar graph, or pie chart.
You can view a bar graph in inverted form by selecting Format>Horizontal Bar. This inverts the axes of the two 2-D and 3-D bar graph displays. Depending on the data you are displaying, you may choose to switch the x and y axes as a matter of viewing preference. Inverting the graph may provide a clearer picture of the data and devices you are monitoring.
In any 3-D graph, such as a bar graph or pie chart, you can manipulate the elevation, depth, and angle of the displayed graph with the mouse. You can increase or decrease the three-dimensional effect of the graph according to your preference.
To manipulate the displayed 3-D graph, take the following steps:
Step 1 Move the cursor to a free space in the window of the three-dimensional graph you want to manipulate.
Step 2 Do one of the following:
Step 3 Drag the cursor to change the 3-D effect of the graph. When the graphic is positioned the way you want it, release the mouse buttons.
Although Application Monitor lets you monitor several applications at a time, you can only monitor one statistic (utilization, kilobyte rate, packet rate) at a time. You can, however, display several different Application Monitor windows and select different statistics to monitor for each. Each window you open uses additional system resources.
To launch Application Monitor from TrafficDirector, take the following steps:
Step 1 Select the Agent, AgentGroup, or FrameRelay radio button from the main window, then do one of the following:
Step 2 Select a domain group name from the Domain Group list.
Step 3 Click the Application Monitor icon.
The TrafficDirector Application Monitor window (Figure 35-1) with the protocols for the selected domain group opens.

You can begin to monitor your network from this window in terms of protocol makeup and behavior.
The Application Monitor window displays Utilization by default (Figure 35-2). This display shows, for the selected domain group, the utilization of the segment as a percentage of the total. To change the viewing option, select an option from the View menu. For example, you can select Packet Rate View (Figure 35-3). Table 35-1 lists the available options.
| Option | Display |
| Utilization | Utilization of the segment as a percentage of the total (Figure 35-1). |
| KByte Rate | Kilobyte rate per second (Figure 35-2). |
| Packet Rate | Packet rate per second (Figure 35-3). |
| Agent Info | Detailed system and interface information about an agent. |

The Application Monitor window shows a 3-D vertical bar graph by default; however, you can choose to display information in a variety of different formats. To change the display, select an option from the Format menu. Table 35-2 lists the available options.
| Option | Display |
| 3-D Bar | Three-dimensional vertical bar graph |
| 2-D Bar | Two-dimensional vertical bar graph |
| Pie | Pie chart |
| Horizontal Bar | Two- or three-dimensional horizontal bar graph |
