Displaying Talker Statistics

Displaying Talker Statistics

TrafficDirector includes two single-segment, single-domain applications:

Typically, you use a multisegment, multidomain tool to focus on the portion of your network you want to monitor, then use the single-segment, single-domain applications to focus on the portion you want to examine more closely.

Using TopN Talkers

The TopN Talkers window (available in 3-D graphic view only) is a generic graphic that includes all entities that are talking on a network segment. You can launch the TopN Talkers application in the following ways:

Launching from the TrafficDirector Main Window

To launch TopN Talkers directly from the Traffic, Protocol, or Application level of the TrafficDirector main window, take the following steps:

Step 1 Select the Traffic, Protocol, or Application radio button to display the corresponding level of the TrafficDirector main window application area.

Step 2 Select the Agent, Switch Port With Routing Agent, or FrameRelay radio button, then do one of the following:

Step 3 Select the domain from the Domain Name list.

Step 4 Click the TopN Talkers icon.

The TrafficDirector TopN Talkers window (Figure 25-1) opens.

Changing the Sort Options

The TopN Talkers window sorts on Bytes Out by default; however, other sort options are available. To change the default sort option, select an option from the Sort menu. Table 25-1 shows the available options.

Table  25-1: TopN Talkers Sort Options
Option Sorts By
Packets In Number of packets inbound to the host since the last sample
Packets Out Number of packets outbound from the host since the last sample
Bytes In Number of bytes inbound to the host since the last sample
Broadcasts Out Number of broadcasts outbound from the host since the last sample
Multicasts Out Number of multicasts outbound from the host since the last sample
Errors Out Number of errors in outbound transmissions from the host since the last sample
Non Unicast Out Number of nonunicast packets outbound from the host (may be dimmed depending on your domain selection)

Using All Talkers

The All Talkers application displays a complete list of the hosts and host activity that the selected agent detects for a domain. You can specify how the list is sorted by selecting one of the statistical values from the Sort menu. You can also view displays in different ways by selecting items from the View menu. Use All Talkers to verify the number of hosts in a domain or determine whether a specific host is included in that domain.

Only a tabular view is available. You can also select Applications>TopN Talkers from All Talkers to display the TopN Talkers graph. You can select a host for a domain and view various statistics by selecting Applications>Host Zoom from All Talkers. Or, you can view history information for a host by selecting Applications>Host History. The statistics you can display vary, depending on the application you select, the network, and the agent type.

Note If the Host>Group option is not enabled for the agent and domain combination you select, you will see the error message "Error: Entry or Group not present in Agent Error accessing agent, domain, while uploading Host Table." If this happens, use the Configuration Manager to edit the domain to enable both hosts and conversations.

You can launch the All Talkers application in the following ways:

The Talkers window (Figure 25-2) opens.

Multicast Cumulative number of multicasts outbound from the host.
Broadcasts Cumulative number of broadcasts outbound from the host.
Nonunicasts Cumulative number of nonunicasts inbound outbound from the host.
Errors Cumulative number of errors in outbound transmissions from the host.

Changing the Viewing Option

The All Talkers window default viewing option is All Counters, Resolve Name. For the selected domain, this option shows host names in alphabetical order, and counters for packets in/out, bytes in/out and NUcst. To change the viewing option, select an option from the View menu. Table 25-3 lists the available options.

Option Displays
Packets The number of packets sent to and from the host
Bytes The number of bytes sent to and from the host
Show MAC address For the selected domain, the counters for packets in/out, bytes in/out, and NUcst

Note To display the mappings of network layer addresses to MAC addresses for network layer and application layer domains, you must first run the command line utility dvntom (syntax: dvntom agent name) for the selected agent. This utility creates a network-to-MAC address mapping file for the selected agent.
