Protocol Zoom

Protocol Zoom

The Protocol Zoom application lets you see, in more detail, protocol information collected by a specific agent. Typically, you would first use a multisegment, multidomain tool (such as Protocol Monitor) to get a general idea of a segment of your network you want to monitor, then use the single-agent, multidomain Protocol Zoom application to focus on the segment you want to examine more closely.

Protocol Zoom is a display tool. You can change how the protocol information is displayed (for example, pie chart or 2-D bar chart) but you cannot change any of the information in the display. You can also launch other applications directly from Protocol Zoom, making it easier to monitor your network.

Before You Begin

To begin working with Protocol Zoom, you should must be logged in to TrafficDirector with the TrafficDirector main window open. See Chapter 2, "Launching TrafficDirector."

Displaying Protocol Zoom Information

Use Protocol Zoom application to display, at any time, more in-depth information than Protocol Monitor about one or more protocols used on a specific segment of your network. With Protocol Zoom, you can get a better idea of how different components in a protocol family (children and grandchildren) are being used on a selected segment.

To display Protocol Zoom information, take the following steps:

Step 1 Select the Agent, Switch, or FrameRelay radio button.

Step 2 Do one of the following:

Step 3 Select a domain name from the Domain Name list. If you do not select a domain name, the default domain RMON.

Step 4 Click the Protocol Zoom icon.

The TrafficDirector Protocol Zoom window (Figure 33-1) opens.

Protocol Zoom Window

The Protocol Zoom window (Figure 33-1) has two areas:

Children area Displays the selected statistics for the children of the domain (protocol) for which Protocol Zoom was launched (children of the parent domain).
Grandchildren area Displays the selected statistics in terms of the children of the protocols displayed in the children area (grandchildren of the parent domain).

By default, the information displayed in the Grandchildren area corresponds to the first protocol on the graph in the Children area. To see information in the Grandchildren area for a different protocol, click the box to the left of the protocol name, or directly on the graph. The Grandchildren will refresh to show the Grandchildren that correspond to the selected protocol. If Grandchildren are not defined for a particular protocol, the message "Cannot zoom-in" is displayed.

Changing the Display Options

By default, the Protocol Zoom window shows utilization and the agent name; however, other display options are available (Figure 33-2 through Figure 33-5). To select a different viewing option, select an option from the View menu (Table 33-1).

Packet Rate Packets per second (Figure 33-3).
Show Agent Name Agent name at the bottom of each graph (Figure 33-4).
Show Agent Address IP address of the agent at the bottom of each graph (Figure 33-5).

Changing Format Options

By default, the Protocol Zoom window shows a 3-D vertical bar graph; however, you can change the format of the information displayed. When you select a format option, the graph changes to show the information differently. To select a format option, select an option from the Format menu. Table 33-2 lists the available options.
