Source Routing Monitor

Source Routing Monitor

Source Routing Monitor lets you view real-time inter-ring and intra-ring traffic statistics. For a single ring, Source Routing Monitor displays information about incoming and outgoing traffic, in addition to the current ring status and number. You can use this information to evaluate ring segment performance and throughput.

Before You Begin

To begin working with Source Routing Monitor, you must be logged in to the network management console where TrafficDirector is installed, and have the TrafficDirector main window open. Select the Traffic radio button to display all the TrafficDirector applications that are related to the network traffic level. See Chapter 1, "Overview."

Displaying Inter-Ring and Intra-Ring Traffic

You can use Source Routing Monitor to see a detailed summary of traffic passing in and out of the ring, as well as traffic within the ring. To view a summary of ring traffic, take the following steps:

Step 1 Select a Token Ring agent from the TrafficDirector main window.

Step 2 Click the Src Route Monitor icon.

The TrafficDirector Source Routing Monitor application window opens (Figure 22-1).

Understanding the Source Routing Monitor Display

At the top of the Source Routing Monitor display, just under the toolbar is the Ring Status bar with information about the ring number, and the status of the ring. The ring number refers to the ring being monitored by the agent you selected when you launched Source Routing Monitor. Status indicates the current operational mode of the ring being monitored by the agent you selected. When the ring is operational, "Normal Operation" is displayed to indicate that the ring is up and working properly.

Changing the Source Routing Monitor Display Mode

Below the Ring Status bar is a list of statistics that show either per-second rates, or cumulative rates depending on the mode you select. To change modes, select Mode, then highlight the mode you want. Per-second mode updates Source Routing information on a per-second basis, or routing statistics for a period of one second. Cumulative mode shows the total accumulated real-time statistics for the ring.

Table 22-1 describes each of the statistics available in Source Routing Monitor.

Table  22-1: Source Routing Monitor Statistics
Statistic Description
Received on this ring Number of packets sent from another ring into this ring
Sent from this ring Number of packets sent from this ring to another ring
Passing through this ring Number of packets travelling through this ring to another ring
All Routes Broadcast Number of good frames received that were All Routes Broadcast
Single Routes Number of good frames received that were Single Route Broadcast
All Total number of All Routes Broadcast, Single Route broadcast, and local LLC1
Local LLC Total number of frames received that had no Routing Information Field (RIF), or had RIF fields that specified this ring's number and were not All Routes Broadcast
Routed w/# hops Total number of frames received whose route had the specified number of hops, were not All Route Broadcast frames, and whose source or destination is on this ring

1 LLC = logical link control.
