Overview

CiscoWorks for Switched Internetworks (CWSI) is a suite of network management applications. CWSI applications enable you to configure, monitor, and manage a switched internetwork. CWSI includes the following applications:

Use this publication for information about getting started with CWSI. For information about the other CWSI applications refer to the following:

Note To install CWSI, refer to the CD booklet Installing CWSI in the CD-ROM package.

The CWSI Network Map

When you first start the CWSI application, it discovers your network and creates a network map, which allows you to view the topological layout of your network. From this network map, you can display large networks, understand how devices and links are located in relation to each other, highlight specific devices or links on your network, and launch other CWSI applications to perform specific management tasks, such as VLAN configuration and traffic monitoring.

The CWSI applications can be launched from the CWSI Map window Tools menu. Table 1-1 describes the CWSI applications.

Table  1-1: CWSI Applications
CWSI Feature What It Does
Network Map Provides a map of the physical devices and links in your discovered network. It allows you to locate a specific device or link in the network, view and understand how the devices are linked together. It also allows you to view the virtual topology of your virtual LAN (VLAN) configuration in relation to the physical topology.
VlanDirector VlanDirector is a VLAN configuration and management tool that enables you to display, configure, modify, and manage VLANs. It also allows you to display reports on VLAN status and membership.
UserTracking UserTracking simplifies moves within VLANs and tracks mover and end user information. It provides information about end stations and user IDs easily, and enables you to verify and look up end station changes in the UserTracking database.

If an end station is moved and plugged into another port, UserTracking provides configuration information from the Media Access Control (MAC)-VLAN mapping that allows the device to remain on the same VLAN as before without manual reconfiguration.

CiscoView CiscoView displays a graphical representation of a device and allows you to configure and monitor device chassis, port, and interface information. It also provides color-coded indicators to monitor port status.
TrafficDirector TrafficDirector provides Remote Monitoring (RMON) and protocol analysis, and troubleshooting of protocol-related problems.
AtmDirector AtmDirector discovers Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switches, physical links, permanent and switched virtual circuits. It provides performance monitoring of ATM switches and links within the ATM network, and traffic analysis of RMON enabled ATM links. It also enables you to display and monitor ATM-VLANs and Private Network-to-Network Interface (PNNI) components and their status in the network.

Using CWSI Management Tools Together

Although the CWSI applications have specific functions, you need to combine tools to perform some management tasks. For example, to configure LAN Emulation (LANE) services, use the CWSI network map and VlanDirector and then AtmDirector to display and monitor LANE information in an ATM fabric.

Table 1-2 provides a list of common management tasks and how to perform them using the CWSI applications.

Online Help

The CWSI online help system provides task-oriented help on each CWSI feature or tool, and context-sensitive online help that is available from every window that contains a Help button.

The help system includes an index and organizes information the same way as the CWSI documentation set so that you need only once learn where to find a specific piece of information. In addition, the help system includes a link to the CWSI documentation set on Cisco Connection Online.

Table 1-3 lists the various ways you can get online help.

Table  1-3: Using Online Help
To Get Help On: Do This:
How to start working with CWSI From theCWSI Map window select Help>Getting Started
A CWSI tool or feature, such as AtmDirector From the AtmDirector main window, select Help>Using AtmDirector.
Context-sensitive help on a window Click the Help button in that window.
Context-sensitive help on an error message Click the Help button in that error message display.
A specific topic within an application From the application or tool main window, select Help>Index and search for the topic.
