Installing CWSI

CiscoWorks for Switched Internetworks (CWSI) is a suite of network management applications that enable you to configure, monitor, and manage a switched internetwork. CWSI includes the following applications:

For information about getting started with CWSI and the other CWSI applications refer to the following:

System and Network Requirements

Before you install CWSI, make sure your system has enough disk space and meets the requirements listed in Table 1.

CWSI System Requirements
Hardware 133-MHz Pentium or greater

17-inch SVGA color monitor

CD-ROM drive

Operating System Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
Available Disk Space 200 MB
RAM 64 MB of memory will be adequate for networks of up to 100 devices. Larger networks may require additional RAM for adequate performance.

For example, if a network contains 100 switches with 3 modules per switch and 500 virtual LANs (VLANs), you would use the following formula to calculate the space required:

400 KB + (100 x 5 KB) + (300 x 20 KB) + (500 x 2 KB) = 7900 KB

Preparing to Install CWSI

If you have an earlier version of CWSI installed, you need to remove it before installing this version of CWSI. Refer to the CWSI release note for information about uninstalling previous versions of CWSI.

TrafficDirector has a utility called TrendReporter. In order to use this utility, a SQL server version 6.0 or later must be installed and configured to work in conjunction with TrafficDirector. For information about installing and configuring a SQL server see Chapter 39, "Configuring SQL Servers," in Using TrafficDirector.

Installing CWSI

Follow these steps to install CWSI:

  1. Close all applications.

  2. Insert the CWSI CD into your CD-ROM drive.

  3. Launch Windows NT Explorer.

  4. Double-click the CD-ROM drive icon.

  5. Double-click on the setup exe icon.

  6. The Welcome window opens.

  7. Click Next. The Software License Agreement window opens.

  8. Click Yes. The User Information window opens.

  9. Enter your name and company.

  10. Click Next. The Select Installation Option window opens.

  11. Select one of the following options:

    • CastleRock SNMPc

    • HP OpenView Windows

    • HP Network Node Manager

    • StandAlone

  12. Click Next. The Device Installation window opens.

  13. Select one or more devices to be installed.

  14. Click OK. The Select Components window opens.

  15. Select one or both of the following components to be installed:

    • Traffic Director

    • Atm Director

  16. Click Next. The Choose Folder Destination window opens, with a default destination (c:\cwsi21) folder already entered.

  17. Accept the default destination or enter the directory in which you want to install CWSI by clicking Browse.

  18. Click Next. The Choose Database Destination window opens, with a default destination (c:\cwsi21\db\data) folder already entered.

  19. Accept the default destination or enter the directory in which you want to install CWSI by clicking Browse.

  20. Click Next. The Enter Information window opens.

  21. Enter the IP address or name of a seed device.

The seed device is the device from which you start the discovery process. The seed device can be any Cisco device with the Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) enabled (for example, a Catalyst 5000 switch) and a valid read community string.

    Example: c5000-3-lnd

Note If you have an ATM network, you need to select a LightStream 1010 switch as the seed device for the discovery. The LightStream 1010 switch should be located near a Catalyst 5000 on the network. This allows the LAN Emulation (LANE) components to be properly discovered using Interim Local Management Interface (ILMI).

  1. Click Next. The Select Program Folder window opens, with a default destination (CWSI21) folder already entered.

  2. Accept the default program folder, enter a new folder name, or select a folder from the list of existing folders.

  3. Click Next. The Installation Window opens and indicates the percentage of the program that has been successfully installed. When the program installation is complete, the devices you selected are installed.

  4. The Setup Complete window opens. Select one of the following options:

    • Restart computer now

    • No, I will restart my computer later

  5. Click Finish to complete the CWSI installation.

Starting CWSI

Select Start>Programs>CWSI21>Start ANI and wait for the discovery process to complete. Completion of discovery is indicated by the phrase "...because periodic sleep."
