Working with Devices

Working with Devices

Network devices and their interfaces must be defined in COPS QoS Policy Manager (QPM-COPS) before you can assign roles (groups of policies) and policy servers (PDPs) to them. The network devices and the assignment of roles and PDPs to these devices are defined and managed through the QPM Device Configuration.

These topics describe how to manage network devices using QPM-COPS Device Configuration:

Understanding QPM-COPS Device Configuration

The devices managed by QPM-COPS can be routers, layer 3 switches, and switches. These devices must run a software version that supports QoS capabilities and the COPS protocol.

You use QPM-COPS Device Configuration to add and manage devices to the QPM-COPS system. When you add a device, Device Configuration discovers its properties and interfaces.

Device Configuration manages the mapping of PDPs to devices. You can define primary and secondary PDPs for devices. If the connection to a primary PDP is broken, the QPM server will download policies for a device to its secondary PDP, so that the QoS configuration process can continue.

Device Configuration is responsible for setting up and maintaining the mapping between the roles defined in the Policy Editor, and the devices that implement the policies in those roles. You can assign one or more roles to an interface, and they will be checked according to their priority set in the Policy Editor.

Device Configuration maintains a device database, which contains the details for each defined device, including their assigned PDPs, and assigned roles for each interface.

Device configuration is a two-stage process. When you add a device, the device is assigned a Waiting for Confirmation status. After you confirm the addition, the device is assigned Active status. When you edit the PDP or role assignments on a device, the information is first saved to the database, and the device is assigned a Pending status. When you commit the changes, the device is assigned Active status if the changes are successfully deployed on the device, or Error if the commit operation fails.

Adding Devices

You can add devices one-by-one to the Device Configuration database, or you can import a list of devices, and add several devices from the list simultaneously.

When you add devices to the Device Configuration, the system retrieves from those devices, information about their properties and interfaces and assigns the devices a Waiting for Confirmation status. After you confirm the added devices, the status changes to Active.

Note You can detect new devices through the Distribution Manager, and then add those devices in the Device Configuration. See Detecting Devices.

Adding a Single Device

You can add a single device to the Device Configuration database by specifying either the device's DNS name or its IP address. When you enter the DNS, the system finds the IP name, and both will be displayed in the Device Configuration interface.

Before You Begin

For each device you want to add:

Procedure

Step 1 Choose Device Configuration in the QPM-COPS menu bar.

The Device List page is displayed with the option bar for the Device Configuration menu.

Step 2 In the option bar, click Add Devices.

The Add/Import Devices page is displayed.

Step 3 Check that the defined community strings are correct for the devices you want to add.

Note QPM-COPS cannot discover the devices if the community string settings are not correct.

Step 4 In the Device Name or IP field, enter the IP address of a device.

Figure 6-1: Add/Import Devices Page

Step 5 Click OK.

Device Configuration discovers the device's QoS properties and interfaces. When successful discovery is completed, the Confirm Added Devices page displays the device with its DNS name and other details. Its status changes to Waiting for Confirmation (W), and COPS-capable devices are pre-selected.

Note If the device cannot be reached, its status is N.

Step 6 Confirm the new device.

The Device List page appears displaying the new device name and information. The status of the new device has changed from W to A (active).

Tips When adding more than one device, you can select several devices and confirm them simultaneously to save time.

Importing Devices

You can add several devices at a time to the Device Configuration database by importing them from a file. The file can be:

Before You Begin

Export a device inventory using CiscoWorks2000 RME, or create a text file with the device IP addresses. Each device should be on a separate line, or separated by commas.

Procedure

Step 1 Choose Device Configuration in the QPM-COPS menu bar.

The Device List page is displayed with the option bar for the Device Configuration menu.

Step 2 In the option bar, click Add Devices.

The Add/Import Devices page is displayed.

Step 3 In the Import field, specify the name of the import file.

Figure 6-2: Add/Import Devices Page (Import Field)

You can either enter the name directly in the File field, or you can click the Browse button and choose the file name.

Step 4 Click OK.

Device Configuration discovers the devices' QoS properties and interfaces. When successful discovery is completed, the Confirm Added Devices page displays the devices in the list with their DNS name and other details. The status of each device is Waiting for Confirmation (W) and COPS-capable devices are pre-selected.

Note The status of devices that cannot be reached is N.

Step 5 Confirm the new devices.

The Device List page appears displaying the new device names and information. The status of the new devices has changed from W to A (Active).

Tips If you do not want to add all devices in the list, confirm only those you want to add, and delete the devices you do not want to add. See Deleting Devices.

Step 4 Click OK. The Device List page is refreshed with the updated list of devices.

Managing PDP Assignments

You can assign PDPs to devices that support COPS-PR. If a PDP assignment has been made from the device itself, you can change that assignment after you add the device to the Device Configuration database. If a device has more than one assigned PDP, the first PDP in the list will be used by default. If the connection to a PDP fails, the next PDP in the list will be used.

Each device supports two client types, reflecting the two types of policies than can be implemented---RSVP clients and Provisioning clients. You can assign a PDP to a device as an RSVP client, or as a Provisioning client, or as both.

The PDP assignment process is a 2-stage process:

This two-stage process allows you to make various configuration changes and then commit all changes together. It also allows pre-deployment validation. This validation process looks at the pending information rather than at the currently deployed status.

Note PDP assignments for devices that do not support COPS-PR should be configured via Telnet. See "Device Configuration via Telnet" for details.

Assigning PDPs to a Single Device

You can assign PDPs to a single device.

Procedure

Step 1 Choose Device Configuration in the QPM-COPS menu bar.

The Device List page is displayed.

Step 2 To assign a PDP to a single device, click the IP address of the device.

The Device Details page opens for the selected device, displaying a field for assigning Provisioning PDPs, and a field for assigning RSVP PDPs.

Step 3 In the appropriate field, choose a PDP in the drop-down list, and click >>. The PDP is added to the list of assigned PDPs below any existing PDPs.

The PDP at the top of the list is the first PDP to which the device tries to connect. If connection fails, the device connects to the next PDP in the list. To change the order of PDPs, see Reordering PDP Assignments.

The new PDP assignment is saved in the Device Configuration database, and the PDP appears in the Device List page in a yellow color. The device is assigned a Pending status (P).

Step 4 Commit new PDP assignments (and any other changes) to the corresponding devices.

All changes are committed to the selected devices and the status of the devices changes to Active (A).

Step 4 Commit the PDP assignment change (and all other changes) to the device.

All changes are committed to the device and the status of the device changes to Active (A).

Deleting PDP Assignments

You can delete the PDP assignments for a device.

Procedure

Step 1 In the Device Details page, in the appropriate PDP assignment list, click the PDP you want to delete.

Step 2 Click the Delete icon next to the list of assigned PDPs. The changes are saved in the Device Configuration database, and the device is assigned a Pending status (P) in the Device List page.

Step 3 Commit the change to the device.

All changes are committed to the device, and the status of the device changes to Active (A).

Assigning Roles to Device Interfaces

You can assign one or more roles to a device interface. The role information for an interface is held in lexicographic order on the device, and is displayed in QPM-COPS in this order. However, the roles are checked in the order of priority defined in the Policy Editor (high priority is 1). The PDP is responsible for mapping the roles in order of priority.

Before you assign roles to interfaces, you should be aware of the following:

The following topics describe setting roles on interfaces:

Assigning and Removing a Role on a Single Interface

You can add and remove roles to the role combination on a single interface.
