Installing the IPM Client on Windows

Installing the IPM Client on Windows

IPM supports running the IPM client software on a Windows system--- Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT. However, the IPM server is currently only available on Solaris. So, you can run the IPM client on a Windows workstation and connect to an IPM server running on a Solaris workstation.

The IPM client software can be installed from the CD-ROM or it can be downloaded from the IPM server's web server. This chapter provides the following information about installing the IPM client software on Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT:

Quick Start for Windows

This section provides basic information for quickly installing IPM on a Windows workstation. If you need more details about any of the installation steps provided here, see the detailed instructions in the sections that follow.

To install the IPM client software on a Windows workstation:

Step 1 Make sure that your workstation meets the requirements listed in the
"Hardware and Software Requirements" section.

Step 2 Insert the IPM CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive on the workstation. The Install Shield setup window is displayed.

Step 3 When the Select IPM Server Configuration dialog box (Figure 5-1) is displayed, confirm that the default port 44342 is being using by the IPM server or change the port number for the IPM client to match the server if a different port number was selected when the IPM server was installed.

Step 6 Click Next to confirm the installation settings.

Step 7 Click Finish to exit the installation program after setup is complete.

Hardware and Software Requirements

This section describes the hardware and software requirements to run the IPM client on a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT workstation. It includes the following sections:

Note Hardware and software version information is subject to change, based on enhancements to the product. For the most current version information, refer to the Release Notes for Cisco Internetwork Performance Monitor available on CCO.

Hardware Requirements

Your system must meet the following hardware requirements to run the IPM client:

Software Requirements

Your system must meet the following software requirements to run the IPM client:

Note For IPM Release 2.1 to support Year 2000 requirements, be sure that your Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT system has the required Year 2000 patches installed. For more information about the required Year 2000 patches, see the Microsoft web site.

Before you install the IPM client on a Windows workstation, you should know the following information:

Tips If the IPM server port was set to a port other than the default during installation, you can determine the IPM server port number by obtained using the pkgparam -v CSCOcwbS | grep OSAGENT_PORT command on the Solaris system.

Installing the IPM Client on Windows from the CD-ROM

To install the IPM client from the CD-ROM:

Step 1 Insert the IPM CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive on the workstation. The Install Shield setup window appears.

Note If the setup window does not automatically appear when you insert the CD-ROM, go to the root directory and run the ipmsetup.exe command. If you are having trouble reading the CD-ROM, be sure that your CD-ROM drive is compliant with the ISO 9660 standard.

Step 2 Follow the setup program messages and respond according to your site's requirements.

Step 3 When the Select IPM Server Configuration Dialog box (Figure 5-1) is displayed, do the following:

The IPM client and server can only communicate if they are configured for the same port number. The default port number is 44342. If the system administrator who installed the IPM server did not accept the default port number, then you need to modify this field to match the value used in the IPM server installation.

Step 4 Review the settings displayed at the end of the installation option windows. If the current settings are acceptable, click Next to run the installation.

Step 5 When the Setup Complete window is displayed, click Finish.

Installing the IPM Client on Windows from the Web Server

You can use the IPM web server to access the client installation software if you do not have access to the CD-ROM or if you prefer to download the IPM client software from the IPM server to run the installation.

To install the IPM client on a Windows workstation from the IPM web server:

Step 1 From your browser, go to the URL for the IPM web server (for example,
http://youripmserver:1744). The Web Server Home Page for the IPM Client Software is displayed (Figure 5-2).
